11l what was expected to be a close and exciting game lehigh ran up a score of 34-6 against the uni versity of virginia at the american league ball park in washington on saturday although on neutral grounds there were but few of the 2500 spectators not wearing vir ginia colors which made it seem very much like a home game for virginia a number of rooters had come up from charlottesville full of confidence in their team and hoping it would be able to hold on to its victorious record but they were doomed to disappointment as le high waded in and cut em down with very little trouble and ham mer away at virginia's defense un til there was but little left of it from the very start when andy caught the kick off and went up the field for twenty-five yards the game looked easy for lehigh it took the team eight minutes to make the first touchdown and sixteen for the second and after that they were so in the habit of making gains that it was hard to stop in the last few minutes of play dr newton replaced over half the team with subs and with this ad vantage together with the darkness virginia succeeded in making a touchdown after being given the ball on our twenty-five yard line for holding after this the game was called on account of darkness there being but 15 seconds to play a farabaugh and waters de serve the most credit for the game andy making long runs while waters astonished the crowd by hurdling the line time and again for long gains torrey also distin guished himsell by catching a pant on the twenty-five yard line and running through the entire virginia team for the first touchdown but the star performance of the afternoon was the goal from place ment kicked from the 35-yd line by a farabaugh nj one thought he would suc.eed but andy was once more equal to the occasion and sent the ball true as a die over the bar virginia opened the contest by kicking off to a farabaugh who came back 25 yards as if there was no opposit-.on at ah the ball was forced back into virginia's territory and the march continued un.il it lay on the southerners 5-yd line here the ball was lost by holding harris for virginia punted high and short torrey catching the ball on the 25 yd line carrying it back for a touchdown a farabaugh just missed a difficult goal virginia kicked off to waters who put the ball down again in the center of the field the ball was virginia's on a fumble and on a fake kick they made 30 yards around left end here they were held for downs and after a 35-yd run of farabaugh's and a 12-yd plunge of butler's lehigh was held for downs but soon recovered on a fumble and andy carried the pig skin to within a yard of the goal line from where waters was pushed over andy kicked goal the next kick-off was a repeti tion of its predecessor — virginia to waters on the 15-yd line and back up the field in 5 and 8-yd gains un til another touchdown was added to the list andy made the touch down and kicked goal time was called shortly after score lehigh 17 virginia o lehigh kicked off to pritchard who was downed on his 20-yd line virginia was held for downs le high failed to make its distance and a farabaugh dropped back to the 35-yd line for a place kick it was a grand success and scored 5 more for lehigh virginia kicked off to andy and the ball was worked up the field and butler sent over for an other touchdown andy kicked goal virginia again kicked off to an dy who ran back 50 yds and soon butler was sent over for another touchdown and dornin kicked goal virginia kicked off to macfar lane who came back 20 yds here virginia held for downs and soon by an end run and several line plunges had sent johnson over for its only touchdown harris kicked goal time was then called score lehigh 34 virginia 6 the line-up lehigh will not be made for about ten days but in the meantime it would be of great advantage for those who intend trying for either of the forwards or for centre to take preliminary practice in the gymna sium on tuesdays from 4 to 6 p m and wednesdays from 1 to 3 p m the floor will be free for basket ball during these hours no hard work should be undertaken un til the regular practice begins but the time should be devored to goal throwing and to swift accurate pass ing an effort will be made this year to develop an unusually fast passing game the freshmen are especially urged to take advantage of this opportunity for preliminary practice for upon them we are rely ing for fast men everybody will be given a show captain at present the regular hours for gymnasium team practice are as fol lows wednesday 3 p m to 5 p m friday 4 p m to 6 p m robert jarecki ex-'o2 was in town last week becker 03 has left college to accept a position in steelton the following important action by the athletic committee in refer ence to the sale of season tickets and the financial support of the various teams has been taken at the regular meeting of the athletic committee on nov 6 it was decided that the 1902-1903 sea son tickets of the l u a a should be good for admission to all basket ball games in the gymnasium in order that this ruling may have an oppor tunity to increase the sale of tickets and also to place basket ball on a more secure financial basis the sale of tickets will be continued until dec i up to the present time 371 tickets have been sold and it was resolved that if 390 tickets are sold the ath letic committee will . support all teams except lacrosse if 425 are sold by that date all teams will be supported it being understood that those students who pay 3.00 ath letic dues shall be counted in with those buying tickets in making up the total number the committee also awarded class numerals to the following men who participated in the founder's day sports sophomore foot
