the board has little means of knowing what work is being done in this line but so far as the members are aware there will be space for much more than is likely to be received there fore all who have any literary ability at all but who so far have done nothing are earnestly urged to get busy and give to the epitome some effusions of their genius and those who have hearkened unto the frequent appeals of the board and intend to give some of their spare time and inspiration are asked not to forget their good intentions contributions can be given to any member of the board left in the gag box and his sudden death in the prime of manhood came as a shock to all those connected with lehigh for in mr linderman the university loses a valuable friend and sup porter , robert packer linderman was the grandson of judge asa packer the founder of lehigh university he was born in 1863 after gradu ating at the mt pleasant military academy he entered lehigh in 1880 graduating four years later with the degree of ph b for high scholarship during his course he was elected to the honorary so ciety phi beta kappa he was also a member of the sigma phi fraternity since his graduation he was prominently connected with the lehigh valley national bank and the bethlehem steel company mr linderman always took an active interest in his alma mater he ably filled for two terms the of fice of president of the alumni as sociation and at the time of his death and for many years past was 1 a member of the board of trustees and of the executive com mittee and the committee on col lege administration he has aided the university both by valuable ad vice in its management and substan tial contributions to its support the faculty alumni and undergrad uates of lehigh sincerely mourn the death of one who has rendered such useful service to the college and whose loss will be severly felt announcement by dr drown it is my sad duty to announce to the students of lehigh university the death of robert packer lind erman—alumnus of the university member of its board of trustees and a grandson of its founder asa packer mr linderman's career as a man of affairs in the financial and in dustrial world was a brilliant one very few at his age have occupied the important positions of honor continued on second page a most successful meeting held the most successful meeting ever held by the new york lehigh club was held on friday evening jan 16 at the university club new york president drown prof ringer prof franklin prof lambert and prof stewardson were present and among others from the bethlehems were r p linderman and warren a wilbur about 125 members of the club including many of the older members were present and showed that the club is again es tablished on a firm foundation the topic for discussion was do modern educational methods meet the demands of the times ? if not how can they be remedied john b clark professor of po litical economy at columbia uni versity was the first speaker and presented his views on industrial problems and modern education alexander c humphreys presi dent of stevens institute discussed theory and practice in technical education he said in part : the walking delegate often does not represent but misrepresents the workingman such conditions must not be established here if we are to hold our industrial supremacy lawlessness and crime followed the recent strike in the pennsylvania coal mines it seems to me that our technical schools may be the connecting link between capital and labor many a question of strike or no strike rests with the manager and his staff dr drown spoke on industrial ity in technical education dr henry m leipzige'r supervisor of lectures bureau of education of new york city spoke on the education of the
