sophomores defeat nativity the sophomore basket ball team added another victory to their list on thursday evening when they de feated the nativity a a team by the score of 24 to 11 the game was played fast from start to finish and although their opponents were no match for them the sophomore team gave a fine exhibition of pass ing the ball and shot goals accu rately nativity was the first to score as they secured one point on a foul soon after the game began estes threw the first field goal and at the same time minsch a nativity player was compelled to leave the game on account of a slightly strained ankle during the first half goals were thrown in the following order : es tes mcmullen throp chase mil ler earich mcmullen throp throp and at the close of the first half the score stood sophomore 14 nativity 5 the result of the second half in scoring was about the same as the first until the last few minutes of play no score had been made by na tivity but then earich threw three goals in rapid succession five goals had been thrown during the half by the sophomore team so that the final score was sophomores 24 ; na tivity 11 the line-up follows : nativity a a position lehigh brillhart the future of the west indies a fi clauder the corpora tions and public welfare first rehearsals held on last wednesday the first rehearsal of the mus tard and cheese dramatic assoccia tion was held in the y m c rooms in christmas hall on wednesday afternoon preliminary trials had been held before the examinations and from the large list of embryonic thespians thus presented some twenty were picked to try for the cast the greater part of the work on wednesday consisted in break ing the new men into the rudimen tary methods of egg-dodging and side-stepping to avoid vegetables and in the quick methods of over coming stage-fright,although some idea was obtained as to the adapta bility of the different men for the parts in the play the play decided upon is a di vergence from the customary farce and this year a straight play will be tried it is one which embraces the intense southern feeling soon after the civil war and is full of love and passion without bordering upon the melodramatic in the least the association is particularly well equipped this season as almost the entire cast oi last year's produc tion is available for the performance this spring besides a large num ber of new men who have already shown extraordinary talent in this line among the new men are gaw throp ( zahniser meyer taussig kite corsa paul benkhart,baily de schweinitz and langstroth in this list are several who give great promise of filling the ever felt want for good-looking and good-acting girls mr b luther anthony who has so successfully coached the casts for the past two seasons has been re engaged as coach for the coming production the preliminary cast is as fol lows : col preston gawthrop hutchinson col neoberly graham shive squire tucker . johnson zahniser capt davenport meyer all those who heard mr robt e laramy 96 in his talk before the young men's christian associa tion last year will be glad to know that he will again address the as sociation next sunday evening a large number should be present to hear what will undoubtedly be a helpful talk mr a v l guise who has just entered the university to take the mining course desires to make it known that he is ready to do coach ing or tutoring in either french or german to help meet his expenses while at the university mr guise is especially equipped to assist any one in this line having spent time in both france and germany in the study of these languages his scholarship in these branches is fully endorsed by professor ringer ad dress 628 cherokee st bible study will be the subject for consideration at the meeting of the young men's christian asso ciation sunday evening dr stewardson will conclude his lectures on the old testament in the next two or three sundays much help can be gotten from these lectures even by those who have not been able to attend the previous ones the class meets in the as sociation reading room from 4.15 to 5.00 o'clock course of lectures eminent engineers to speak on important subjects the department of physics and electrical engineering of lehigh university announces that two lec tures will be given in the physics lecture room at the physical lab oratory on thursday and friday of this week by two prominent new york engineers the first lecture on thursday february 12th at 4 p m will be by mr w c gotshall president and chief engineer of the new york and port chester r r co his subject is railroad engineer ing the second lecture on friday february 13th at 4 p m at the same place will be by mr c o mailloux consulting electrical engineer subject interior elec trical wiring all those interested in the sub jects of these lectures are cordially invited to be present mr godshall is prominent in elec trical circles having been in 1895 and 1896 chief engineer and general manager of the union depot rail road in st louis and previous to that time chief engineer of the st charles street railway of new orleans while in st louis he in stalled an extensive three-wire sys tem for distributing electric power throughout the union depot in 1897 he came to new york at the request of f s pearson chief engineer of the metropolitan rail way co and had complete charge of the equipment of the second avenue line when it was changed over into an underground electric conduit system in 1889 he went to europe to organize the british and french corporations of the electric vehicle co and then to paris as a railway conduit expert in con nection with the installation of con duit electric railways in paris mr mailloux a vice president of the american institute oi elec trical engineers is one of the lead ing consulting electrical engineers in new york city he is associated with mr gotshall in the new york and port chester high speed elec tric railway enterprise as techni cal adviser a number of the largest electrical installations in and about new york have been engi neered by mr mailloux including those of the waldorf-astoria hotel macy's new department store the park row office building and nu merous large central electrical sta tions the above lectures are the first in a course of technical lectures to be delivered during the present term to lehigh students mr gotshall is to give a series of three on rail road engineering and mr mail loux a course of five or six on in terior wiring and electric railroad engineering these two series of lectures will to a certain extent supplement one another
