the second of the series of debates between the forum literary society of lehigh university and the comen ian literary society of the moravian theological seminary was held last evening in the memorial chapel of the moravian college dr augustus schultze president of the seminary presided the question for debate was re solved that public interest would be best protected by federal ownership and control of railroads the affirma tive side was upheld by h e jordan and n a wolcott of the forum while w j gapp and c h wenhold jr of the comeniah defended the nega tive all the speakers spoke fluently and with force and showed a surprising knowledge of the subject the affirm ative dwelt on the existing evils of the railroad system of the united states and proposed as a remedy for the present difficulties government owner ship and control the negative on the other hand pointed out the impracticability of such a scheme and argued for the creation of a rail road board with power to enforce ex isting laws and suggest remedical leg islation of congress as the need of re strictive laws for the prevention of new difficulties presented itself in the future the judges rev b f sanderson hugh morrison and c t o'neil awarded the honors to the negative side with the winning of this debate the comenian society receives the banner which was to be awarded to the col lege which obtained two of the pos sible three victories on this banner will be inscribed the names of the two victorious de bating teams those who will be thus honored are r l williams e j heath w j gapp and c h wen hold jr while the judges were delib erating on their verdict the audience was entertained by several well ren dered selections by the moravian col lege quartet basket ball the following hours will be used for practice for the rest of the sea son : tuesday 4 to 6 wednesday 2 to 3.30 friday 4 to 6 unless the varsity and a good scrub squad appear regularly at those hours the washington trip h h stock r b honeyman howard eckfeldt p a lambert lecture by mr gotshall on thursday w c gotshall of new york lectured this afternoon in the physical laba ratory on electric railway engineer ing a large audience was present and listened to a very practical talk by one who has had great experience in this field the lecture was a continuation of one delivered last week by the same speak er and dealt mainly with the location of the railway line at the beginning of the lecture the main controlling considerations in lo cating a railway w°re stated to be 1 safety to public and employes 2 relability of operation 3 convenience for the public 4 minimum cost of op eration and maintenance a road over private property most nearly fulfills the first requirement elevated and underground roads have the same advantage single track roads should be avoided and if the busi ness does not warrant a double track it is doubtful if it is worth going after single track roads are the cause of most railroad accidents one accident some time ago cost a railroad company 170,000 and it is now in the hands of a receiver one problem that arises is how much to turn the course of the road aside for centers of population which never lie in a straight line the commercially ideal road is one which has a maxi mum of paying population per mile of railroad in considering the paying the working people must be considered rather than those who have carriages of their own on his preliminary investigation or reconnaissance the engineer has noted the occupations character and habits of the people of the different population centres he has also noted the exist ing community of interest between the respective cities towns villages etc as well as the relations and approxi mate travel between each of the centre of populations and the terminus or ter mini he has ascertained the time in tervals of as well as the amount of heaviest traffic the rolling stock is usually determined by the business ac cruing during a few hours of the morn ing and a few hours of the evening many methods have been employed for finding before the road is built the probable business that it will have to do it has been proven that electric roads induce the riding habit and that where they take the place of steam roads that the passenger business is very greatly increased there is also a marked increase in the freight busi ness on account of the more rapid trans fer of freight by electric roads mer chants are able to obtain their stock directly from the producer and in this continued on second page first meeting held wednesday afternoon as the result of captain lattig's first call for lacrosse candidates a list of forty-one names was se cured at the gym wednesday after noon nearly all of last year's squad is included in the list the only one missing who was on the varsity being hegeman the freshmen however did not turn out well ; there must be more than two men in 1906 who will make good lacrosse men manager cassedy reports that the sticks lor the men will be here by the end of this week and practice on the track will begin the first of next week the only work that will be done for the present will be tipping and the development of wind will be attended to later the squad will go into light training march ist and strict train ing will begin the efirst of april in regard to a coach the matter has not been definitely settled yet but there will be a canadian coach here by april ist the outlook for a successful season is very promising with such a large squad to start with and most of them men who have had two or at least one year's exper ience it will not be necessary for the men to spend so much of their time in learning the rudiments of the game however it is necessary that more new men should turn out in order to train them for next year and also to give the captain plenty of material with which to work the outlook for a usccessful team open to new men who show their ability and willingness to do the work ; and it is hoped that more of them will come out later or hand their names in immediately to the captain or manager the following is the list of names secured on
