new york university 1 it was an ideal day for base ball and the dia mond on lehigh field was in the very best condition a large crowd witnessed a game in which the le high players clearly showed that they will make the present season a suc cess probably the most gratifying feature of the game was the pitch ing o>f badgley who struck out eleven men and had excellent con trol in the first inning he struck out the first three batters and again in the sixth inning with two men on base he struck out the next three and retired the side on ac count of the condition of the dia mond no infield practice has been possible for some time the er rors by the infield were therefore largely excusable the visitors were struck out in one two three order in the first inning all of lehigh's players hit the ball but failed to reach first with the exception of eisen hart who made a long hit down the track past third base no one reached third base in the second in ning and the first score was made in the third badgley secured first on an cnui by the infield and scored on a long two-base hit to right field by powell new york narrowly missed making a run in the fourth inning on a base on balls to dallard and a hit by connelly the former was put out at the plate in the second half of the fourth snyder was given a base on balls stole second was advanced to third by jones sacrifice and scored on a hit by davison the run in the fifth inning was by shuler who made first on an error of the in field and went the rest of the way on a wild throw over the first baseman's head jones made a safe hit in the sixth inning and reached home on wild throws no score was made in the seventh but in the eighth two resulted from a two-base hit by davison on which snyder and jones scored / a new york player did not get past first in the fifth sixth farewell talk dr stewardson has very kindly consented to give an informal fare well talk to as many university men as care to assemble at christ inas hall next sunday evening at seven o'clock mr j m monie will favor the meeting by singing it is hoped that a great many will make this an opportunity to show their appreciation of dr steward son while he speaks under the auspices of the young men's chris tian association the meeting is in no sense for association men alone but for everybody note the change in time sophomore composi tion prizes the sophomore composition prizes for the ist terra were awarded to first division r c kautz ist prize f a henry 2nd prize second division e l rich ist prize p r thomas 2nd prize continued on second page vol x the brown and white no 46 lehigh university fraternity initiates south bethlehem pa friday april 3 1903 gym exhibition lehigh victorious calendar saturday april 4 — at 3.30 p m base ball game lehigh field ursinus college vs lehigh at 8.15 p m sophomore ban quet wyandotte hotel at 8 p m freshman gym nasium exhibition gymnasium sunday april 5 — at 9.15 a m bible classes christmas hall at 10.30 a m dr steward son farewell sermon packer memorial church at 7 p m y m c a meet ing christmas flail monday april 6 at 4p m base ball practice lehigh field tuesday april 7 at 4p m base ball practice lehigh field wednesday april b at 12 m easter vacation begins thursday april 16 — at 7.45 a m easter vacation ends interesting program arranged the annual exhibition will take place on saturday evening at eight o'clock instead of friday as was originally announced the pro gramme includes several novel fea tures in the way of combination work on the mats and parallel bars pyramids and ariel work on the double horizontal bars which will doubtless add a distinctively new phase to what has usually been seen in the gymnasium within the past week a man who has but lately entered college was found to be a wonder on the double horizontal bars many of the most difficult of tricks from bar to bar a back somersault in the air from one to the other a jump from one to a handstand on the second he accomplishes without the least hesitation and finishes with the ease and grace of the pro fessional the programme will begin with a callisthume drill by the freshman class a type order of exercises will then be executed on the hori zontal bar by the leaders of the class
