the raffle for mr schneider's posters resulted in gallardo getting the first choice for seniors and buell capturing the poster open to junior competition after the meeting a collation of sandwiches and coffee was served many of the members ling ered after this to play chess and cards the next meeting will be an nounced later by poster a meeting of the mechanical engineering society was held in packer hall on tuesday evening with about forty members and a few visitors present as this was the first meeting of the society since the juniors were elected professor klein spoke briefly con cerning the organization and its aims both in past years ' and at present he remarked that per haps everyone did not know that the meetings were open to anyone in fact a cordial invitation is given to all men who are in any way in terested in engineering to be pres ent as the papers will cover a wide range and will touch upon all branches of engineering mr trowbridge then presented a very interesting paper on the present dearth of good engineers in our navy owing to its rapidly increasing size and suggested sev eral ways fri which this state of affairs might be remedied he showed that the high efficiency of our war vessels in the spanish war was due to the careful over-sight of the engines by men who were especially . trained for that work and now that the places these men held are largely filled by warrant ma chinists it is too much to expect that this same high degree of effi ciency can be kept up a paper was read by sachs 02 on " superheated steam " explain ing the prominent position it has taken in the last few years and showing the difficulties to be over come before it can be economical ly put into general use this paper was thoroughly discussed by the members after which the meeting adjourned for rent rooms the right kind near the campus furnished in a suitable manner if interested call at 453 chestnut st forum meeting a full attendance is wanted at the meeting of the forum to be held on thursday nov 21 at 7.15 p.m gift to history dept economic society the following topics will be dis cussed at the meetings of the society at 7.15 p.m in saucon hall on the following dates dec 3 — state socialism dec 17 — christian socialism jan 7 the point of view of anarchism jan 27 — russian nihilism lost four one dollar bills in the gymnasium finder will please return to the supply bureau e a andrews mr a b fichter has presented to the library of the department of history and economics the great work of yon hoist's on the con stitutional history of the united states 1 750 j 861 this work which is in eight volumes is the greatest treatise on our history and supplies a great need in the univer sity equipment don't forget the lehigh — la fayette game on the athletic field on saturday afternoon office hours the following are the office hours of the secretary of the y m c a 8.00 to 8.15 a.m 8.30 to 12.00 a.m 1 00 to 2.00 p.m 9.30 to 10.30 and 10.30 to 12 on tuesdays 8.30 to 9.30 and 10.30 to 11.30 on wednesdays much interest is being mani fested by the whole college at the approaching annual performance of the minstrel show which is to be given here on the night of decem ber 14 practice for the chorus solo work and several quartets is pro gressing nicely and things look very bright for an extremely good performance — l in fact the manage ment promises one of the best yet given here which is saying a great deal an original and decidedly unique second part is being arranged which will set forth the talents of several of the men who have good stunts to perform the stage will represent the outside of a " midway ", where the " spielers " bring out their specialties and give the pleasure seeking crowd a grand free exhibition some great things in this line are being worked up and will be the hit of the evening and in fact buffalo's midway will be decidedly second rate in com parison but in spite of the bright pros pects and in spite of the good quality of material at hand more men are wanted and are wanted badly men for every class of work in the show are still needed and should come out and support this organization as the proceeds go to the athletic committee and thus each man in the show is working for the support of his college ath letics continned on third page among the men selected for the georgetown trip thanksgiving are morgan violin ;
