; " at 4 p.m basket ball practice in the gym saturday dec 21 — at 12.30 p.m christmas holidays begin thursday jan 2 at 8.15 a.m christmas holidays end the eagle hotel was the scene of the first dance of the 1904 soph omore cotillion club on friday night december 13 the dance was very well attended there being about one hundred thirty five per sons present composed of ' the members and friends the services of grdman's orchestra had been secured and everything tended to make the occasion a grand success there were twenty-four dances waltzes and two-steps alternating and four extras the hall was tastefully decorated with palms and brown and white banners and ribbons ■■-„ ; first vice-president francis p sinn second vice-president samuel h hodges secretary howard c bayl c s ; treasurer donald j packer executive committee : robert e wilbur n ramsay pennypacker frank v mcdevitt wm u mussina thomas g fisher ralph g johnson college meeting after the lecture on last friday morning a college meeting was held w r hall chairman of the athletic committee conducted the meeting he outlined the action taken at the last meeting of the athletic committee in regard to a coach for next years foot ball team and asked the under graduate body what it was willing to do in the way of raising money he said that an alumnus had offered 100.00 if the undergraduates would raises3oo.oo a motion was carried unanimously to assess each man 50 cents a motion was also carried to the effect that dr drown he asked to address the students about the physical culture fee daniels 02 made an announce ment that the glee club would be reorganized he is in receipt of a communication from the university of pennsylvania they desire to have the lehigh glee club come down to philadelphia for a concert and then return the favor at beth lehem mandolin club meeting the mandolin club has been re organized and will hold a meeting at the delta u house on wednes day dec 18 at 7 1 5 p.m several matters of importance will be con sidered among them a joint meet ing of the lehigh mandolin and glee clubs the latter shortly to be organized with the glee and man dolin clubs of the university of pennsylvania at some future date every man who can play is urged to be present despite the heavy rain which flooded the streets on the evening of saturday last society and the student body turned out in force to witness and encourage the efforts of the lehigh university minstrel as sociation some who went merely from a sense of duty stayed to en joy and left the theatre at the con clusion of the last act with the sat isfying reflection of ail evening well spent : every one ; from the happy undergraduate in his tuxedo dis-i playing to the sceptical visiting girl the glories of his alma mater to the student in corduroys and sweats er who came because he hoped to see roasted his especial abhor rence in the faculty seemed to be enjoying himself or herself to the utmost and the waves of laughter and applause which followed some particularly felicitous hit^seemed to startle into mirth even : the frown ing countenances of the ferocious lions painted on the drop curtain the honors of the evening be long in great part to three of the end men reese tracy and john son who perpetrated jokes good bad and middling with a cheerful humor which was almost profes sional and rendered vocal selections the beauty of which was only sur passed by the comical absurdity of the singers bohannon glancy and tunstall who sustained the other end positions were almost equally good and convulsed the audience with their cleverly-told stories the curtain rose at 8.30 display ing the time-honored circle the interlocutor mr miller who was looking even handsomer than usual under the touch of the make up artist introduced in a few words the " end men " and then followed for an enjoyable half hour the se quence of jokes and songs which constitutes the first part of ever well-ordered minstrel show messrs felix geare and wheat ren dered the first three songs on the program with a sweetness and re gard for tune which delighted all music lovers present the celebrated quintette composed of the best of the rag-time artists in college clos ing each selection with a few well chosen " barber-shop minors continued on third page university lecture the third ol the series of univer sity lectures will be given in the physical laboratory on friday jan io at 11.30 a.m it will be delivered by mr frank moss of new york whose subject will be " morality and politics the second university lecture was delivered on friday morning before a large audience of under graduates by dr e d t devine on the subject housing the poor dr devine is the secretary of the charity organization society of new york and so is thoroughly qualified to speak on such a sub ject his facts were treated in a most interesting manner and held the attention of all : dr drown with a few brief re marks introduced the speaker whose address was in part as follows : " the housing problem rests on the belief that physical environ ment has an influence on character and th,at by improving these en vironments the cause of morality is advanced the solving of the problem successfully requires not only the co-operation of legislative authorities but also the earnest ef forts of experts in almost every branch of science " that there is a close relation between health and housing ad mits of no doubt so conclusive is the proof the tenement houses of new york where sunlight never enters and fresh air is unknown where one block often shelters four thousand persons are prolific not only of disease but of crime and abject poverty such surround ings make the saloon triumphant over the home and force the child ren on the streets where vice is rampant these conditions have at length aroused the public and legislation to improve the tenements has been passed a tenement com mission has been appointed who oversee the construction of new buildings and as far as possible remedy the existing evils " the evils resulting from such an unsanitary state of affairs can scarcely be overestimated and should arouse the people to such generous help as followed the gal ve.ston flood the famine in india and other similar disasters in this case however the effort must not be spasmodic but permanent the housing question is the leading problem of the modern city and one admitting an easy so lution easy however under one condition and that is for every porson to give it his thought and attention and to work for its suc cess basket ball the basket ball team will play the pottsville team on wednesday evening at 8 o'clock in the gym ..'■_ ;
