pottsville 16 lehigh 36 basket ball musical clubs organ ize wednesday night the men of the minstrel association met at tne delta u house and organized a glee club and also a mandolin and guitar club mr higgins was unanimously elected manager of the combined organizations and has several trips in view before the close of the season mr paul p reese was chosen leader of the glee club and r w strauss as sistant leader lehigh has felt the loss of these two musical organizations very much this season and now that they are once more revived much interest will be taken in them by the college at large rehearsals will begin immediately after the christmas vacation and the time and place will be announced interest in the madolin club this year is not as great as it should be and while a majority of last year's club were out only one or two freshmen showed up let all musicians of any kind turn out to the first rehearsal option in marine en gineering y m c a those desiring the course in marine engineering must announce their choice of this option not later than january 2nd 1902 that is at the end of the christmas re cess prof klein will gladly meet in his office students wishing to take this course and will answer questions concerning it in prof klein's absence mr a trowbridge may be consulted in this matter the official bulletin board on the first floor of packer hall contains modification of the present regis ter's announcements of work for the junior and senior second terms the basket ball team continued its remarkably good work by add ing the third consecutive victory to its list on wednesday night when the strong team representing the pottsville y m c a went down before it in defeat a miserably small handful of rooters turned out to witness the game but they managed to keep the players in good spirits throughout the most of the first half was rather slow and ended with the score 12 to 7 in pottsville's favor but the second half was fast and furious lehigh went in with a determina tion that finally put them even with the visitors and then sent them far ahead in this half potts ville failed to throw a single field goal their four points being made made on free throws smartt and pfahler carried off the especial honors although every man on the team played an almost faultless game in the first half for pottsville beisel threw three fieldgoals and mcguinis one while for lehigh farabaugh threw one and pfahler threw one field goal and one goal from a free throw making the score pottsville 12 lehigh 7 in the second half farabaugh and clay each threw a goal pfahler threw two and smartt five and pfahler got two more on free throws while for pottsville hoffman got three on free throws and beisel one the game ended with the score lehigh 36 pottsville 16 the line up was as follows : pottsville position lehigh burgen hoffman center clay beisel forward pfahler rochrig forward miller paul guard smartt mcguinis potts guard farabaugh goals from field beisel 3 mcguinis i pfahler 3 smartt 5 farabaugh 2 clay 1 goals from free throw hoffman 2 beisel i pfahler 3 referee pollard umpires burgen klar timekeeper becker before the game two teams from the freshmen class lined up for one half the line-up position hewett center smith estes guard farley mcmiillen guard sipe bush forward wier berg forward thrope goals from field thrope estes berg hewett referee klar editor of the brown and white — the foot ball season just closed has been the most disastrous one in the history of the game at le high that this may not occur again the ath com has passed a resolution that the faculty mem bers confer with the faculty the alumni members with the alumni and the undergraduate members with the undergraduates to obtain suggestions for the betterment of the team next year and further as to the means of raising much needed money for coaches etc that this is necessary will be very apparent when it is observed that the highest the committee ever paid for a coach has been 700 and our next year's coach will cost 1500 the accounts will probably show the foot ball season to have produced a deficit of 600 it is therefore evident that it is necessary to raise 1400 in some way can we do this ? if not can we ex pect anything better next year without going into any analysis of the past season's work at le high it may not be amiss to note some facts regarding the changes continued on third page that have taken place in late years in foot ball at smaller colleges le high's teams are perfectly pure from taint of any description this is as it should be and must be but when you leave the few larger colleges it is almost impossible to find similar conditions any where we therefore meet on the field col lege after college where nine-tenths of the men on the team are pro cured by discreditable methods this is not meart as an apology for last season's failure but to em phasize the following fact lehigh ranks with the best colleges in the country in her college work why should we not have our proportion of the athletes with classes larger than ever entered ? is it not pos sible to add to the number of our athletes without any recourse to discreditable methods ? this let ter is to call for suggestions in the next issue of the brown and white we hope to see letters from old lehigh men while we admit there may have been some errors in policy yet the committee has duly considered the many prob lems that have arisen and has at rev a dow butterick the drummer evangelist from phila delphia addressed the y m c a meeting last sunday evening on the subject what constitutes suc cess in life his talk was very helpful to all who were in attend ance mr butterick also sang a song suggested by the message at one time of our late president to his mother mother i'll be there forty odd members of the eco nomic society attended the meet ing of the society on tuesday night and listened to an interesting lecture on " christian socialism " by professor stewart the address in substance follows : '■' one of the most significant signs of the day is the fact that the great body of the working classes has fallen away from the church and its influence this class composes nearly seven tenths of our national population of which the larger part is located in cities of ten thousand souls and upward here are afforded the best opportunities for church in fluence and yet it has come to be recognized that the working class if not actually hostile to the church is at the best but lukewarm the conclusion is obvious the christian religion it is argued has all but failed to reach the very class which it was intended to reach an observation of the church going class of the protestant branch will reveal the fact that this is a prosperous class of people who from their dress and manner may be judged to belong to the best society for which wealth and refinements are the requirements on the other hand an observation of the catholic branch will reveal not only a very large per cent of the work class but also a much larger proportion of men to the women this w r ould seem to show that of the two the catholic church has succeeded in getting much the nearer to the heart of the plain people this is undoubtedly due to the fact that the working man believes the catholic church takes a greater interest in his welfare he has been led by observation to believe that the protestant church is a social club for the wealthy its members having nothing in com mon with the working class and hence no sympathy for it continued on second page recognizing these facts the founders of the present christian socialism sought to bring with renewed force the christian doc trine before the working class and to re-enlist its sympathy their method was to attempt to make christian principles practical in every day life vol ix no 23 the brown and white a hi xj 3mc xt i ktu 3ve b e r „ lehigh university south bethlehem pa saturday december 21 1901 economic society communications received from alumni and others socialism lecture on christian calendar saturday dec 21 — at 12.30 p.m christmas holidays begin thursday jan 2 — at 2.00 p.m christmas holidays end
