glee club rehearsal this week will be held on wednesday at 7.00 o'clock at sigma chi house re hearsals will also be held on thurs day night and sunday afternoon place to be announced later y m c a elections the following officers were elected by the y m c a at a meet ing held saturday night : president lord vice president carrier sec retary edmunds treasurer rog ers well attended meet ing held last thursday evening the civil engineering society met in the forum room at saucon hall and in spite of the deep snow on the ground the smoker was a decided success in the absence of the president the chair was occupied by mr schneider owing to a misunder standing the nomination of officer which was to have been held at this meeting was postponed until the last meeting of the term ; this will be held before the first annual banquet of the society which is announced for may the papers read on thursday evening were unusually interesting and the members present showed much appreciation the first paper read by gallards 02 was a contin uation of his paper of the last meet ing on the subject of the drain age of the city of mexico he gave an account of the work done in later years in supplying the city of mexico with water and also showed the great improvements that have been made over the old meth ods walter 03 read the second paper his subject was forest cut ting and floods the reader showed that the cutting away of trees on the mountain sides cannot help but hasten the melting of snow thus swelling the streams and causing floods in the valleys where other wise the snow would slowly melt under the trees and soak into the ground the third paper was mr spinosa's on porto rican roads he showed that the spaniards built bet ter roads in porto rico than have the americans since their occupa tion of the island in 1899 and that porto rica is unexcelled in the mat ter of road-making by any section of the united states to-day the posters were next raffled off the lucky men being eichner sancedo and yost refreshments and souvenir pipes finished up a very enjoyable evening syracuse university will intro duce an entirely new system of ath letics in the near future plans are being laid for director of athletics who will have all out-door athletics under his charge ten thousand dollars will be furnished annually of which the students will be ex pected to furnish 6,000 northwestern has abandoned the women's medical school the reason given by the trustees is that they do not consider women fitted for the work recent railroad combinations was the subject of a very instructive lecture by mr henry j newcomb delivered in the physical labora tory on last friday the lecture was unusually well attended the large lecture room being filled to the doors president drown introduced the speaker in a few words the following is a resume of the address : transportation has taken a more and more prominent position dur ing the last few years railroad combinations are not new but the scale of recent combinations has never before been approached to the economist it seems pretty clear from the course of events that the continent will soon be parcelled off into districts all served by their re spective lines without competition these recent combinations do not tend towards the concentration of ownership but only to the centrali zation of control they are the out come of a natural growth all of our great lines being built of small con ■solidated railroads all railroads nowadays have agreements as to through tickets and exchange cars the interstate commerce law of 1887 forbade division of traffic and discrimination between large and small shippers it also called for equal rates in the different states the inevitable result of the anti trust law of 1890 which made joint traffic associations illegal was to give impulse to railroad consoli dation these recent immense consolida tions have a very great but too often overlooked importance in se curing capital offering absolutely safe investments for the conserva tive man in this way they steady the money market and do away with the element of speculation to the working man they offer a broader field and greater induce ment than the old petty concerns at the same time they call for the assumption of greater responsibili ties and a higher capacity politically considered they hav great power but need not be feared they know that they depend on the people and that they will merely hurt themselves by overstepping their bounds we read that this movement is tending toward government control this may be true it may be that in the future the conditions will call for government ownership and con trol the alumni and students of oberlin are planning to erect a monument to its graduates who were killed the team the gymnasium meet with hav erford takes place on saturday march 15th and a good crowd is expected wyoming seminary was defeated saturday evening in the gymnasium by the lehigh team by a score of 42 to 30 until the latter part of the second half the score was even but at that point lehigh took a brace and won out the playing was slow but clean and only one foul was called during the entire game that the visiting team made such a large score was due to their excellent throwing of baskets lehigh did not display her usual form in this respect or the score would have probably been much larger pfahler threw seven goals half of the whole numbers obtained for wy oming taggart played the best game and made half of his team's score throwing 5 goals the visitors made 6 points before the home team obtained any but this lead was soon overcome and the score was successively 6 to 6 9 to 9 15 to 15 with the jcon 5 to 15 the first half ended it was a tie for the first part of the second half at 18 to 19 and 21 to 21 but then lehigh took the lead and at the close of the game the score stood 42 to 30 in favor of le high the line-up was as follows : lehigh position wyoming
