trackmen succumb to maroon rivals bethlehem pa tuesda v may 5 1925 lehigh netmen win initial victory price five cents stickmen defeated by maryland twelve full quota of dads desired saturday vol xxxii no 53 outscore lafayette oh the field but lose on cinder path committee has arranged attractive program for saturday lehigh sluggers meet with success on northern trip game with union called off because of rain defeat army and brown but lose to boston college — humble maroon rivals in well played matches at easton lose hard-fought game at latter institution on sat urday large crowd present two slugfests and one pitchers battle write home now gisriel wins two events lawall's play snappy college votes on student managers at friday meet terest are discussed other matters of current in attendance very poor the lehigh sluggers fared better on their jaunt through the north than they did earlier in the season when they travel ed in the other direction the trip originally included four games but old jupe pluvius in tervened on thursday afternoon when the team was to cross bats with union at schenectady of the three games played the lehigh tossers won two and lost one finishing on the win ning side in the contests with the army and brown but los ing to boston all the teams played were of high calibre and the success of the brown and white speaks well for the improvement of the nine in the opening tilt played at west point the lehigh team went on a batting spree collect ing fifteen hits many of which were for extra sacks and driv ing three army pitchers to the showers the final score was 10 to 5 which shows that few hits were wasted dixie walker started on the hill for lehigh and with good support held the cadets scoreless in the first four in nings after his teammates had piled up a substantial lead he somewhat relaxed and altho touched occasionally for a run one of which was garnered by flood with a home run clout the army never threatened se riously to equalize the total runs piled up by lehigh the lehigh batters got after roosma the starting pitcher for the army in the third in ning and shelled him from the mound leading in the attack were rice prior adams and hess easton was rushed to the rescue of his fellow hurler and although he succeeded in blanking lehigh in the fourth the brown and white batters again opened a heavy fire in the fifth and after three runs were scored easton went to the showers carrol followed but lehigh had not yet been satis fied and their collection of runs off him totalled two timber lake finished the game con on page 4 col 1 flood the army pinch hit ter batting for carrol in the eighth made good when he hit the scoreboard for a home run scoring a runner ahead of him johnny hayes was robbed of a circuit drive in the final frame once again the brown and white track and field men were forced to bow in defeat to their rivals from down the river by the score of 81 to 45 in previous seasons lehigh has been able to hold its own with the maroon fairly well on the track but always failed in the field events this year the tables were reversed in a deci sive manner the brown and white field men winning four of the six events in this depart ment while the runners were forced to be content with third place in all events with the ex ception of the quarter mile which was a true lehigh event all these places being captured by lehigh athletes lafayette retaliated for the shutout in this event by garnering all three places in the half mile the record for this meet was broken in the furlong when kurtz of the maroon completed the distance in 22 seconds flat which was 1-5 of a second less than the former record held by laconey allen also tied the dual meet record in the low hur dles when he topped the timbers i con on page 3 col 3 after dropping the first four matches of the season the le 7 high netters assumed a decided spurt and annexed its initial victory of the year when they took the strong lafayette team into camp on friday afternoon by a score of four to two the fact that the victory was gain ed at easton adds more glory to the triumph although the score was close the brown and white team cap tured all the matches with the exception of the last doubles in straight sets at the conclusion of the sin gles both teams had tallied an even number of points the lehigh victors in the singles were hagenbuch and miller who disposed of their opponents in easy fashion after losing his first set captain lawall staged a sensational rally which for a time had his man on the jump however sat urday at the grounds of the lat ter at college park maryland by the score of sto 3 this de feat greatly lessens lehigh's chances for the championship in the southern division even if all the remaining games are won johns-hopkins and mary land have yet to cross sticks with each other but regardless of which team wins it will be only one defeat for the loser the only way that lehigh could get back in the running is to have these teams to lose some of the weaker teams in the league in spite of the fact that the game was played on a field heavy with soft mud the play ing was very fast but the heavy footing had a tendency to tire the players towards the end of the game it looked like a le high victory for a time after the start because the ball was kept in the opponents terri tory a large part of the time the game was not many min utes old when m smith dented the rival's goal for the initial counter of the game giving le high a short-lived lead this be ing the only time during the game the brown and white players were ahead this score seemed to rouse considerable spirit in the marylanders and they retaliated with three goals before the half ended the second half was charac in drown hall the sophomore y m c a cabinet successfully or iginated a new idea in regard to tea dances only one admission price was charged it being the same for stags as for couples also a large as finan following the college picture on friday last the sophomore class held a meeting in packer hall at the meeting plans for calculus cremation were dis cussed and a list of professors for which made at this time to the senior class book committee and other bus iness was carried out the fol lowing men were appointed to the committee oliver f zurn chairman hartland law robert trainer davitt bell brooks white h m shipley f nicholas clyde davis r swindell e pakenham much discussion took place as to the advisability of having a june hop this year and it was finally decided that if the com mittee on student activities would grant a petition to hold the dance after the alumni dance that all efforts would be jmade to have a june hop this year at a very meagerly attended college meeting held last fri day in packer hall the student body voted on wrestling and swimming managers the way the votes were polled elected p w sinwell as wrestling manag er with 179 votes fred m fish er manager of the freshman team with i6o votes and h w mccord as assistant manager with 97 in swimming i b miles was the college's choice with 166 votes to his favor h o nutting is to manage the frosh natators by virtue of ob taining second place with 147 votes and w f feuerbach is assistant manager with 122 counts ' william gairns chairman of the committee on arrange ments for dad's day made some remarks pertaining to the forthcoming affair and urged that the students do all in their power to bring the day to a suc cessful culmination classes will be suspended on the morning of saturday may 9 and amuse ment will be provided by the glee club and other sources to be arranged later on the bot tom of the ballots was a place on which the men were to speci con on page 4 col 6 the lehigh baseball team will reappear at taylor field to morrow with seton hall fur nishing the opposition the vis itors were given a severe troun cing last year and are coming to bethelhem with a strong team hoping to avenge their defeat of last year • to date seton hall has been playing a good brand of ball having given columbia and villanova strong opposition be fore they were finally conquer ed they also have a number of very creditable victories to their credit however on the basis of comparative scores le high seems to be the stronger team and should win handily seton hall has three pitchers available for mound duty to morrow ryan outwater and meehan the latter will un doubtedly draw the hurling as signment tomorrow though the others will be ready if occasion demands lehigh has four pit chers in seven runs having established this lead the freshmen exper ienced little trouble in main taining it the game ended in the eighth inning by agreement of both teams carroll on the mound for the frosh kept his opponents under control and allowed seven safe ly scattered hits his support was good with the exception of the opening frames when sev eral unnecessary errors were made this win makes the third consecutive victory for the yearlings and they are estab lishing a good record largely through their ability to over come an early lead this was the fifth game of the visitors in a week and they were rather hard pressed for pitchers role started on the mound for mackenzie but weak ened and was forced to retire under a fusilade of hits in the third and was replaced by gal lagher who had been
