was in every way a most happy one the football ability and spirit which dornin has shown during his two years at lehigh have won the respect of the team individually and collec tively and this popularity combined with his strong executive ability and energy shoulcl well qualify him for the responsible post to which he has been elected dornin has filled his position at left end both this year and last in a manner de serving of the highest praise his work on the defensive is fast and aggressive and when occasion re quires he is an excellent ground gainer and place kicker immediately after the election of the captain rice fisher and chamberlain all of the class of 1903 were put in nomination for assistant manager of the football team the new captain who is just 20 years old is not the first of his family to lend his services to le high his brother george a dornin 99 played on both his varsity football and lacrosse teams while his mother has shown her self by numerous services to be a most valuable friend to lehigh athletics college orchestra orchestra practice there will be an important or chestra practice on thursday even ing at 7.15 o'clock as this is to be the last practice before the con cert let every man be present to put forth every effort in order to make the concert a success mandolin club rehearsal the mandolin club will have a rehearsal at 2.30 p.m on sunday in delta house at the university of chicago a new course in foreign commerce is to be offered next spring it is in tended for the training of men who expect to become consuls to foreign countries or to engage in importing and exporting in preparation for this course dr henry rand hat field of the department of politicals economy has been sent to europe for six months to study the com mercial educational work there at the annual meeting of the intercollegiate lacrosse associa tion of america held in philadel phia last saturday johns hopkins university resigned from the league according to the balti more " sun " the reason for doing so is as follows : the hopkins delegates were in structed to take this action by the athletic association of the uni versity as expressing for the faculty student body and lacrosse team a condemnation of ungracious treat ment reported to have been ac corded the j h u team by ste vens institute last spring and it was given as an ultimatum that hopkins will play stevens no more the delegates of the other mem bers of the association — stevens and lehigh — would not accept the resignation of the hopkins and further action will be taken at a meeting of one delegate from each team at south bethlehem pa next saturday the resolution of the hopkins is not based upon stevens conduct last spring alone but is the result of a dissatisfaction with stevens methods of play and treatment of visitors for years the offense last year however was stated to be so flagrant in discourteous treatment that the faculty of the j h u has forbidden any more games with stevens the j it u has defeated stevens for the last two years the real significance of the resig nation is not that the hopkins will withdraw from all games with le high and stevens but that stevens will be dropped and the league will be formed of hopkins lehigh and one or possibly two new teams the decision in the matter rests with lehigh whether she will up hold stevens or side with hopkins and it was said yesterday by one qualified to know that lehigh will side with hopkins this would be lehigh's natural course as she has far more to lose in dropping a great university located in a big city and having the champion college team of the country it has likewise been stated that pennsylvania and swarthmore have decided to play no more games continued on third page for the first time in a few years lehigh is to be represented by a college orchestra under the leadership of felix golia the musical associations is and has been since the opening of college hard at work preparing to give a recital which will not only reflect great credit upon itself but will recall those days when lehigh musical association ranked foremost among the colleges efforts have been made to make this a great success not only by those who are mem bers of the association but by out side talent who have willingly at tended the rehearsals for the express purpose of assisting the leader the final success of this association rests upon the students let every man in college attend the concert friday night and thus give encour agement to the members the annual minstrel show given by the students of lehigh univer sity will take place in the opera house on the evening of decem ber 15 and from present indica tions will be far superior to those of former years in an interview general manager girdler spoke substantially as fol lows : " the songs will be entirely new and the chorus will be composed chiefly of glee club men the star musical organizations of the col lege being well represented also for the mandolin club the glee cub quartet and a mandolin quartet will take part the end men are in the main old favorites but several new men have been do ing uncommonly good work in that line and will probably fill some of the places " there will be some pyramid work and fencing bouts possibly fancy dancing also but no tum bling as has been usual in previous years " the second part consists of an original burlesque written espe cially for this purpose by an old lehigh man who does not wish his name to be known and will in troduce a number of interesting specialties the costumes coming from philadelphia and being de signed solely for this occasion the managers have been ma terially assisted by several old le high men who took part in the minstrel shows of previous years and an unusual number of gags has been prepared the proceeds are to help equip the base ball team for its southern trip and it is hoped that every lehigh man will do his best to make this event a success the burnt cork artists have been working hard and will provide a good evening's entertainment so every one who attends will not only be helping his alma mater but will be certain to get his
