morning be ginning at 1 1.30 prof franklin's trip very interesting im pressions of cuba on monday prof franklin of the electrical department returned to the university after a visit through cuba where he went to recuper ate his health having been com pletely broken down by the unceas ing hours cf attention which he has given to the equipment of the new physical labratory concerning his trip prof franklin said " i was very much impressed by the easy going way with which the people of cuba seem to look at things as compared with the american point of view it is as if their energy comes and goes with the size of the sugar crop in which they centre all their hopes " the men who own property are unanimous in their demand for free trade and a stable government while those who are not property holders have purely sentimental feelings in regard to independence at santiago he visited the scenes of most of the recent battles from nearly all of which he brought back some souvenier at havana ! 1 he visited the university of havana with an old lehigh man who now ; is at the head of public affairs there j here the general desire seems to be that the united states instead of giving an annual allowance for the advancement of education as has been suggested should give a sum of 15,000,000 all in one pay ment prof franklin was quite im pressed by a lecture delivered by one of the professors upon the con ditions that determine a straight line here old time styles of mathematics are taught and re j suited in the students giving very beautiful discussions of the ques tion at mantanzas he visited the army barracks and was particu larly struck by the intense desire of the soldiers to get home this condition is very easily understood the life in the isolated barracks be ing a very lonely one as a whole prof franklin thought the island a very desolate looking place and appeared quite reconciled toward returning to his native land ■»■-•-♦. the trials for the relay team will be held on machine was installed at homestead and is worth many thousands of dollars " it is a very accurate one and has a large scope it will register the stress required to break the finest human hair and the stress required to break a 2 inch round of steel i at once accepted it for the de partment of mechanical engineer ing and gave directions for its immediate shipment to the m e section of the physical laboratory details of the machine will be given you later mr cornelius has been very active in securing gifts for the new laboratory of mechani cal engineering and this the finest gift of all is the fifth of his series yours truly j f klein informal dinner a number of the washington alumni held an informal d nner at fritz reuters on saturday evening march 23 among those present were messrs watson freihold weakly lee stevenson bailey jessup douglas pittis bayard gass perley lukens barnard leidy farnham and reamer fraternity base ball each fraternity is requested to send one representative to the meeting to be held 3 p.m sunday at the phi delta theta house south bethlehem this meeting has been called to discuss the advi-ability of organizing an inter fraternity base ball league for the coming season any fraternity failing to send a delegate will be considered as not desiring to be represented in the league prospects for a good j team on saturday on saturday the base ball season opens with lehigh having rutgers as her opponent as captain par sons and coach carr have had the men in training for some time they should feel confident of winning the recent bad weather has so seri ously interfered with the outdoor practice^that only three afternoons of this week have been suitable for playing despite all this the men have shown up well on last sat urday the team lined up for the first time this season against the scrub they played in splendid form and proved to be a winning team every place is being hotly contested • for and the man that wears a lehigh uniform can feel that he has earned it lilly at first in playing an excel lent game for a man that has been accustomed to catch his ability to cover a large space around the bag makes him a valuable man for the place eisenhart at second is improving rapidly on form he beats holl ingsworth and with a little more practice it is safe to say he will play a strong game reese at short is also improving but needs more practice parsons of course is playing his usual good game persons behind the bat is catch ing in fine form his throwing to the bases is remarkable and it is safe to predict that more than one man will be caught stealing second he is also a heavy hitter and such a man is always desirable sellers is showing up in better form than last year taylor is also doing well and before the season is over is expec ted to give a good account of him self alder bachman and deschwei nitz are catching everything that comes within reach the line-up will probably be as follows : lilly 03 first base eisenhart 03
