( con on page 4 col 2 the university of pennsylva nia's baseball team returned from a very successful south ern trip and in the first home game after defeating four out of five of the nines in the south they handed the lehigh team a 5-4 defeat in a very hard fought contest this was the third de feat of the brown and white nine to date due to captain adams ill ness dixie walker took the mound against the red and blue in the first two inings the perm ball players hit walker freely and collected four runs fields started the game by driv ing the second ball pitched to deep left field for a triple and scored a minute later on trem per's single to the same garden in the second frame two hits a walk and two more singles re sulted in three more runs for lehigh's lacrosse team loom ed up as a serious contender for championship honors in the southern lacrosse league this season when it defeated the speedy stevens team last sat urday afternoon score eight to five the game throughout was hard-played the stevens com ination fighting to the end re gardless of the hopeless lead which the brown and white players maintained during most of the contest in the opening minutes of play stevens the famous lehigh thespian or ganziation and judging from the efforts expended and the ex tensive arrangements essayed every ticket holder can safely look forward to an eye-opener on saturday evening jack callon producer and director is very much pleased with the great improvement in the last week's practices and he is now bending his efforts to smoothing down the rough spots in final preparation for the dress rehearsal on thurs con on page 4 col 1 chemicals listen to prof klein officers also made nominations for next year's the first home ball game of the year will be played on wed nesday afternoon at taylor stadium when the lehigh team will play host to the rutgers nine the scarlet team just emerged victorious from a slug fest last saturday against th c pennsylvania military college team by the score of 12-11 lehigh's stock will be great ly bolstered this week due to the spirit manifested against penn sylvania in the last game and also due to the fact that captain adams will once again be in the lineup as yet it has not been definitely decided as to whether adams or dußois will do the hurling however if adams does not work in the box he will certainly patrol his old position in center field and his hitting will be an invaluable asset if bob adams is coach bald win's selection for mound duty hayes will be shifted to center field and either merrill or walker will play in right field on the other hand if dußois is selected to do the pitching the lehigh outfield will be compos ed of three veterans who com prise one of the best fielding and hitting combinations in collegi ate ranks the rutgers outfit will come to bethlehem with many fami liar faces in their lineup the most prominent will be hazel in the outfield terr ill next year's football captain in the outfield ; butcher catcher and captain of last year's baseball team and raab cantini and beekman — all lettermen the new bruns wick aggregation has a hard hitting team and the lehigh pitchers will be forced to ex tend themselves to the utmost to keep the batting averages of the opponents down rutgers has a trio of select hurlers but as yet it is not possible to say who will do the slab work the prob able hurler will undoubtedly be selected from wade welf or krenter lafayette as guests concluding the last number of a most highly applauded and appreciated conceit the lehigh musical clubs lived up to and far exceded the expectations of all the 500 who were fortunate enough to attend the south side junior high last saturday the concert more than told the success that the organiza tion had entire performance went off without a flaw each group meeting with a similar amount of success to pick one out standing numbers would be a difficult thing for any one for judging by each round of ap chairman of the board the man elected to this position conducts the meetings and dic tates the policy of the board subject to its approval pre viously the editorial and busi ness staffs functioned practical ly as separate units and this office will go a long way tow ards having them work with more co-ordination the edi tors will continue to run the edi torial portion of the paper as in the past the position of man aging editor was abolished since it was found that he would have practically nothing to do and the office would only be a title with no work attached to it the offices on the business staff nvill remain the same as in the past this rather important change was brought about only after considerable discussion and comparison with other col lege magazines and is being tried somewhat as an experi ment since the constitution provides that the question of whether or not it will remain as a permanent thing is to be vot ed on next spring a discus sion was held relative to elec tions on the following day and it was decided to hold them at 1 o'clock on saturday afternoon a committee composed of con on page 2 col 3 con on page 2 col 3 the yearling baseball team defeated the moravian nine sat urday on taylor field to the tune of 8-0 dave seltzer was on the mound for the freshmen and was in excellent form allowing only four hits and fanning eigh teen moravian batsmen the first run was made in the sec ond inning and credited to swartzstein who tapped the ball for a neat three-base hit and was brought home by sulli van a rally in the fifth inning tallied four more runs to the cre dit of the freshmen the game then was uneventful until the eighth when three additional con on page 3 col 5 following the musical clubs concert on last saturday night the freshman class staged a well arranged dance in drown hall there were about seven ty-five couples dancing to the excellent music of the la mig non club orchestra and the le high thoubadors who alternated throught the evening thus prov iding continuous music the hall was attractively decorated in royal blue and white the class colors making it very at tractive following twelve o'clock refreshments were serv the lehigh university ten nis team lost its first encounter of the season on saturday after noon when the strong philadel phia college of osteopathy net ters travelled to bethlehem and annexed a victory by capturing four of the six matches altho pushed at times the visitors led by their anchor man carl fis cher managed to eke out a well deserved victory considering the condition of the courts which were not in the best playing shape both teams did extremely well if one may take the first matches of the season as a criterion the brown and white displayed plenty of form to assure its co horts of a successful season while the loss of fritz mercur is severely felt coach carouth er's proteges should experience little difficulty in winning many of the remaining twelve match es koegler last year's captain had little troule in winning his match with allen the visiting man won a single game koegler turning in a love set in addition to his six to one win naturally all of the interest of the huge crowd which bank ed the sides of tha courts was centered on carl fischer for mer intercollegiate champion as well as number eight man in the national rankings two years ago his play was sensational and to lawall's credit it must be mentioned that he lost to a man who ranks among the best in the court game captain lawall put up a great fight but was not equal to the task of vanquishing the mighty fischer fischer captured the first set with ease but was given a harder battle in the second when the lehigh captain managed to win four of the ten games herbst defeated hagenbuch by the same score in both sets six to four the brown and white man finished in fine form but his spirited rally was too late to do much damage trumbull of lehigh won his first set with barnes by a six to one score the latter rallied for the second match but suc cumbed after a struggle nine to seven the fans were treated to some tennis of championship calibre when they witnessed the lawall - koegler and fischer allen match each man con tributed some wonderful shots after obtaining a four to noth ing lead the home combination fell apart and won but two of the remaining fifteen treasurer nutting urged that the second year men settle their dues as promptly as possible that the class should face the banquet expenses with a full coffer mr nuttings sugges tion was spurt of ten games that the crowd was giv en a great exhibition of tennis on the part of fischer who made many scintillating shots con on page 3 col 1 the great social event of the year the junior prom is but a few days away it is one to which the whole college is look ing forward and not only the junior class since the abolish ment of house parties it is a rare occasion when the students are afforded the opportunity of a week-end such as the one which is on tap this week and from forecasts it promises to be taken advantage of by many from present indications hotel accommodations will c as scarce as boats on the lehigh the large number of delegates at tending the alumni secretaries conference combined with the still larger number of visitors who will be here for this gala week-end will tax the capacity of local hotels the members of the various committees have been working dilegently and the results will c certain to show themselves on friday evening the orchestra which has been secured is prob ibly one of the leading dance or chestras rendering syncopation at the present time the rhy mth will be furnished by carl fenton's orchestra which has been made famous by its pro
