bethlehem pa tuesday april 7 1925 frosh trackmen display prowess wilson completes successful talks sophs win inter class track meet vol xxxii no 48 price five cents civils on new york inspection tour lehigh sluggers travel southward kanaly pleased with excel lent showing of fresh men outscore other classes by large margin in hard fought meet technical interest engineers view places of score make trip men presence obtained thru v series of four lectures vastly appreciated by lehigh may meet maroon frosh gisriel breaks record adam's absence keenly felt baseball team to engage in three games on tour a series of four such stirring lectures as have rarely been heard at lehigh were delivered to the university students by the hon j stitt wilson it is doutbful whether any speaker has raised such a storm of dis cussion at lehigh upon the true significance of education and the nature of man the address es were a criticism of mod ern education delivered as the college lecture at south side high school on friday at 11 a m ; the message for education from science which he gave at drown hall on friday 7:30 p m ; man's social responsibil ity at drown hall saturday at 1 30 p m ; and the technique of the spiritual life which was given in packer chapel on sunday at 11 a m the addres ses were enthusiastically receiv ed by the students many of whom followed through the en tire lecture course all who did so felt they had received a new insight into the problems which are now confronting mankind con on page 4 col 2 mr wilson is peculiarly equipped to speak to college stu dents upon social and ethical questions he was graduated at northwestern university and while there spent a great deal of his time doing social work in the slums of chicago particul arly among the workers in the packing house industries after some years there he went to great britain and lived in the slums of london and glasgow where he continued to investi gate conditions he returned to america hired the largest thea tre in san * francisco and preached there for five years tute of last year is making a good bid for the berth the team has been practicing very diligently and scrub games are very common on taylor field due to coach baldwin's illness and the bad weather the men are still a little behind in the season's work however in the first game of any account which was played last saturday against a collection of bethle hem professionals the brown and white batsmen garnered twelve hits from the combined pitching of two of the best hur lers in the city ranks hess the lehigh outfielder came through with a double and two singles while captain adams followed with a triple and a double le high won by a 10-3 score con on page 4 col.~z the lehigh team will have one big handicap to overcome the lehigh university base ball team will open its 1925 sea son with the annual southern trip of three days duration which starts on april 8 the first game will be played against princeton then the university of maryland game at baltimore the following day and the final game versus the marines at quantico on april 10 although it is still early to make any prophecies concern ing the success of the brown and white nine it is believed by the supporters of the team that captain adams and his men will have one of the most suc cessful seasons ever enjoyed by a lehigh team coach baldwin lost only one man from his 1924 team and that was rogers first baseman for the position pri or seems to be the man to play the base but kirchner a substi lacrosse squad numbers largest lehigh's r o t c wins war game musical clubs set for home concert bartlett announces three competitions statistics on number of men enrolled in athletic branches and handball will include boxing fencing ing tactical problems beats lafayette in game involv full rehearsals are ordered after easter holidays in the annual inter-class track meet held on saturday the sophomores emerged victorious with 62 1-2 points to their cred it their nearest competitors were the frosh with 39 points followed by the juniors with 35 1-2 points the seniors having but 16 to show for their after noo/i's work the meet was re plete with thrills and was mark ed by outstanding performanc es on both track and field the foremost of these was the breaking of the record in the discus throw by gisriel of 27 he hurled the discus for a dis tance of 127 feet 9 inches which is six feet eleven inches better than the former record this was the first real taste of competition this year for the track and field aspirants and some exceptionally fast times were recorded in several of the track events the quarter mile run was the losest of the after noon captain croll gained the lead at the crack of the gun but as soon as the runners entered the back stretch cox sprinted and placed himself on equal terms with the former they continued until rounding the turn when croll again assumed the lead but cox was not to be denied and soon after entering the home stretch again shared the lead with the diminuitive captain neither one was able to forge ahead of the other and they broke the tape simultan eously in the two mile run chicker ing 28 broke the tape after a gruelling race the diminuitive freshman lead during the most con on page 4 col 1 yesterday the 6th the senior civil engineers left bethlehem for new york where they will spend three days in inspecting various plans and factories in that vicinity the trip is under the supervision of prof h g payrow and two other members of the faculty prof lewis and prof fogg are also on the trip con on page 4 col 3 the first place visited was the american cable co which consumed all of yesterday morning since the company has two different plants in the af ternoon the plainfield sewage disposal plant was visited and the equipment which is of the latest type studied today the lehigh contingent inspected the new sewage dis posal plant which was opened only a few days ago the re mainder of the morning was de voted to the ventilating and heating systems of the federal reserve bank building and to the new york stock exchange only the mechanisms of the place however will be open to inspection or speculation in the afternoon the party will inspect the claremont ter minal of the lehigh valley railroad and the c r r of n j coal dumpers most of wednesday morning will be devoted to the western union telegraph company which will be one of the most interesting part of the whole tour the latest developments in electrical apparatus techni cal operation and business man agement will all be observed the laboratory of the new junior prom plans being completed raqueteers busy on indoor court are resurfaced using gym floor until courts week-end prom to be one feature of full the department of physical education has compiled some very interesting statistics con cerning the number of students taking part in the various branches of athletics at lehigh in the field of recognized sports lacrosse leads with 115 candidates while the track men are not far behind with an ag gregate of 105 aspirants there were about 80 men out for the spring football practice which has just been concluded and the two baseball teams var sity and freshman have a field of 100 men from which the coaches may make their choices boxing handball and fencing each retain about 40 men whose primary athletic interest cen ters around those sports there are only two regular classes that are being held at the present time swimming in struction classes and the gym nasium exercises about 150 men are signed up for the for mer while the roll call of the latter amounts to 230 men the above data shows the number of students who are in terested in some form of athlet ics and the total 925 shows the actual percentage of the entire enrollment who participate in some form of recognized physi cal exercise the above figures do not includes candidates for any of the various manager ships mustard and cheese men or other men whose extra-curri cula activities do not permit in | terest to be taken in athletics one of the biggest social func tions of the season is being look ed forward to in the junior prom on april 24th this will probably be the last large col lege dance before the june hop on alumni day plans have been completed by the committee which consists of bond chairman swindell mer rill and shaheen excellent mu sic is assured by the engage ment of carl fenton's orchestra which is nationally known by their playing for brunswick records elaborate decorations will transfigure the ballroom in drown hall the refreshment committee has arranged to take care of their end in a manner which will make the evening a success from their standpoint the date set for the prom is that preceding the bethlehem performance of the mustard and cheese show russian around with the athletic games scheduled for saturday the week-end affords an excel lent opportunity for the enter tainment of the fair sex professor bartlett of the physical education department announces three intra-mural competitions for personal cham pionships of lehigh university the tournaments will be held in boxing fencing and handball some publicity has already been accorded the boxing tour nament with the result that a number of men have signified their intention of entering a singles and doubles champion ship shall result from the hand ball tournament the winners will be entered in the lehigh valley a a u championships which will be held at the beth lehem steel gym con on page 4 col 5 competition for the fretz cup in fencing will start the week following the easter vaca tion the fretz cup was donat ed last year to be awarded to the winner of the fencing tourna ment at lehigh entries should after the excellent showing made by the freshmen track team in the inter-mural meet saturday it is a lamentable fact that the yearlings have no oth er meets scheduled for them with the exception of a relay team which will be sent to the perm relays the frosh will en gage in no more competitive ac tion unless the tentative plans for a meet with the lafayette freshmen are sanctioned by the athletic committees of the two universities all the things which were predicted of the frosh material ized when the final score show ed them to have tallied thirty nine points enough to give them second place considering that they did not enter men in either of the hurdling events or the pole vault their exhibition was nothing but splendid coach kanaly was pleased beyond words over the performance of his proteges of the ten events in which they competed the yearlings won four firsts three seconds four thirds and two fourths billmeyer chickering hazard and straub won the hundred two mile 880 yard run and broad jump respectively in ad dition the fleet hundred yard man came in but inches behind cox who won the 220 chicker ing who was originally entered for the half mile event won the long race of the afternoon after a sensational finish during which he overtook askin in the home stretch and breasted the tape several yards ahead his time was seven seconds shy of the inter-class record hazard had little trouble in winning his race straub broke a record made last year when he better ed sanford's 24 jump by one foot ten inches the new mark is twenty-one feet three inches aitken was another of the yearlings who ran well losing out for first place in the mile by a few yards he came in third in the eight-eighty while fry ran fourth in that race star con on page 4 col 4 yesterday the musical clubs had their last rehearsal previ ous to the coming easter holi days both the glee and man dolin clubs went through an or der of perfectly executed num bers much to the satisfaction of their director a i mchose for little time now remains before the appearance of the organiza tion before the students and bethlehemites saturday the 18 that this ooncert has now the confidence of music followers may be evinced by the rapid sale of choice seats as little time now remains manager bill leavens urges those de siring good seats to get in touch with him or one of the mem bers of the club as soon as pos sible the week following the eas ter vacations will be devoted to several full rehearsals of the arrangements for the dance which will be held in the school gymnasium immediately after the concert are being made by jay w picking a good orches tra is promised for this most fitting climax to the concert con on page 4 col 4 attention juniors the junior class banquet will be held on wednesday ap ril 22 at the hotel traylor al lentown an excellent program has been arranged by the ban quet committee and a large number of men are urged to attend tickets can be obtained on thursday afternoon the team representing the lehigh r 0 t c defeated the lafay ette team at the latter institu tion in a miniature war game by the score of 113 to 109 the game was played on a large scale miritary map the purpose of the contest was to demonstrate the application of tactical principles involved in the meeting engagement of two hostile forces each one be ing composed of one company estimates of situations or ders for advance orders for at tack and actions of respective commanders were called for as the game proceeded and the re spective teams were judged on the tactical ability shown each team was composed of five mem bers namely one captain who was company comander one first lieutenant who was second in command an advanced guard commander and the re spective platoon commanders colonel c j smith an allen town national guard officer was chief umpire the other judges were r 0 t c officers of the two institutions the le high team was composed of a l bayles a s king j b aus tin j m leib s b hutchin son r l davis c b gallagh er and c w beggs even tho the score would indicate that the game was closely contested it was apparent from the start that lehigh would win out the points were scored on the basis of five for each c<m on page 4 col 2 tennis prospects are looking up for the 1925 season the out door practice has not as yet be gun but the raquet wielders have been doing good work at the gym on the indoor court every afternoon the regular outdoor practice courts are be ing resurfaced with clay new nets are being bought and iron net posts are being installed in concrete bases these courts are to be ready for immediate use following the holidays at which time the varsity will be gin their regular spring prac tice in real earnest the team this year promises to be a well balanced one four of last year's varsity are back lewall captain with koegler hagenbuch and phillips prom ise to give the coach quite a wealth of material to work on added to that the
