invited to attend the forum the regular meeting of the forum literary society will be held on wednesday evening at 7.15 o'clock in saucon hall the subject of debate will be re solved that england is justified in her course in the transvaal every one is cordially invited to be present the civil . engineering society held its regular meeting on thurs day evening in packer hall at which the number present was very gratifying the business transact ed consisted of the s-lection of the first and third thursdays of each month as the time of meeting here after the next one therefore being december 7th mr wilson instructor in civil engineering was introduced as the first speaker and he gave a very interesting talk upon " the inter continental railway dealing more particularly with the experiences of the party his remarks were in part as follows : continued on second page " originally there were two parties appointed to do the survey ing for this inter continental rail way and each consisted of six men each of whom had a special part of the work the instructions deliv ered to these parties by the author ities in charge of the affair at washington were very elaborate not only was the best route avail able to be selected but the topog raphy had to be taken for a con siderable width on each side the various plants encountered were to be noted all the rocks in the vicin ity were to be examined and a re cord kept of them and a description of the people along the route was to be given each party started out with six tents and an immense variety of other materials thought to be necessary to the expedition loaded upon donkeys but before they had proceeded far they found this too cumbersome and accord ingly left some of it along the way it was found that it was impossible to follow out the instructions given them on account of the smallness of their party and the rate with which they . were supposed to advance to make matters worse three of the party took sick and thus the whole of the work had to be done by the remaining three the geological and botanical parts of the survey and ail others deemed not actually necessary consequently had to be dropped the line was advanced through peru and equa dor at a comparatively rapid rate but several obstacles were encount ered some of these were the scarcity of food and the distance at many times from any town or village money was not of much value frequently for more could be bought with an empty tin can than by any other means the survey was finally finished but the work is not as accurate as it might be owing to the fact that no astro nomical observations were taken it is quite unlikely that the whole of this line will ever be built but doubtless many parts of it will when the team which left south bethlehem on friday to play annapolis was weakened by the loss of two of the best players whose positions were difficult to nil that is mccarthy centre and lindley full-back this coupled with the fact that two others received injuries during the game which compelled them to stop playing accounts in a measure for the rather one-sided score the naval team put up a very strong aggressive kind or play however and the game throughout was one of its hardest played this season there were no particularly bril liant plays on either side for annapolis the two guards hal ligan and belknap and ' the quarter-back gannon excelled the good work of halligan being especially noticeable for lehigh gledhill put up the best game until he was injured james reese and dornin also did well fuller's work at full-back was of a very good order considering the time he has been practicing in that posi tion peeples at left guard made a good showing but was slow in tackling and scovil at left end played a very weak game most of the runs being made around his end continued on fourth page in the first half james kicked off for lehigh and the ball was ran back only a short distance a series of line-bucking by the cadets resulted in very little gain aud lehigh secured the ball and kept it in her opponents territory most of the time towards the close of the half annapolis got possession of the ball and by steady rushes brought it up close to lehigh's goal chamberlain was compelled to leave the game at this point on account of an injured shoulder after a few more gains manly was sent through payne for the first touchdown wortman kicked the goal james kicked off but there was no more scoring during this half the ball being in the cadets terri tory when time was called in the second half wade kicked off for the naval academy lehigh tried the line but failing to gain was compelled to kick fuller's attempted punt was blocked by halligan and the ball rolled over the line where wortf man fell on it for the second touch down he kicked an easy goal james kicked off and the annap olis eleven promptly rushed the ball into our territory gledhill was put out of the game by an injured knee and canfield took his place the navy attempted a goal from the field but the ball struck manly their right half the third lecture of the course on modern social problems was given on friday in the physical laboratory by dr josiah strong of new york who delivered the first lecture of the series lie spoke on the subject " religious movement for social betterment and gave in substance the follow ing : " the church is beginning to make an adaptation in her methods to the changes which are continually going on geological records show us that in the past everything was suddently changed and many things most common became rare and others most rare were multiplied but those com mon forms that could adapt them selves to the new conditions were also multiplied while the others perished therefore this adapt ability brings forth harmony between life and its environment if the church of the present day wishes to succeed she must adapt herself to the changed conditions one of the last great changes in the church took place at the time of eenaissance and reformation and in explanation of this change it may be said that the individual came to a self-consciousness which was marked by a return and an advance a return to the study of the scriptures and an advance in adapting religious truth to the individual " the religious movements of today may be marked also by a return and an advance ; a return to the teachings of christ and an advance in the application of his teachings to social problems religion is becoming the most important of social forces the races most religious have the high est and noblest social organization formerly the church was sup posed to have no business with a man's dirty face or his naked back but was supposed to be concerned only with saving his soul now ideas have changed and the change is really to bring man iv right relations with his neighbor as well as with his god " civilization which was indi vidualistic in type has become social through the change in man's interpretation of the teachings of the gospel the progress of science has also aided in the change of the attitude of the church by pointing out " thirty years ago christianity was an individualistic religion but today deeper insight into the teachings of the bible have dis covered it to be a profoundly social religion we learn from these teachings that men fitted for earth are best fitted for heaven continued on third page the brown and white lehigh defeated south bethlehem pa tuesday novembeb 21 1899 lehigh university university address the naval cadets win an easy victory
