the department of mechanical engineering has received a valuable set of drawings from the naval department at washington to be used for the purpose of instruction in the new course in naval archi tecture and marine engineering the following letter from secre tary of navy long accompanied the drawings : washington feb 9 1900 slk — in reply to your letter dated december 21 1.899 request ing blue prints of hull plans etc of naval vessels of different types to be used for the purpose of in struction in naval architecture and marine engineering a course in which branches has recently been established at lehigh university i have to inform you that t he chief constructor of the navy to whom your letter was referred reports as follows the bureau has prepared the following prints which it is be lieved should be supplied and requests authority to forward the same to the lehigh university viz thirteen sheets of labels for the arrangement of data booklet each of gunboat prince ton and orusiers dixie solace and yosemite specifications for inspection of hull material for vessels of u s navy instructions for riveting naval vessels in accordance with the foregoing report the bureau oi construction and repair has this day been au thorized to send to the lehigh university the blue prints pamph lets etc mentioned in the above list very respectfully john d long secy navy <» campus note j h gledhill 00 has left col lege and entered the employ of the lehigh valley at the south easton shops machine design the exhibition given in the gymnasium on friday evening proved to be one of the most suc cessful ever witnessed at lehigh the gymnasium was tastefully decorated for the occasion being draped with the college colors flags and emblems intermingled with the stars and stripes there was no unnecessary delay in carrying out the features of the program and all the work showed a characteristic snap and vim this was generally due to the effi cient training which the men re ceived under the direction of the gymnasium instructor mr smith who deserves much credit for hi 4 * faithful work in preparati n for the performance a most pleasing part of the pro gram was the music rendered by the mandolin club as this was only the second appearance of the club this year it was greeted en thusisstically by the large and at tentive audience the programme of the evening was as exhibition given by ross on the rings was exceptionally fine from the clever work done in the exhibition it is evident that if the men continue their enthusiastic training until washington's birth day lehigh will make an excel lent showing in the dual meet with lafayette l an important rehearsal of the glee club will be held wednes day february 21 at 2 p m in christmas hall all members are urged to be present | heitshu . the gymnasium was the scene of a delightful reception tendered to the new men of the university by dr and mrs drown on satur day evening although the inclemency of the weather prevented many of the in cited guests from being present a goodly number braved the storm and partook of the hospitality of the president and his wife the gymnasium was especially decorated for the occasion which added greatly to the cosy appear ance of the interior at eight o'clock dr and mrs drown re oeived the guests in the gymnasium proper after which dr drown spoke words of welcome to all present and thanked those who so madly aided in the program of the evening the president further announced that he was fortunate to jpeure mr alexander black the temous picture play writer to en ifirtain his guests : after a few words of introduc tion mr black presented his popu lar and delightful picture play entitled the maid and the guards man in three acts at the end of the first act the mandolin-guitar limb played a selection in their usual good manner after which the 8'lee club rendered an original song which was the hit of the evening at the end of the second act the mandolin-guitar club played a se teeiion followed by a medley by a partette composed of digby hig gins daniels and morgan the picture play was fully ap preciated by all present as was blown by the continual rounds of applause at the end of the play the guests were asked to adjourn to the large rooms on the first floor here refreshments were served fol lowed by a social half-hour during which all became belter acquainted with classmates and friends besides the freshmen there were present many of the faculty with ifoeir wives and daughters and a dumber of friends of dr and mrs drown the officers of the upper classes together with the choir and the members of the musical organisa tions were also present f a daboll c e 96 at pres nt located in philadelphia spent several days in town last week the examinations in freshman machine design for the juniors and sophomores who have not passed that subject will be held wednes day feb 28 at 2 p m the duai winter meet with le s ette will be held in the gymna sium on thursday afternoon every effort has been put forth to make the meet a success and it is expected that there will be a large attendan e of the undergraduates to cheer our contestants in the differ ent events there are three en tries for each event from each col lege and the events will be as fol lows : horizontal bar parallel bar side horse fence vault rope climb club
