elected to editorial board from lower classes freshmen are divided into groups for usual friday lectures all football candi dates who have signed up for spring practice are ur gently requested to report on wednesday and thursday afternoons of this week spring practice proves to be successful innovation harvey 09 talks initial intra-mural contest en thusiastically received by men fundamentals stressed successful competition speech to be distributed in pamphlet form by high school pilot is high man mustard and cheese fast progressing noticeable results seen un der mr callan the new coach a real show addressing one thousand sen iors of the central high school of philadelphia on the weekly trip friday afternoon prof h r bosey reiter head of the department of physical educa tion was given a most rousing reception professor reiter spoke on his favorite subject lessons of the gdiriron at the conclusion of his remarks the students clamored for more and the congenial bosey was forced to respond to this ap plause dr o'brein the phy sical director at the school was also very much impressed with the address of prof reiter the address was taken in detail by a stenographer and it is under stood will be distributed among the four thousand students of the school schools that are listed for future talks from pro fessor reiter are red bank n j long branch n j mont clair n j acamedy and high school and doylestown high school lacrosse prospects look promising the annual election of the of ficers of the brown and white board was held last friday at a joint meeting of the business and editorial staffs j w maxwell 26 was elected editor in-chief and o f zurn 3rd 26 was elected managing editor j a covert 27 and j e shurt leff 27 were elected as assist tant editors on the business staff c k zug 26 was elected business manager and h l phyfe 26 was elected . circul ation manager the competition for positions on the editorial board as as sociate editor was one of the most successful ever held by the brown and white a much larger number of men than ever before entered the compeition and more than half of these remained in it to the end there were four men chos en from each of the lower class es they were : — sophomores lawrence timen j gordon ridsdale irving broads jack laudig freshmen ralph m goepp arthur f searing carl o carlson john m orr syracuse on april 9 first game to be played with eight games the freshman baseball squad at the present time is handi capped in their practice by the lack of field room with both the upper and lower fields occu pied daily by varsity baseball football and lacrosse teams it forces coach petrikin to put his men through their preliminary ' work-outs on the gym floor there has been no chance as yet to size up the infield and outfield candidates and for that reason nothing can be determin ed in the way of the team's strength the battery men are working out daily by pitching and catching in the gym and by all predictions should be the strongest department of the team the majority of the fifty can didates that answered the call have had baseball experience in preparatory schools and with the past coaching they have re ceived will make it far easier for the freshman coaches to whip them into shape the main features of the present coach ing is corrections in the manner of hitting and catching with a schedule of twelve im portant games ahead of them every effort is being made to create a plan that will enable them to have outside practice a few of the fielders have manag ed to work out occasionally with the varsity but this will be prohibited later in the season professor stocker speaks on time natators conclude successful season the orientation lectures on friday consisted of specializa tion talks in the different de partments of the university the freshmen were divided in to three groups namely engin eers arts students and busi ness students and each of these groups received information as to the value of their roster and the ways in which they might best profit from it professor palmer head of the b a department lectured the arts students concerning the worth of the general nature of their course he emphasized the fact that their course real ly gave them a smattering of many subjects but that it spe cialized in the study of such cul tural subjects as the various languages the study of for eign languages gives a student a better acquaintance with eng lish and enables him to use his own language more fluently professor palmer stated that in the next few years he expected to lay especial stress on the eng lish department so that in the near future that department shall be on a par with the best colleges of the east bhe business students heard a most interesting talk by dr carothers who accounted for the rapid increase in popularity of the business departments in the leading universities it has been only recently that such de partments have been installed in many colleges and the sud con on page 4 col 3 five victories one defeat and a second place in the intercollegiates two champions delivers interesting lecture to thursday evening club last week address non-technical after a week of exciting con tests against time in the intra mural swimming meet the final point score has been summed up by coach gulick and shows the men in order of credit for the total number of events in which they entered the final score was points pilot 592 travis 581 riker „ 580 harmon 577 wynn 564 freeman 507 hobbs 419 pennington 396 leader 305 verrilli 261 dykes 210 the results of each event were : 50-yard swim won by har mon ; travis and riker tied for second time 26 sec 100 yard back-stroke won by travis ; 2nd wynn 3rd leader time 1:15 3-5 this breaks the former pool record by 1 3-5 200 yard swim won by har mon 2nd riker 3rd travis 100 yard swim won by har mon wynn and riker tied for second diving won by astarita 2nd hobbs 3rd hayes 100 yard breast-stroke won by pilot 2nd leader 3rd tra vis time 1:20 1-5 life saving won by pilot 2nd riker ; 3rd freeman time 40 seconds con on page 4 col 2 much interest was shown during the entire week by those participating and other inter ested students and the fact that cinder artists hard at work a great deal of keen interest has been shown in the early spring football practice being held on taylor field and with such a large number of students out daily coach wendell is as sured of being able to pick a suitable team for next year's battles about seventy-five can didates have been showing up regularly for practice and un der the guidance of coach wen dell and his assistants are grad ually being rounded into form coach tate has been coaching the line-men giving them detail ed practice in real test this week end in interclass meet r 0 t c postpones military game many veterans out hear interesting lecture on composition of the earth competition with lafayette scheduled for last wed nesday to be held this week were guests at supper five men on each side everything is progressing in such fine shape that russian around will be the greatest success the mustard and cheese club has ever put across just one look at the cast rehearsing or the chorus tripping the light fantastic will be enough to con vince anyone that tickets will almost be as scarce as the le high-lafayette football paste boards rehearsals for the cast and chorus are being held daily un der the special tutelage of mr callan of new york fame well he deserves this fame for he has put on many snappy and suc cessful shows besides being well versed in the mechanical and producing sides of the stage mr callan is possessed of a win ning personality one which tends to influence his charges to unilimted efforts in their work of preparing for the production after looking over the princi pals and chorus coach callan was so well pleased he assured the club that russian around would lack absolutely nothing that goes in the making of a real musical comedy in fact the coach has entered in such fine spirit that noticeable results have already been seen in the daily preperation for the big show already scenery is being de signed and painted by philadel phia and new york production firms contracts for the cos tuming of the show have been let and when one thinks of those cute little girls in swiss costumes one can't help but wish the show was tonight during the past fewweeks the cast has been rehearsing the first act until now they have it down pat with the chorus daily practicing their song and dance hits the coach will soon be able to put the show through without a hitch then it will only be a matter of adding per haps a little local color and per fecting small details all the music and lyrics have been composed and writen by lehigh students and is now in con on page 4 col 2 correction the brown and white nata tors have just concluded one of the most successful seasons in the annals of swimming at le high five victories one de feat and second place in the in tercollegiates tell the tale the outstanding performers of the season were astarita and tra vis intercollegiate champions and also raleigh and harmon who was the high scorer of the team con on page 4 col 3 the season started with a meet in which the freshman team opposed the varsity the varsity won easily though they were handicapped by the ab sence of several star perfor mers the first intercollegiate meet was with new york uni versity the lehigh natators easily conquered n y u who received but a single first place george washington university was the next conquest they were also permitted to garner one first place against catholic university the swimming team rose to great heights and captured every first place to win their first league meet rutgers lacrosse practice is now in full swing with a large squad of men out every day under coach o'neil's supervision most of last year's men are struggling hard for places the team will not be picked how ever until shortly before the first game a change has been made in the schedule by the cancelling of the game with yale which was to have taken place april 9 efforts are being made to substitute for this dropped game so that the team will have more practice before meet ing syracuse on the 15th all indications point to a successful season syracuse the first on the list should prove difficult the next game with stevens promises to be a hard fight last year the latter won 6-5 after a long and hard fought battle the odds are cer tainly even for this year johns hopkins will certainly have a strong team this year since they were last year's champions the game at that time with lehigh was a fierce one but the brown and white was able to score only one point to the other's nine con on page 4 col 2 the university of maryland will give a good contest but if the teams remain as they were last year lehigh should win the score of the previous sea son was 3-0 in lehigh's favor the military game between lehigh university and lafay ette college r o t c officers scheduled to have been held last wednesday afternoon at lafay ette has been postponed until thursday because of the death of a relative of capt r h chance of the lehigh r 0 t c in springfield ohio the relative was dr lind a brother in-law ' in the military department of fices at lafayette only five-men the war game consists of the working out of map prob lems each r o t c to enter five men the work will be done con on page 4 col 1 there was an omission in the list of men elected to phi beta kappa published in these columns last tuesday ralph " arthur lambert e m 25 was elected at the same time as the other stu dents listed but his name was omitted through an error track prospects look bright for lehigh this season more than 150 men are out for track and more will probably be re cruited soon from the swim ming and football squads the training has begun three weeks ahead of schedule and with the early start and the large num ber who have turned out the outlook is most promising in order to better classify the men and test their abilities on the cinder-path coach kanaly has arranged an interclass meet for april 4 each class will then have a chance to match its runners in an actual meet before the first outside meet of the sea son this is scheduled to be held at swarthmore on satur day april 18 con on page 4 col 4 all entrants for the interclass meet will sign up this week due to various class trips this week many upperclass candidates will not compete this makes it look rosy for the freshmen to win as they will have all their best about forty professors and students journeyed to easton last friday to attend a meeting held under the auspices of the gayley chemical society of la fayette dr gerald wendt dean of chemistry and physics at perm state college gave an interest ing talk on of what is the earth composed his speech was very well illustrated by slides and a reel of film furnish ed by ithe general electric com pany the men then went from par dee auditorium where the meeting was held to brainard hall where they were guests of the gayley chemical society at a social hour during which re freshments were served most of the men stayed over con on page 4 col 4 the speaker at the regular meeting of the thursday eve ning club held in the central moravian sunday school build ing was professor john e stocker who gave the members a clear idea of how time is mea sured his subject being the astronomical measurement of time he was presented to his audience by dr c n wyant president of the club professor stocker opened his lecture by saying thait time is measured by the rotation of the earth on its axis and its relation to the sun which body appar ently is rotating he followed the changes in time measurement in efforts to make it exact describing the sidereal day determined by the position of stars the civil day which begins at midnight while the astronomer's day begins at noon on january 1 1925 as tronomers made the astronomi cal day agree with the civil day which simplify the measure ment of time the solar day con on page 4 col 5 sidereal clocks in observato ries were described and the scronograph which astronomi cal time is regulated to the fif tieth of a second transmitting notice brown and white
