intermural meet held at lehigh lehigh matmen given dinner alexander potter 90 delivers interesting lecture to civils faculty members entertained by tau beta pi at smoker wrestlers entertained by r a lewis at spring valley hotel finishing touch to successful swimming season willis awarded cup travis in lead alexander potter c e le high a very successful con sulting engineer of new york city gave an interesting and in structive talk at the recent meeting of the civil engineer ing society mr potter has made a specialty of the design of entire sewerage systems and hence presented many valuable facts pertaining to the design of sewerage systems and sewage disposal an interesting part of mr potter's talk was the descrip tion of a very efficient method of laying sewer pipe in quick sand in this method a steel caisson in three ten-foot sec tions is lowered into the sewer trench each section is of con struction similar to that of a tunnel shield after each ten foot of sewer pipe is laid and backfill completed for that sec tion the entire caisson is moved forward twelve men can lay one hundred and twenty feet of sewer pipe a day using this me thod which mr potter said is the best means he has thus far seen for laying sewer pipe in con on page 4 col 4 unanimous elected at din ner at spring valley hotel 2 bayles in behalf of the home team 3 the hand is quicker than the eye 4 mr wannemaker at the piano mr marr performed some very mystifying and grati fying tricks before the eyes of the faculty and fooled them as a very successful smoker giv en by the tau beta pi society for the faculty of lehigh took place in drown hall wed nesday evening both factions having an excellent representa tion at the affair davis 25 was in charge of arrangements and was assisted by his commit tee headed by bell 26 festi vities commenced at 8 30 amid a burst of song small printed programs in brown and white listed the events of the evening which ran as follows 1 vocal exercise spring football well under way baldwin grooming baseball charges tennis prospects appear very bright crosse wielders to form class teams coach wendell to have tate liberty high coach as assistant practice held in gym until courts are in condition sophomore - freshman and junior-senior games on tuesday and wednesday material at hand indicates successful season for sluggers sixty men report forty men out first game in april captains chosen this week is being devoted by the pool authorities to an in termural swimming meet the events are being run off each af ternoon and at the present time several have been completed the men after finishing a fairly successful season are showing good form and one pool record has been broken two events were run off monday afternoon in the fifty yard swim harmon had little difficulty in winning 100 points for his class while travis and riker were tie for feecond place this event was won in the fast time of 26 sec onds the hundred yard back stroke was then run off in this event travis won in the rec ord-breaking time of one minute fifteen and four-fifths seconds wynn trailed at a considerable distance for second place and leader took third the two hundred and twenty yard swim was held on tuesday afternoon harmon won the swim in two minutes thirty-nine and four fifths seconds while riker and travis took second and third places respectively this left four events to be run off on thursday afternoon two con tests were held these were the hundred yard swim and the fancy dives later in the week the remaining events namely the hundred yard breast-stroke and the life-saving contest will be held this latter event will consist of diving for an object and then swimming two lengths of the pool with it coach gul ick and the managers have been working hard to make this an annual event and close competi con on page 4 col 1 after weeks of strenuous train ing and competition concluded for the lehigh university mat men a highly appreciative clim ax to the season of dual meets and intercollegiates took place monday eve at the spring val ley hotel when the athletes who did it well proved quite profi cient in winning championships and cleaning up the festive board everyone was a cham pion on the night's display the occasion was the annual dinner to the lehigh university wrestlers at which r a lewis an enthusiastic advocate of the mat sport was host wrestlers turned out enmasse in accep tance to the invitation and sev eral hours of joviality was en joyed at the popular spring val ley hostelry for several years it has been the custom of mr lewis to en tertain wrestlers and this year as host had the pleasure of see ing among the lehigh univer sity varsity a son dick who aspired to a first team berth and by diligent appliance to the sport realized his ambition and was one of a team of seven to represent lehigh in the inter collegiates con on page 3 col 2 both varsity and frosh were included among the guests and assembled at taylor gymnasium at six o'clock from where they were conveyed to the scene of the festive occasion in automo biles spring valley hotel is known for its excellent feasts and last monday eve's diner was no exception to the usual run once seated the bantam and featherweights did about as successful in winning the on ly individual championship for lehigh university in the inter collegiate wrestling title events held in new york city last week-end ralph w best of al lentown the 125-lb varsity can didate has been honored with the captaincy of the brown and white grapplers for the season 1926 the election was made monday evening when the wrestlers were guests of r a lewis at a dinner served at the spring valley hotel and was unanimous the lehigh wrestling captain elect is a junior in the electrical engineering course and a mem ber of the sigma phi epsilon fraternity he will complete his wrestling in collegiate cir cles next year although a mem ber of the wrestling squad since matriculating at lehigh best did not succeed to a permanent varsity position until this sea son when in spite of keen oppo sition he had little trouble in winning the varsity assignment in all the dual meets last sea son he wrestled on the varsity in two meets besides wrestling the lehigh featherweight is an ardent fol lower of track and field sports lehigh professors give lecture tours musical clubs set for home concert con on page 4 col 5 may and november are vic ing for the supremacy of tay lor stadium at one end of the field coach jim baldwin is sending his baseball team thru their paces while at the other next season's football is under going it's stage of development under the tutelage of coach percy wendell and his assis tants sitting up in the stad ium and watching the future brown and white team going through the rudimentary paces it does not require much of a stretch of imagination to think that is one of the opening days of college freshmen running to appease the needs of the coaches and men without carry ing with them their familiar lost air and a crack of the bat from the lower end of the field as the outfielders recced brings one back to the fact that it is really spring since monday the upper end of the field has.been a place of intense work about sixty men answered the call before the with the opening of the 1925 varsity baseball season a little less than two weeks off coach baldwin is putting his men thru strenuous practices every day last saturday afternoon the first nine inning game of the sea son was played between the reg ularg and scrubs with the vet erans on the long end of a 10-3 score monday a short snappy practice session was held but on tuesday another five inning game was played which result ed in a second straight win for the regulars the warm weather is grad ually becoming a reality and now the pitchers are beginning to try a few hooks on the ball although it is still too early to predict the hurlers for the com ing campaign it seems that captain adams dußois and walker will take regular turns on the mound while dietrich weston and wilkinson will no doubt be held in reserve - the infield will probably con sist of prior rice mell on the bases and ambler covering con on page 4 col 3 concert to be held in south side high school — careful plans made chem dept sends two pro fessors with apparatus to high schools board of control of athletics will not grant any money for this proposed fresh man squad it will be impossible for such a team to represent the college in trips to outside schools due to the lack of funds it is planned however to obtain meets with nearby schools three cities visited this year bill o'neil vet eran coach of the brown and white lacrosse team is plan ning to put a much more elab orate plan of training for his crosse wielders beginning this week he is ging to form four teams composed of men from the respective classes these will not necessarily be the men who are not on a varsity squad for it has been his policy to in clude everyone on the squad throughout the year but will be the most efficient out in the va rious groups the captains chos en are s s groner h w rob inson h o nutting and m w robinson of the senior junior sophomore and freshman teams respectively con on page 4 col 2 however as yet the two low er classes are incompletely rep resented on the field and it is urged that any man who is at all interested come out and give the teams his help according to graduate manager petriken there is so little interest shown in the freshman team that it will be banquet to feature program nine chapters present junior b a course revised drill hour changed from wednesday to monday progress for arcadia the final date for the home concert of the lehigh musical clubs has now been set for sat urday april 18th the con cert will be held in the south side high school and will be gin at eight o'clock the reason for the concert beginning at this early hour is for the purpose of having it over in time for those present to go to the fresh man dance which will be given in drown hall mr a i mchose has been working diligently with the combined clubs and from all chancial engineering labora tory about last september a new 30 h p sprague electric dynamometer arrived which is now installed in the gas en gine laboratory this machine is nothing more than a dynamo with the field housing on trun ions through a system of lev ers the torque action which tends to rotate the field is transmitted to scales the scales measuring the force of the tor que as the torque or moment tending to rotate the field is equal to that which rotates the armature and knowing the speed of rotation of the arma ture it is a simple matter to calculate the horsepower this holds true whether the machine acts as a motor or as a genera tor • con on page 4 col 4 today and tomorrow the provincial conference for the third province of the delta up silon fraternity is being held at the hotel bethlehem there are twenty-seven delegates at tending this conference the re presentatives being from the following chapters rutgers new york univ columbia perm state lafayette swarth more university of pennsylva nia virginia and lehigh the plans of the convention consist of a business meeting this morning and afternoon a dance at the hotel bethlthem tonight a final business meet the lehigh university lib rary is exhibiting a few of its large signed etchings which will repay the lovers of etchings in bethlehem for a trip to the university library just to see them there are only six of them on exhibition due to their large size and to the lack of ex hibition space but these six are by well-known american etch ers most of them known inter nationally stephen parrish has fre quently exhibited in europe and america and his etchings are con on page 4 col 3 con on page 4 col 3 at a special meeting of the faculty on monday there was an important ruling adopted relative to the junior year in the b a course the substance of this ruling is as follows : during the first term of the ju nior year each student in the college of arts and science must elect some sequence of studies as his major field a major consists of at least twelve term hours of advanced work in the field chosen majors must be approved by the head of the in conjunction with the gen eral program of advertising le high which has been inaugurat ed during the past year under the directorship of professor hughes professors long and chamberlin of the department of chemistry have made an ex tensive lecture trip the last week-end into new jersey and eastern pennsylvania they visited three cities and spoke to large and enthusiastic audienc es in each one con on page 4 col 1 the high-schools at
