mustard and cheese makes big progress vol xxxii no 43 lehigh natators close season with second place in intercollegiates lehigh wrestling team captures third place in intercollegiates selected by students men to serve in senior years although nosed out of second place by one point lehigh makes strong bid for title at new york meet rutgers retains championship for fourth consecutive year with 47 points lehigh second with 27 swarthmore third plans made to take show to wilkes-barre and phil adelphia great help from alumni best crowns season with championship bayles speaks prof lambert to be eugolized prof j b reynolds will speak at memorial meet ing of phila club speaker well qualified the lehigh wrestling team concluded a fairly successful season by garnering third place honors at the intercollegiates at columbia last friday and sat urday perm state was first with 24 points yale was sec ond with 14 nosing out lehigh by one point perm columbia princeton cornell and syracuse finished in the order named state was practically conced ed the championship before the start of the meet but it was not expected to win by such a large margin yale and lehigh were thought to be fairly close contes captain astarita and travis champions foster however beat his team mate out in the finals while kane of swarthmore and free man of lehigh finished third and fourth respectively yon stanley was not quite up to his usual form in the plunge but he did not experience any difficulty in winning first place for rutgers with a mark of sev enty-four feet best of swarth more took second place timen of lehigh hird and dunn of rut gers fourth travis lehigh came in first con on page 4 col 1 pi delta epsilon holds initiation sophomore cabinet formed at smoker final plans for editorial com petition by fraternity outlined plan to send delegates to nearby prep schools to talk on lehigh prizes offered members elected the lehigh swimming team left weightman hall univer sity of pennsylvania with two intercollegiate champions in their midst these two kien are captain astarita who won the diving contest and travis win ner of the backstroke rutgers was the high scorer of the meet with forty-seven points and le high took second place by amas sing twenty-seven points the only record broken was the 200 yard breast stroke mark which brown of rutgers smashed by a fifth of a second the relay race soon develop ed into a struggle between le high and rutgers raleigh the lead-off man beat his opponent by a half yard in the first lap pilot and travis held their own against the rutgers entries but foster the rutgers anchor man came through with a burst of speed which landed him a half foot in front of harmon the swarthmore team took third place captain astarita won the fancy diving contest from a large and competent field hayes of lehigh and thompson of swarthmore waged a close fight for second honors but the latter won lymon of george wash ington university took fourth place rossetti and foster of rutgers both won their respec tive heats in the fifty-yard dash tants as the results show the two greatest upsets of the meet ocurred when tuttle of yale defeated levitz in the final of the heavyweight class and when brennan of columbia fail ed to place in the 135-lb class otherwise the results of the va rious bouts were usually what was expected the two fast and most thril ling bouts of the meet were be tween brennan and liggett in the finals of the 135-lb class and between brennan and lewis of lehigh in deciding the second place for the same class in his first bout reed drew cary of state the present cham pion and though he put up a wonderful fight he was unable to overcome the advantage in ex perience which the state man possessed heister of perm also proved to be too much for the game lehigh 115-lb grappler again reed showed wonderful fighting spirit but went down before greater experience in the battle for third place reed just could not be stopped after a hard fast struggle he threw arida of columbia and clinched that place for the brown ar.d white until he met lehman of state in the final of the 125-lb class best had little difficulty with his opponents in lehman how ever he met a wrestler nearly his equal this bout was one of the fastest of the meet best continued on page three the mustard and cheese club has practically completed all ar rangements for the extensive trip which this year's show will make jimmie morris who is in charge of the club's visits to other cities has been in touch with various alumni clubs and is receiving much help from them a great deal of credit is due the alumni for the enthu siastic support which they are giving the show in wilkes-barre the proposed visit of the mustard and cheese was the feature topic of the last alumni meeting about twe weeks ago it will be of inter est to all lehigh men to know hat the first mustard and cheese production was present ed in wilkes-barre in 1885 the club has been there only twice since hat time so the alumni are particularly anxious to see this year's excellent show con on page 4 col 4 at this dinner there were for ty-one lehigh alumni and all of them seemed willing to help the club in any possible way okey spoke on the prospects for the success of russian around while jimmie morris talked of the business end of the var ious trips both speakers were very enthusiastcally applaunded and aroused much interest af ter some favorable comments from the wilkes-barre men the necessary contracts were closed and the date set for the presen tation mr jacobosky is manag chem meet hears prof thomas speak at the regular college meet ing held last friday the most im portant feature of the meeting was the election of the manag ers of football and soccer mr bayle announced that the nom inee obtaining the highest num ber of votes would become man ager the second highest the managership of the freshman team and the third would be come the assistant manager of the freshman team the men nominated by the board of control of athletics were in football n r castor h t martindale and e b ar nold in soccer the men nomin ated were l n ulmer c e gessner and c s ames mr e b arnold was elected manager of football in his sen ior year and mr h t martin dale the manager of the fresh man team mr n r castor was elected the assistant man ager of the freshman team in soccer mr c s ames was elect ed manager and mr l n ul mer was elected to the assistant managership of the freshman team president bayles cautioned the men in respect to lecturers at the regular college lectures he appealed to all the men to give a fair deal to the visiting lecturers and refrain from talk ing mr bayles also cautioned the men in regard to walking on the grass a new seating initiation of w m metten and w g fullard into the so ciety w b wardell who was pledged several weeks ago with the others was unable to be present at the initiation and he will be taken in at the next reg ular meeting which will be in about two weeks the fratewiity announces the holding of an essay contest open to all students in the univer sity the essays are to be on any college activity and some suggestions from the fraternity are an improvement in the methods of election college spir it improvement of intercolle giate relationships a remedy for compulsory chapel a com parison made of the value of cultural and technical courses and the drinking question of le high the judges of the competi tion are mr victor dykes mr leslie wolcott and mr rus about sixty sophomores were present at the sophomore smok er in drown hall friday eve ning called by the president of the class in an effort to inaugur ate a sophomore cabinet at le high music was furnished by members of the musical club and following this the president took the floor and came right to the point by explaining the pur pose of the smoker and present ed the plan drawn up for a soph omore cabinet mr trafford al so spoke outlining the activities of the freshman cabinet and explaining just how this body functions the plan was en thusiastically adopted by the class and much discussion took place the election for members of the cabinet was in order and candidates were nominated and voted upon at once in order to distribute responsibility thru out as many members of the class as possible class officers were declared ineligible it was also decided that half the mem bers should be fraternity men the other half nonfraernity con on page 4 col 2 tau betes to stage huge faculty smoker phi beta kappa of lehigh honors nine men the members of the tau beta pi honorary engineering fraternity will tender a huge smojcer to the members of the lehigh faculty tomorrow eve ning in drown hall the acti vities of the evening are sched uled to begin at eight o'clock the entertainment committee has worked diligently to make this affair a scintillating success in every way they have spar ed no pains in hiring the best of entertainers several specialty acts are some of the features of con on page 4 col 5 the meeting of the chemical society last thursday was of special interest to both chemists and laymen the subject blood chemistry is one in which ev eryone is interested if not in formed of and the speaker pro fessor thomas has the ability of presenting his subject in a most lucid and comprehensible form con on page 4 col 2 prof thomas first gave a gen eral description of the life flu id outlining its composition function quantity and char acteristics the^number for in stance of the red corpusetes which carry the oxygen to the tissues is in the neighborhood of five billion per cubic centi meter since there are four liters of blood in the body a simple calculation will show the enormous number of these par ticles the amount of certain sub stances in the blood is as most people know indicative of cer tain diseases thus an excess of sugar shows the presence of diabetes of urea bright's dis ease and of uric acid rheuma tism it is the detection and de termination of these substances last friday evening in drown hall the faculty club held the third of it's dances of the college year the original social program of the club call ed for a series of five dances,4he third of which was scheduled for the early part of february at that time however the weather was so inclement that it was decided to postpone the dance until last friday the lehigh melodians a stu dent orchestra furnished excel lent dance music and delicious refreshments were served about seventy-five couples com posed of members of the facul ty and their families were pres ent the dance committee provid ed for unusual entertainment with many novelties and every one was emphatic in saying that the dance was the best that ha 3 been held this year it's suc cess was so great that the mem bers of the committee are con sidering the holding of another dance much like this last one in the near future the social program calls for two more dances this term and the com mittee wish to make them even more enjoyable than the one of friday evening the philadelphia lehigh club is going to hold a memorial meeting in honor of the late professor preston a lambert 83 next friday march 27 pro fessor lambert's life will be eu logized by jos b reynolds 07 professor of mathematics whose close friendship with the late head of the department makes him very well fitted to discuss the life of a man so loved and respected by all professor lambert his life and his work will be the title of prof reynold's enconium in which he will try to portray an intimate picture of the class room and personal everyday work of his late colleague al most all the alumni who will attend the meeting were ac quainted with professor lam bert and a great many were students under his leadership and many old familiarities will be recalled in his oration prof reynolds will in addition to other things discuss professor lambert's re search work papers which he had written and which were la ter published by the american philosophical society books of wnich he was the author his teachings in history and some of his peculiar characteristics as a teacher among the great things that professor lambert did for lehigh ' was his work and interest devoted to the le high alumni society and the i subsequent growth of that body in its entirety professor reynolds will try to make his eulogy an intimate talk on the life and character of one who was both revered and esteemed by all sons of lehigh preston a lambert the alexander hamilton club wh»h was recently organ ized presented to lehigh last friday one of the eminent am erican historians dr w e dodd of the university of chi cago dr dodd is famous both as a writer and speaker and his subject abraham lincoln and some critical episodes of the civil war was no less inter esting than the speaker himself everyone of course knows the broad facts of that great presi dent's life his ideals and his ac complishments but only a few who have made an exhaustive study of lincoln know the true story of his struggles in the presidency and his diplomatic victory over england which re ally won the war for the north and saved the union the first part of the lecture dealt mainly with a character ization of lincoln and with the peculiar chain of circumstances leading up to his election dr dodd gave an intimate personal glimpse of each of the oustand the subject of modern pow er plant operation was dis cussed in a lecture given by mr n g reinicker of the pennsyl vania power and light com pany before a group of profes sors and seniors in the mechan ical engineering department the lecture was in charge of professor larkin mr reinicker demonstrated the operation of various plants and illustrated with slides the exchange and switching phases of each plant the two largest plants now in operation in this vicinty are the harwood and hauto stations located at the mouths of the coal mines the speaker stressed the organiza tion feature of the pennsylvania light and power company's system with its center of con trol located at hazleton pa from this center there are sev eral men in absolute control of the whole system directing the work of each branch engineer thus insuring a unified method and thereby decreasing acci dents and increasing efficiency one of the greatest factors editor-in-chief as sistant editors and new mem bers of the board will take place at this time in a talk to the lacrosse men friday afternoon coach o'neill revealed his plans for the coming season he divid ed the men according to their class each class is to form a team and after a week or two of practice play against each other all of the classes except the sophomores have sufficient men out to form a team it is urged that every man interested in lacrosse come out and take part'in the formation of the teams this week keep off the grass don't feed the animals
