the united states government has opened a school at fortress monroe for the purpose of training electricians for the army a party consisting of professors merriman thornburg and frank lin left here on saturday morning for ahoskie north carolina where the eclipse of the sun was observed they state that during the entire eclipse the weather was perfect the mysterious shadow bands were observed about one minute before and one minute after totality the sky during totality was not as dark as usual due probably to atmos pheric conditions the corona ex tended 2,500,000 miles on each side of the sun along the plane of the ecliptic sketches were made of the corona which was a delicate pea green shading to white and resembled an immense arrow across the sun with the head pointing downward to the east owing to errors in the lunar tables used as the basis of prediction the eclipse was three seconds late the party had a very successful trip and returned to south bethle hem on tuesday evening the students of lehigh in par ticular and the people of the beth lehems in general had an oppor tunity yesterday of seeing a baseball game between the team of a large college and the team of a small college and although the small college lost the above score will show how closely the game was contested decoration day and fine weather drew a large number of spectators to the game and they were treated to as fine an exhibition of ball playing as has been seen in bethlehem for several years both pitchers did excellent work and the visitors put up a perfect game in the field lehigh's errors may appear rather numerous but every one with the single exception of kelly's muffin the second inning was partly excusable lehigh's best playing was done by hollings worth and james while gawthrop and orbin carried off the honors for pennsylvania the feature of the game was the splendid running catch by gawthrop of parson's long fly to right field in the eighth a detailed account of the game follows : first inning collier hit an easy fly to sellers huston knocked a scratch hit past hollingsworth but was caught napping at first orbin singled and flavell went out at first for lehigh pomeroy and hollingsworth flied out to catcher and shortstop respectively and james went down at first in the second jones and gaw throp singled and brown knocked a long fly to kelly which he dropped filling the bases white hit a fast grounder to pomeroy who fielded it home forcing out jones and lilley threw out gawthrop at third making a beautiful double play layton walked again filling the bases and collier flied out to james lehigh went down in order third inning huston and orbin went out at first flavell got a base on balls and jones retired the side with a grounder to alder parsons singled kelly struck out in trying for a sacrifice sellers flied out to white and pomeroy went down at first gawthrop opened the fourth with a long fly to barton which was nicely handled brown was thrown out at first and white struck out e g grace 99 captain of last year's baseball team was on the athletic field tuesday afternoon and pitched an inning against the scrub for lehigh hollingsworth put a two-bagger against the right field fence james sacrificed and lilley hit one to white who by a beauti ful throw caught hollingsworth at the plate fifth inning layton went out at first collier flied of that year symington is a player of great experience he having learned the game before he came to lehigh and has played on the varsity for two years this season as first at tack and last season as
