lehigh university south bethlehem pa wednesday june 20 1900 no 63 university week vol vii university sunday watched hundreds in your place she is hungry and tired men have come to her with words of authority and command and she has yielded but gained nothing save servitude they have thought of making her serve them — they have said and done little to serve her the business world the profes sions the arts and sciences — they invite you can you interpret aright their invitation is it that you may climb to celebrity that the wounds and the wrongs of men exist ? is it that you may amass wealth that the economic relations of men have been established is it that a crown may decorate your brow that the arts utter their en 1 ticing cries and bid you pursue them in your coy delights if so serve you oh world !" moral re forms demand to-day as never before the keenest of inteiligence and the highest of balance help ! ful truth needs to-day the calmest of servants the trustiest adherents go with your enthusiasm to be blessings to men strike with your athletic force and your drilled judg ment strike at evils and lift up the fallen forces of righteousness make the cities and the states the towns and the villages whither you go know that a man has come to suffer and battle to comfort and to cheer make the poor and the ignorant bless you by your adher ence to forlorn causes make the boss and the demagogue fear you by your fearless exposures make the sun to shine more clearly by men of convictions yet humble of loyalty yet unaffected power is of no merit unless it comes from god and is wielded for him ser vice is twice blest and makes the world rejoice university day an unusually large audience consisting of alumni and friends of the graduates was present at the thirty-second annual commence ment in the chapel this morning the exercises began with a musical selection followed by prayer music preceeded the salu tatory oration the constitution and its friends which was given by george william barager of the exercises of university week were impressively opened on sun day morning at 1 1 o'clock with baccalaureate services in the chapel the rev floyd w tomkins s t d rector of the church of the holy trinity of philadelphia preached the baccalaureate sermon from the texts all this power will i give thee — st luke 4 : 6 i am among you as he that serve etc — st luke 12 27 under the direction hazleton pa the selection by the choir was followed by an oration engineer of character delivered by john fuller of quarry ville n j nimson eckert of allentown pa spoke upon the meaning of ' united states " following this came the oration " the en gineer as a factor in civilization by jos stauffer shul t z of washington boro pa after a selection by the choir frederick l grammer b s e.m class of 1889 was introduced as the alumni orator the subject of the alumni address was " ten years later the valedictory oration of mr j.fred wolle the university choir rendered very effi ciently the several hymns which proved to be an exceptionally pleasing part of the program the g r a d v a t i ng class entered the chapel in a body robed in the custom ary caps and gowns and took their seats for the last time as a class in those allot ted to the seniors the chapel was filled to overflowing with friends and relatives 0f the seniors under graduates and towns after dwelling on man's love for power and the evil influences which this love exerts on his character dr tomkins pointed out the way to find the remedy for this evil in a very forc ible manner at the end of the sermon dr tompkins addressed the graduat ing class as follows : — brethren of the graduating class i have taken this lesson for to-day designedly i know well how your fresh impulses to-day as you stand on the threshold and look out at the open way are beating as they ought to beat with enthusias tic desire now comes the time for active work you cry now comes the coveted long-waited-for opportunity to succeed to gain adherents to make progress to rule — this now is my part ? but will you not stop a moment and think ? the world is waiting for you as she has waited for and a century of science was given by louis ort ner of drifton pa after review ing the scientific triumphs of a hundred years he concluded with a touching farewell to his class the choir rendered another se lection when dr drown announc ed the awards the conferring of degrees was followed by the presi dent's address to the graduating class he said in part : — the few words which it is my privilege to speak to you in this last hour of your college life are naturally words of cheer and con gratulation on the successful com pletion of your college course to the degrees to which i have ad mitted you and to the formal words of the diplomas which i have put into your hands whereby lehigh university places upon you your sweeping away cobwebs and mists from befogged humanity show men what an educated chris tian hero of modern birth in modern lands is like and let the grandeur of the end you seek be the inspira tion to force you when you have a single-handed contest to carry on oh my friends prove to doubters that educated men are not lords but servants prove to grumblers that not over-education but over weaning self-conceit is the enemy to social peace let men know that all theories have a loving prac tice and that the heart of knowl edge is true to god and to right be braye — for life is struggle and lonely at times be religious with a simple normal religion loving god and man at once be sympa thetic with all classes for the hearts of men are hungry be true for the earth is tired of charlatans and hypocrites andj she wants honest then the old cry power power is your graduating cheer and the world must find new chains instead of glad freedom why are you to live ? why are you to go out to face the ways and the needs ? surely surely under the surface exhiliration there is a deep response to the human calls and to the groaning creatio;i i can not be lieve that you will care for honor if it comes for your seeking while hearts die for want of sympathy i can not believe tbat these halls have fitted you only to assume command over forces which want not so much a leader as a minister a server let power go it amounts to little and soon mocks decaying faculties let honor lie aside ; it sickens as you grow older and find how little there is in it take a braver look and a nobler theme for life and make the world rejoice as you cry i have come to ooiveiiv^esn^oenmnenkrt edition the brown and white senior class
