vol xxxii no 38 baseball squad begins practice great demand for lehigh lecturers price five cents life saving course to be given by coach gulick interesting meeting of board of control ah important f'reparatory and high schools being visited by lecturers hectic finish mars otherwise brilliant compaigning life saving university to give diploma for deals at some length with radio technicalities and intricacies coach baldwin's first call draws letter men to indoor workout schedules filled split with maroon difficult schedule speech extemporaneous grapplers primed for m i t matmen brown and white men favor ites by better showing against yale final home meet the lehigh board of control met at drown hall wednesday and at that session they ratified three schedules and elected two managers for next year action on both the stadium plan and an additional basketball game with lafayette was deferred un til the next meeting of the board on monday the freshman baseball sche dule was ratified along with the freshman and varsity football schedules for the coming year s l huyette was elected man ager of wrestling for next year p e roberts was selected at manager of basketball intra-mural swim meet arranged the red cross life saving course which proved to be a great success under captain bell's supervision last year will again be given coach gulich of the swimming team has an nounced that he will give these tests to any man who prdfesses a desire for taking them the course will start shortly after the conclusion of the var sity swimming season on the twenty-first of this month in addition to the red cross tests there will be a number of oth ers for those students who are interested chief among these is the camp directors test furthermore lehigh university will award a diploma for life saving all those who are in terested can see mr gulick any afternoon at the gym regular faculty meeting held seats to be assigned in chap el freshman curriclua to be regulated innovation of coach gulick to be introduced this month many entrants expected next meeting march 11 of lehigh's basketball season remains but a memory and a rather pleasing memory because the greater part of the games were successful home games the opening of the sea son was played december 10 with moravian college team the game was well played and thrilling in all departments but lehigh completely outclassed the moravians as could be ob served by the overwhelming score the second game was played at princeton on the thirteenth at which time the princeton five demonstrated its right to make a bid for the intercolle giate title lack of practice rendered the lehigh offensive rather weak against the strong orange and black defensive the loss of gallagher and hess in the second half tended to de moralize the team but as a whole it played a fighting game to the last whistle the seton hall game played on december 17 was little more than a chance to iron out the de fects of the preceding games and a good stiff scrimmage it was the old fighting com bination of hess smith gallag her weinstein and schaub that led the university of toronto on to defeat to the tune of 48-26 the canadians put up a wonder ful battle but nothing to com pare with the startling improve ment in the floor work of the lehigh five on jan 10 lehigh defeat con on page 4 col 1 at the regular weekly meet ing of the lion's club of beth lehem on tuesday afternoon at the hotel bethlehem prof fry of the department of physics of lehigh university delivered a talk on radio the lecture was illustrated mainly with sketches and orig inal drawings illustrating the different hook-ups etc the be ginning of the talk dealt with the underlying principles of ra dio and prof fry explained very clearly how the waves bearing messages were sent from the transmitting to the re ceiving stations damped and unmaped waves were next tak en up with a diagram showing the difference in form of the wave motion the principle of the vacuum tube was then treated upon by the lecturer by means of a small instrument and an accom panying graph he demonstrat ed the superposition of the mod ulated waves on the carrier waves it is the modulation which being rectified and changed to audio frequency pro duces the message either voice or music by way of an illustration of radio transmission prof fry performed the well known ex periment in physics by which two similar tuning forks are made to vibrate by setting only one of them in motion the other is induced to vibrate by the beats of air set up by the transmitting fork in the case of radio the sending fork coy con on page 4 col 5 varsity track men begin light work with the close of the recent basketball season coach jim baldwin has concentrated his efforts on the baseball squad from the way things look pros pects are that lehigh will be represented by a first-class nine for the hard schedule ahead be ginning last monday last year's squad with the addition of a few new men have been work ing out every day in the gym as yet it is too cold to permit outdoor practice but as soon as the weather gets warmer a gen eral call for candidates will be given and a large turnout is hoped for in spite of the fact that all but one of last year's letter men are back coach baldwin's big problem this year will be to find a first baseman to replace freddy rog ers freddy's graduation left vacant the only position on last year's team and if a man can be found to fill his shoes at the initial sack everything points to a very successful season con on page 4 col 4 prior and captain adams constitute the star battery and unless the former is moved to first base this pair can be coun ted on to baffle the strongest hitting teams lehigh will meet this season other promising candiates for the receiving end are nevins lewin and batz all of whom have seen considerable experience behind the bat in the box with adams will be pete dußois walker and weston dußois and adams bore the brunt of the pitching last year while walker and weston were on hand to relieve them toward the end of the season weston showed up exceedingly well and electricals to hold convention at penn difficult schedule arranged for coach kanaly's men band elects officers for ensuing year successful season expected lehigh to be represented with nine other eastern colleges lehigh has begun a new field of activity in the recently cre ated lecture service for high schools and preparatory schools it has been felt that one of am erica's chief educational needs is to create more intimate con tacts between the high schools and preparatory schools on the one hand and the college or uni versity on the other for the pur pose of dealing more effectively with certain common problems not the least important of which is the clarifying of the point of view of students desiring to en ter college this lecture service is pure ly educational in purpose there are no charges except for the travelling expenses of the lee turer to and from lehigh this free lecture service to high schools and preparatory schools lehigh has established as a part of its greater lehigh program which commits it to a policy of wide public service throughout the country the lectures now available are lessons from the gridiron professor howard r reiter in this day of social re building fred trafford what a chemist does dr james s long the story of steel dr bradley stoughton radio simplified proffesor howard m fry coal and petroleum dr benjamin l miller the passing of the ameri can frontier dr lawrence h gipson a better breed of man pected that the gym will be packed to its fullest capacity by three o'clock saturday after noon the lehigh freshman wrest ling team fresh from its vic tory over the university of pennsylvania yearlings left this morning for a meet with the perm state frosh little is known about the state team but they can be depended on having a well coached team that will force the lehigh freshmen to use all of their knowledge to emerge victorious the team that will represent lehigh is the same one which conquered the perm frosh by the score of twenty-one to ten the team is 115 lb mcgovern 125 lb sparacino 135 lb willis 145 lb seay 158 lb martz 175 lb levitz heavyweight miller the departure of winter has aroused the dormant interest of track enthusiasts at lehigh al ready a few of the brown and white track men can be seen stretching their legs on the campus roads coach kanaly when inter viewed on the subject stated that spring practice would start as soon as the frost was out of the ground he seemed con vinced that the prospective sea son would be one of the best in the history of the university the schedule for varsity track and field meets : april 11 inter-class bethle hem ap r i,l 18 swarthmore swarthmore april 24 perm clays class a mid atlanti c championships philadelphia may 2 lafayette bethlehem may 9 rutgers bethlehem may 16 open considering univ of maryland n y u con on page 4 col 3 at a regular meeting of the faculty held on monday march 2 several affairs of interest to the student body were discussed and passed on it was decided after many suggestions and considerable discussion to assign seats in chapel every student required to attend will be given a seat which he is to occupy through out the remainder of the term this will be done sometime within the next two weeks but no change will be made in the method of checking attendance professor stoughton offered a plan whereby freshmen en rolling in the engineering school should not designate their course until the beginning of the second term the one exception is to be in chemistry and chem ical engineering where german is the language required dur ing the first term talks may be given to the freshmen describ ing the life and work of the men engaged in the various branch es of engineering with this in mind at the end of the first term the student will be better able to judge for what course he is best fitted this plan was ap proved and passed on by the faculty professor hughes gave a statement of the distribution of credit hours required for a summer school certificate six ty hours of which eighteen must be completed at lehigh are required of these eighteen credits must be in education and psychology eighteen must be in a major subject and six must be in english this certificate is chiefly for those desiring to teach it con forms to the standards of the penna state board of educa tion and anyone who has earned it may obtain from the state an other certificate permitting him to teach in pennsylvania what promises to be a most interesting convention of elec trical engineering students will be held monday march 9 1925 at the university of pennsylva nia at that time interested students from engineering schools in the vicinity of phila delphia will gather under the auspices of the american insti tute of electrical engineers the program as planned for the day is quite an elaborate one the morning session calls for the presentation of papers on timely topics by students of haverford lehigh swarth more and lafayette lehigh's representative at this session will be francis j berger e e 25 whose topic will be voltage survey he will deal with the various methods of observing voltage conditions in city dis tribution circuits and the use to con on page 4 col 5 after the regular rehearsal of the band on monday march 2 elections were held for the offi cers who will serve during the coming college year 1925-1926 the results of this election are as follows leader george d long manager k l hoffman librarian h h sampson previous to this the leader of the band has always acted as manager also but beginning with next year these will be two seperate and distinct offices the present officers of the band are leader and manager herbert w palmer librarian george d long these men will continue to serve until the end of this term an innovation at lehigh in the form of an intra-mural swimming meet will be intro duced the first four days of the week of march 23 the purpose of the event will be to decide the all around swimming cham pions of lehigh and anyone in college is eligible the events it has been decided will cover a wide range and it is hoped that a large number will enter there will be two races every day during the four days on monday march 21 the fifty yard dash and the one hundred yard back stroke will take place on tuesday the one hundred yard dash and the dive are sche duled on account of m s & t drill there will be no events on wednesday afternoon on thursday however will come the two-twenty race and the one hundred yard breast stroke race on friday after noon there will be held a life saving event consisting in tow ing a heavyweight up and down the pool the meet will be scored by the percentage system taking the pool record as one hundred per cent the entrants will be graded on their proximity to equaling that record gold silver and bronze medals will be given to the winners of first second and third places respec tively in the whole meet in order to be in a position to give medals for every event a one dollar entrance fee has been decided upon by coach gulick and his assistants this meet should be well patronized com ing as it does in the lull between winter and spring sports brown and white
