field to-morrow at 3p m admis sion 85 cents a course in oratory mr emery offers an optional course in oratory for the remainder of the term — the hour to be fi*eb by those signifying an intentional taking it senior class meeting a meeting of the senior class was hem on wednesday morning of this week the first business of the meeting was the election of four orators from the honor eoll for university day the four follw ing men being chosen j w grace a p steckle l w bailey and j f capriles the matter of class photographs was then brought up and it was decided after some discussion to have the pictures taken by eggert mr converse reported that the class picture would have to be taken immedi ately in order to have it inserted in the epitome so it was decided to have the picture taken on thursday the matter of taking a class ballot similar to the one usually put in the class book was brought up as the epitome board has offered to insert such a ballot in this year's epitome mr con verse was appointed with power to choose his own committee to attend to the preparation of such ballot upon a vote of the class it was decided to pay the remainder of the amount sub cribed last year by the class to the athletic asso ciation and al-o an old bill due to jim myers a banquet com mittee consisting of the following members was appointed by the chair : carman homer morgan p l keed and buckland as a sufficient number of men had not voted for the class day committee the election was postponed until next wednesday a gymnasium exhibition on next saturday evening april 15th the annual gymnasium exhibition will be given and judg ing by the preparations under way it will prove to be a very en joyable affair a full program has not been announced as yet but among other events will be the following dumb bell drill class drills on the long horse parallel bars and high horse and advanced work in tumbling on the horse the parallel bars and the horizontal bar the principal feature of the evening's entertain ment will be the pyramids which were given so successfully last year the price of admission has been fixed at fifty cents and every one is invited «. , during the presidency of dr dwight of yale he has given the university more than 100,000 or twice the amount of his salary electrical engineering society continued on 1 fourth page at the meeting of the e e society thursday evening in the physical laooratory professor franklin delivered a highly inter esting lecture on the compensating ship's compass or binnacle he exhibited an improved type of the modern binnacle and explained its workings in detail professor franklin introduced his remarks by stating that the variation in the earth's magnetic field was a source of much annoy ance to easy navigation and the consequent variation of the ship's compass became a subject for thorough investigation which has gradually led to the construction of the modern binnacle the influence of a ship's magnetism on the compass needle involves the consideration of two distinct items each having its own method of compensation in the first place an iron ship when built occupies a certain posi tion with respect to the earth's field at that particular place if the bow is pointing in the direction of the earth's field the vessel be comes a permanent magnet with its bow as a north pole if the hull is pointing east the side to ward the north becomes the north pole this condition is known to the mariner as the permanent mag netism of the ship distinct from this in effect and manner of com pensation is the varying condition of magnetism due to the position and direction of the ship this second condition is known as the induced magnetism of the vessel considering the snip a perma nent magnet having its head as the north pole lines of force pass out of the north pole and back to the stern of the vessel this produces a rield which tends to make the compass point toward the stern of the ship if the field of the ship is in the direction of the earth's field the compass will point due north but as the ship turns its field turns also and a resultant field is formed whose components are the earth's field and the ship's field the needle will obviously point in the direction of this result ant field thus when the ship pom's north the direction of the resultant field is north and the error of the needle is zero when the ship points east the two fields are at right angles and the error of the needle is at a maximum as the ship turns so that it prints south the error is again zero and when it points west the error is again at a maximum one com plete revolution of the ship gives a series of values from zero to maxi mum then back to zero then to maximum and back to zero which may be plotted in a curve the error determined in this way is called by mariners the " semi-cir cular error of the compass with senior class the election for class day com mittee will be held next wednes day morning and it is hoped that all men who have not yet paid up their dues will do so by that time so that the committee may be elected president tennis there will be a meeting of all those interested in tennis isanfledi ately after the college lecture oa saturday morning a hew years ago lenigh's tennis association was very important and tiiere ks no reason why it cannot fee t^aje placed in this lacrosse with the college of the city of new york game next saturday the lacrosse season will open and we hope it will be as successful as the present condition of the team promises although there is a great defi ciency in weight especially on the attack it is pretty well counter balanced by speed and skill there is however one thing which is a great factor in making up a good team missing and that is the scrub with the graduation of the pres ent senior class a large number of experienced players will leave college thus making openings on next year's team which will have to be filled now the game of lacrosse cannot be learned in a few weeks or even months and these positions can only be filled properly by men who have had some experience in playing in a game toe place to learn is on the scrub before the easter holidays a large scrub was on the field on all occasions when the weather per mitted practice but since the close of the holidays there has been a gradual dropping of any man who is not physically disabled can derive the greatest benefit from this game and to those men trying for the track and gymnasium teams a better field for getting into condition and training could
