the president touched on chapel attendance saying in substance that every man ought to go to chapel on sunday morning if for no other reason than to get his mind off his college work and give the day up to rest the trustees of the university thought it ad visable to abolish compulsory chapel on sunday so that no pen alty will be attached for non attendance but nevertheless every man is expected to hand in a chapel slip stating whether or not he attended chapel on the pre ceding sunday dr drown commended the sophomore class in abstaining from the customary rush at the opening of the university and hoped that they would continue to conduct themselves as well dr drown in closing his speech announced that president taylor of yassar college would make the usual address on founder's day he will speak on some political subject of the day all seniors and freshmen will occupy their usual seats in the transept while the juniors and sophomores will seat themselves in the nave of the chapel football lehigh 0 princeton 43 lehigh played princeton at princeton n j on saturday and was defeated by the score of 43 to 0 princeton clearly outclassed the visitors and played a game un usually fast and snappy for the first game of the year their in terference worked in excellent shape their fumbling occurred very seldom and their tackling through out was of the highest order le high's form was not up to the ex pectations the light line was utterly unable to sustain the at tacks of princeton's heavy rushes and on the offence lehigh backs were too slow in starting to make any headway before the princeton line was upon them it was how ever due to princeton's immense advantage in weight that the vic tory was so decisive the game began at 3.05 o'clock the ball in princeton's possession holderness received the ball on the kick-off and carried it back twenty yards before being downed lehigh tried line bucks but was repulsed for three downs and the ball went to princeton thirty yards were made by a run around right end and five more were made by a line buck by kelly wheeler was shoved over for a touchdown but fumbled the ball in the scrim mage where baird fell upon it baird kicked the goal holt se cured the ball on the next kick-oft and immediately passed it to ban nard who made several yards be fore being downed kelly made forty yards around right end and followed it up with five through the centre by short line bucks the ball was quickly carried to lehigh's goal line where holt carried it over no goal lehigh again kicked off and rushes by princeton's backs quickly carried the ball down the field near the goal lehigh rallied and held for four downs but was unable to make the necessary gains and holderness was forced to kick princeton obtained the ball and by rushes carried it over in five min utes time the goal was kicked the next touchdown was made by wheeler three minutes later the goal was missed and time was called with the ball in the centre of the field the second half was very much a repetition of the first princeton gained through the line and around the ends lehigh when the ball was in her possession tried the kicking game holderness punted very well under the circumstances but wheeler's returns were equally as good and the lehigh backs could not catch the ball as did the princeton men the game was called at 4.30 the final score being 43 the reception given to the class of 1901 by the y m 0 a sat urday evening was probably the best in the history of the associa tion it is gratifying to note the attendance and interest shown especially by the incoming class the room presented a very at tractive appearance having been decorated for the occasion with the college colors in the shape of bunting and banners the general aspect of the room has been greatly improved du*ring the summer having been repainted and renovat ed under the supervision of fletcher 1900 the funds for the work were raised by subscription a large portion being subscribed by the members of the faculty there was no regular program the evening being spent in an in formal manner v 11 kied 99 furnished instrumental music and 11 a wilcox 99 sang in his usual good style dr drown made an address in which he briefly stated his pleasure in welcoming and giving a few words of good advice to the men then turning to the freshmen he complimented them on their com mendable habit of early rising and taking exercise before breakfast abundant refreshments were served to all and the reception broke up with songs and yells much credit is due the committee for their skilful management the remainder of the evening was spent in singing well known college songs interspersed with class arid college yells the college spirit which has been said to be so wofully lacking at lehigh was much in evidence child's 98 president of the society announced the beginning of the sunday even ing meetings in christmas hall it is hoped that the students will turn out well at these meetings as the work is interesting and the meeting place inviting college meeting on saturday last president drown called the first college meet ing of the year to order and announced that these meetings would be held on every subsequent saturday throughout the year at these meetings questions of great importance to the college will be discussed and on alternate satur days class meetings will be held every man is compelled to attend these saturday meetings and to occupy the same seat each time so that absences can be taken the classes will be seated according to seniority the arrangement of seats will be posted later on the bulletin board if there is to be no meeting on saturday it will be posted on the preceding friday on next saturday the report of the different class officers will be heard on the honor system dr drown announced that the result of the ballots on the honor system last year was that the students were in favor of the honor system ; but they did not believe in inform ing on their fellow students he then said that the faculty had decided to accept the pledge of the students without this objectionable feature next saturday's meeting will be for the purpose of deciding how the honor system is to be governed whether the honor court shall inflict the punishment or not
