the united states civil service commission announces that on jan 8 1898 an examination will be held at washington d c and other places throughout the united states for the position of computer in the nautical almanac office from the register established as the result of this examination three vacancies will be filled in the posi tion of computer to be paid for i piece work in the nautical alma nac office navy department the department states that only men are eligible for appointment to these three vacancies the follow ing are the subjects and weights of the examination algebra 3 geometry 2 plane and spherical trigonome try 4 elements of differential and in tegral calculus 2 logarithms 5 spherical astronomy 4 total 20 persons desiring to enter this ex i animation should at once write to i the united states civil service commission at washington d c for application blanks forms 304 1 and 374 which should be properly executed and promptly returned to the commission football nominations calendar thursday dec 2 — meeting of the e e society physical labora tory at 7 p m friday dec 3 — meeting of for um in saucon hall at 7 p m saturday dec 4 — special meeting of agora at 7.30 p m sunday dec 5 — kegular meeting of christian association at 6.15 p m in christmas hall ■*. notices the college men are cordially invited to attend the l u c a meeting next sunday at 6.15 p m the subject treated will be the universities of europe india china japan and australia as centres for christianity it was developed by john r mott of cornell during 1895-96-97 and is set forth in his book strategic points in the world's conquest 7 five minute sketches will be given by different men committee dec 4 quiz on irving's life and works dec 11 — dr semple will fec turo on edgar allen poe dec 18th mr emery will lec ture on emerson prof thayer dr franklin will lecture ob soldering before the electrical engineering society on thursday evening dec 2 a large attend ance is desired the meeting thursday evenings of the agora has been postponed there will be a special meeting of the society on saturday dec 4r4 r at 7 p m ■. ; algebra — dec 4 re-examinations entrance subjects professor merriman's discussion of meth ods of firing from mortar batter ies the last number of the united states artillery journal contains an article by professor mansfield merriman on the probability of hitting a ship by different meth ods of fire from mortar batteries the paper was prepared as a con tribution to a discussion now go ing on among army officers as to the most economic method of aiming the mortars of a battery when firing a volley of shot at an approaching vessel " the typical method of the united states army is to aim the mortars parallel to each other instead of aiming each one independently at the vessel the mathematical in vestigation presented by professor merriman is one by which the probable number of hits on the deck of the vessel can actually be computed and it is shown that the parallel method of aiming is not as econom ical as the independent method the latter having an ad vantage on the average of about twenty-five per cent thus the probable number of hits by the parallel method is about four fifths of the number that may be expec ted by the independent method at the meeting of the american mathematical society in october professor merriman read an ab stract of his paper his views being supported by profeseor johnson of the united states naval academy while dr jacoby of columbia university claimed that the par allel method of fire was in general the most advantageous the paper of professor merriman has recently been published in pamph let form sophomore cotillon club a meeting of the executive com mittee of the sophomore cotillon club was held at the sigma phi house on monday evening it was decided by the committee to hold two dances during the season at the eagle hotel the first dance will be held on the evening of the tenth of december the second date was not definitely fixed mr ruhe of allentown has been secured to furnish the music and dreka of philadelphia will supply the invi tation and dance cards -
