john wiley & sons of new york have just published an ele mentary work on the mechanics of materials by professor mansfield merriman a casual examination of this work will show the advan tage it offers in presenting to begin ners the foundation principles of this important study the sub ject is treated in professor merri man's usual clear concise way and can be readily understood by stu dents who have studied arithmetic algebra geometry and such a course in mechanics as is found in elementary works on the subject it will be found of especial value to students in the higher classes of manual training schools and of high schools where the above men tioned branches have been studied the merits of this work need not be commented on as professor mer riman is well recognized as a stand ard authority in this branch of scientific study notices col 11 g prout editor of the railroad gazette who is a recog nized authority on the maintenance and operation of railroads will de liver a lecture in the university course on saturday dec 18 at 9.30 a m the subject will be " railroad accidents and jlow to prevent them on thursday evening dec 9 mr keim will read a paper before the c e section on park row office buildings these are the largest in the world and the de scription of them will be instruc tive and interesting dec 11 — dr semple will leo turo on edgar allen poe dec 18th — mr emery will lee ture on emerson prof thayebi the general engineering society will meet in the physical labora tory on thursday evening dec 9}9 } immediately after the meeting of the civil section all members are urged to be present as matters of importance will be discussed there will be a meeting of the s c c at sigma phi house on thursday dec 9 at 7 p m a full atteudance is requested joint meeting of the forum and agora those who are interested in the work of our literary societies vill be pleased to hear that the joint meeting of the two societies will occur on saturday dec 18 not withstanding the erroneous reports of its postponement through the generosity and the efforts of president drown and professor thayer a substantial money prize will be given to the society win ning the debate the arrangement of the program will be left to the societies the subject selected for debate is : " kesolved that the exclusive study of science tends toward skepticism the forum will defend the negative and the agora the affirmative in addition there will be several orations and music invitations will be sent only to members of the faculty and to members of the two societies each will be invited to bring a lady there was a manifest increase in the interest in the societies after the dedication of the meeting hall last year this year there are abundant evidences of a lively in terest and indications point toward a successful meeting which will doubtless result in a material wid ening of the influence of the work of the societies » prospects seem bright for the revival of a lacrosse team at cor nell this branch of athletics has been neglected since the disband ing of the 95 team walter camp will review the football season and select an au american team in the next issue of harper's weekly football metallurgists 4 99 civils 0 on monday last a hotly contested game of football was played be tween the 99 civils and a team composed of men picked from all the classes in metallurgy the latter team proved to be the better of the two and won by the above score both teams played a fast game and it was only through a fumble and a pretty run by james 01 that the metallurgists were able to score the only touchdown of the game the ball was in the center of the field most of the time neither side having much of an advantage the civils had possession of the ball when the game was called on account of darkness becerra 99 and dornin 99 acted as referree and umpire respectively the line-up was as follows : metallurgists civils pettit right end caprilles thurston right tackle carman butler right guard williams sanchez center wooden schwerin left guard reid bovt left tackle clarke galan left end keys james quarter-back leidy higgin s right half-back . . o sanchez chamberlain left half-back jackson heisey full half-back gledhill there will be a joint meeting of the agora and forum on saturday evening dec 18 ♦ the senior electricals will have a shop visit to wilkes-barre on saturday election of manager and assist ant manager of the football team will be held on wednesday dec 15 l u a a election communication editors brown and white from reading recent issues of the brown and white it is evident that several of the associations of the university are in anything but a flourishing condition in only the last issue there was an appeal from the mathematical club ; also one from the musical organizations and never a week passes but that some one or more of the societies or teams has to make a plea for its very existence now one doesn't have to look far for the reason of all this the whole trouble lies in the fact that at present there are more organ izations at lehigh than the num ber of students can support yet some young hopeful suggests starting a branch society of the daughters of the revolution now there is only one remedy for all this instead of starting any such useless clubs let the men devote their time to the oldest ones and help make them an honor to the university not more than three years ago lehigh boasted one of the best college glee and banjo clubs in the country at the same time the mustard and cheese was revived and gave one of its most successful performances four years ago we ranked fifth among college football teams and at the same time won the inter-collegiate championship of the united states in lacrosse not long before this our baseball team covered itself with glory by winning from the leading teams in ihe country and about the same time the lehigh quarterly flourished being a maga zine that any university might be proud to send out yet today there is not a single one of these clubs up to that standard in stead we have a track team we are ashamed to send away ; a losing football team ; a baseball team that from its auspicious start is ranked with the best in the country gets the swelled head and stops play ing a banjo club that scarcely even rehearses ; oratorical contests that have become extinct for want of contestants ;
