              dr macfarlane's lec tures the course of lectures on the application of complex quanti ties to alternating currents was finished last week there were given in all five lectures dis tribited during the past two weeks they treated of a subject of vast importance to the study of mathe matical physics and were instruc tive in a great degree to all that had the pleasure of hearing them the solution of complex quanti ties as effected in pure mathe matics is equally applicable to the theory of electricity the three principal problems which occur in the study of alternating currents are treated and solved in an exactly similar manner as may also be all questions so occurring in the course of lectures the mathematical treatment of com plex quantities was first given with the methods of solution of all possible cases later was shown their adaptation to the study of the theory of alternating currents and the properties of the current represented by each part the last lectures of the series were devoted to an explanation of the solution of the most important problems occurring in the subject witli reference to their theoretical qualities the questions which arise in the study of this subject can be satisfactorily investigated only by these means hence it be comes of considerable importance that a fair knowledge of them be had by the investigator or he will shortly find himself hopelessly confounded in endeavoring to ob tain a solution to his difficulties gun club the gun club held a very suc cessful shoot at its traps on the athletic field saturday the men as a whole showed some improve ment over their previous form van duyne broke the club record at unknown angles by hitting 20 birds out of a possible 25 some of the other scores are as follows : zalinski 16 palmer 11 eckert 9 lawton 7 and dornin 12 the gun club has about decided to hold the return shoot with the university of pennsylvania gun club on the morning of the 16th of april «- tulane's faculty will be asked by the students to exempt those men from examinations who attain a certain percentage in their class standing said percentage to be at the discretion of the faculty williams college is seriously considering the question of build ing a new athletic field with an improved track the cost will amount to about 12,000 and is expected to come from the alumni it has not materialized as yet how ever notices re-examinations - there-examination in mechanics of cranes and locomotives will take place on wednesday march 23 at 2 r m there will be an examination in mechanics of hoisting machinery on tuesday march 22 at 2 p m there will be a rehearsal of the glee club in christmas hall on tuesday evening march 22 at 7 o'clock it is very important that every member attend hare—comparative economy of steam and gas engines hillman an underground sys tem for rapidly delivering mail parcels etc in new york city knight compressed air kodjbanoff — mechanical con trivances used in the construction of east river tunnel luckenbach — the effect of nickel upon the physical proper ties of steel marshall the erection of an electric elevator for passenger service riegel the comparative effi ciency of small coal determined by special testf roper the design of an elec tric elevator for the warehouse of roper & co petersburg va scovil utilization of saucon creek as a water power starkey the temperature —■ entropy curve and its applica tions to engineering symington discussion of jet air turbine applied to portable differential drill waring — determination of power needed to drive a vessel at a given speed warren a comparison of belt and electric transmission in a textile mill wood t b.—design of a pul ley moulding machine wood w b.—utilization of saucon creek as a water power worthington are high speed pumps feasible ? —. ♦ a japanese university for women will be founded in tokio the money needed has been partly subscribed by the emperor and the state ministers electrical engineer ing society dr macfarlane addressed the electrical engineering society at its regular meeting on thursday evening on the laws of alterna ting currents the regular order of business was dispensed with and the whole evening devoted to the lecture dr macfarlane first presented the three essential laws of direct current electricity ohm's kirchhoff's and joule's laws under the last of which may be classed the power equation he then stated as his object during the course of the evening the pre sentation of the precise analogies of these laws which apply to alternate current electricity for this purpose he represented the mathematical relations and express ed by these laws by means of equa tions of the complex quantity the properties of alternating currents and electromotive forces being exactly coincident with the prop erties assigned in pure mathe matics to the complex quantity and by solving such equations he not only proved the general analogy in significance of the original as applied to direct currents and of the new as applied to alternating but actually secured expressions for the latter of exactly the same form and appearance he considered the laws of ohm and kirchhoff the latter of which can be demonstrated in its application to both maximum and instantaneous values of alterna ting current and electromotive force graphically and analytically but in the representation of the power equation by means of the complex quantity in the assump tion of an apparently analogous hypothesis an equation results which from what is actually known to result in an alternating circuit would appear to destroy the consistency of the entire process it was in the discussion of this case that dr macfarlane on a new hypothesis deduced an equation entirely fulfilling the requirements of the circuit to which it was ap plied this equation is most.beau tiful in its ultimate simplicity and in its verification of the permissi bility of application of the complex quantity to every phase of alternate current treatise its investigation is entirely original with dr mac farlane and has never been pre sented elsewhere before undoubt edly its application will open a new and interesting field in the science to which it is adapted on the completion of his paper the electrical engineering society tendered dr macfarlane a unani mous vote of thanks the society feels highly honored in the recog nition given it in granting it the first privilege of observing and studying the results of his most recent studies and researches titles of the theses of the m e.'s of 1898 ballard — when is it economical for a railroad to buy locomotive parts ?
