the detailed account of the game is as follows : for lehigh pomeroy went out on a grounder to first e grace hit to pitcher and carman was out third to first first innmg — huston the first man at the bat for pennsylvania went out on a grounder to e grace frazier bunted to white and was thrown out at first wil helm hit to second and was thrown out at first second inning — in this inning pennsylvania was retired on three pitched balls bailey after a beau tiful run caught jackson's fly ten yards to the right of the foul line on the next ball gillinder flied out to james and on the third ball pitched robinson fouled out to carman j w grace was out on a fly to short white struck out and reed went out short to first third inning — coombs hit to first and was out sherrille drove a line hit over second brown struck out and the side was retired by houston's fly to bailey for lehigh james and bailey went out from third to first and hollingsworth short to first fourth inning — frazier went out on a fly to white wilhelm reached first on balls jackson struck out gillinger hit between second and short but robinson fouled out to first retiring the side pomeroy went to first on four balls and was advanced to second on e grace's hit reaching third on a passed ball while grace stole second carman struck out w grace was out on a fly to short and the side was retired by white on strikes continued on second page fifth inning — coombs opened with a hit and was advanced to second on another hit by sherrille the next two men went out on fouls to carman frazier hit to e grace and was safe at first on a poor throw coombs scoring dr drowns reception last thursday evening dr and mrs drown gave an informal reception to the freshman class in spite of the stormy weather a large number responded to the president's invitation and spent a very agreeable evening listening to an illustrated address by dr hyde on " rome besides the freshmen there were present a number of the faculty and corps of instructors dual meet lehigh 38 ; lafayette 57 the first field meet between lafayette and lehigh for three years was won by the former by the score of 57 to 082 last satur day the meet was held on laf ayette's athletic field at easton the attendance was small and the games lost interest to the specta tors on account of the slowness with which the events were run off the games opened with the hundred-yard dash in which hom er and reamer took part for lehigh walbridge got a lead of several yards on a questionable start and homer and reamer were unable to make this distance up although both gained upon him the second event the running high jump was contested by farn ham and symington for lehigh and walbridge chidsey and ely for lafayette as the height in creased chidsey and ely dropped out and farnham with an injured back failed at five feet one inch for first and second places wal bridge and symington tied at 5 feet 3 inches jhe 120-yard hurdle was easily won by clarke lafayette with reese lehigh second and chidsey lafayette third dehm lehigh won the mile run nicely with bodler lafayette second third place was hotly contested for by tobleman lehigh and heckman lafayette tobleman passing heckman in a pretty sprint down the homestretch in the quarter-mile homer started out at a terrible pace keep ing it up until the last turn but he played out at the finish reese lafayette winning with wal bridge lafayette third in the pole vault butler and sanchez dropped out the latter with a dislocated shoulder leaving reamer and two lafayette men first place was won by weaver lafayette second by reamer and third by rutter james lehigh won the running broad jump lafayette in hendel man and clarke getting the other places the 220-yard hurdle was won by clarke lafayette with eeese lehigh second brice lehigh had third place up until the last hurdle which reese who was just before him jostled it was falling when brice reached it and in some way it tripped him chidsey lafay ette who was close behind thus passed him the hammer throw was won by lafayette our men showing a lamentable lack of practice in the 220 yard dash homer lehigh came first with brice le high second and ilagney lafay ette third tabulated score is as follows . 100 yards dash walbridge lafayette continued on third page the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa tuesday may 31 1898 vol y no 60 lacrosse lehigh 5 toronto 14 last saturday the lehigh lacrosse team played their annual game with toronto the game was one of the best of the season but in spite of this fact and the recent mass meeting the attendance was small both teams played a good game without any unneces sary roughness at 3.45 p m the ball was put into play and parried down the field by toronto's attack toron to made a try for goal but the shot was stopped by dornin and promptly returned to our attack who failed to shoot goal after the ball had changed hands a number of times toronto shot the first goal four minutes after play started on the face-oft toronto got the ball tried to shoot but failed and the ball went to lehigh's attack three attempts were made but failed after six minutes of play digby shot the first goal for lehigh in the next twenty min utes of play toronto scored seven goals in spite of the splendid play ing of the home team the first half ended with the score 8 to 1 in favor of toronto the second half opened with rather poor passing on the part of toronto but they managed to keep the ball near our goal for five minutes when it was lost and passed to symington who shot a goal lehigh now strengthened considerably and scored four more goals while toronto scored six during this half the final score was 14 to 5 in favor of toronto noticeable features of the game were the playing of p starkey in lehigh's goal and burns for toronto the line-up was as follows : lehigh positions toronto p istarkey goal h.tuley middledith point morrow dornin cover point kingston boyr first defence wales gummere second defence graham paddock third defence button abbott centre bogart edgar third attack snell digbee second attack barues starkey first attack bittou symington,capt out home cleland capt thurston in home cross goals burns 6 cross 3 cleland 2 bilton 3 ; pennsylvania 3 lehigh was defeated by the university of pennsylvania by the close score of 3 to 2 monday after noon on lehigh field it was a pitcher's battle from the beginning both pitchers being evenly matched and well supported by their respec tive teams neither team scored until the fifth inning when penn sylvania bunched two hits and scored on a poor throw to first at several times in the game le high had chances of winning but brown by his steady pitching pulled his team through safely lehigh also lost several chances to score by poor base running the features of the game were the running catch by bailey of jack son's foul fly in right field e grace's catch of a line drive to short and the double play of james and pomeroy
