a place for this sport the one thing needful is to awaken interest on the other side of the bay at the university of california and it is expected that intercollegiate rivalry will do the rest there are probably few games which are so useful in giving all round development and few sports so all-absorbing and fascinating as lacrosse it is like chess golf or curling in that its devotee becomes its slave one great advantage in the game is that there is no great amount of team play and the play ers may do most of their training alone beyond learning the trick of throwing and catching the ball with the crosse there is no great skill required speed and endur ance are the chief requisites al most anyone having these qualities may learn lacrosse twelve men constitute a team and of course a much larger number of candidates are wanted to begin work the only outfit needed is a crosse costing from two to four dollars and an ordinary running suit — daily palo alto the lehigh university sound money league at the meeting of the sound money league of the university held in christmas hall monday afternoon the following permanent officers were elected : president g c white 97 of virginia ; vice presidents 0 m barton 97 of indiana ; w g hare 98 of penn sylvania ; h a wilcox 99 of connecticut and h t greene 1900 of new york ; secretary and treasurer t merriman 97 the committee appointed to draw up a platform presented the following which was adopted as read : the students of the lehigh uni versity gathered from every state in the union do in mass meeting assembled regardless of party affili ations or party lines declare them selves in favor of an organization to be called " the sound money league of the lehigh university and adopt the following platform as a statement of their principles : section i we believe that it is the duty of all intelligent and patriotic americans to bf stir them selves and take an active interest in the coming conflict between national honor and dishonor and in accordance therewith do we as an intellectual centre agree to do all that in our power lies by private persuasion and public demonstra tion and by the strength of our as sociation to win the fight for right and conquer wrong sec 11 we declare ourselves unreservedly the advocates of sound money we uphold the ex isting gold standard of our country because it is the true measure of value and the money standard in the most enlightened nations in the world sec 111 we are unalterably opposed to the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 since it opposes international bimetalism and tends towards the unquestionable evil of silver mono metalism which will derange all values and inflict unmeasured in jury to our fellow countrymen without adding one benefit sec iv we denounce the demagogues who have attempted to make this issue a so-called class and sectional one for we believe that in this united republic all meet upon the level and part upon the square sec y we uphold the federal government in its constitutional interpretation and intent sec vi we will use every legitimate means to assist in the utter defeat on nov 3 of wm jennings bryan works s c c at a meeting of the sophomore cotillion club held saturday even ing the following were elected to compose the executive committee for the coming year : braden baugh jackson eeddig middle dith visscher and wood the first dance will be given the beginning of december at no time this fall has the scrub been composed of the same players for two consecutive days so that it is rather difficult to say who the men are that compose it paine wooden and johnson have all played centre paine in the early part of the season did very well his snapping was fair and his tackling was excellent he was in more plays probably than any of the five centre men wooden gets the ball to the quarter in first class style but unfortunately there his work ends he plays too high and is too apt to try to block his man the same way every time it is more difficult to find men who make suitable guards van duyne pennington fincke and hannum would do very well if they would come out more regu larly the tackles are more easily picked out hood homer gied hill and schwerin are all strong men fairly heavy and should im prove with steady practice chamberlain slade bucher and youtsey are all good men for the ends they are fast get down the field quickly on kicks tackle in good form and have plenty of nerve at breaking interference there are a number of good men for back of the line positions knight at quarter has no equal outside of the varsity he passes the ball in good form and is very effective in the interference for the halfback positions there are james saunders reese ma gee chamberlain homer and santchez these men all play very well but do not come out regularly enough at fullback pfiueger is about the only reliable man he is a good ground gainer fair catch good tackier and considering the way in which the varsity line breaks through is a very steady kicker playing on the scrub is an ex cellent way to learn the game and no one who has the time should miss the opportunity «©. _ the cutter electrical manufac turing company of philadelphia has recently presented the elec trical engineering department with an automatic magnetic circuit breaker by means of a hollow electro magnet when the current becomes sufficiently strong an iron rod bearing a soft iron weight at its lower end is drawn up into the magnet thus releasing a spring at the other end of the
