lehigh university gun club tuesday evening the regular meeting of the gun club was held at the phi gamma delta house president cramer presided but there being no quorum business of little importance was transacted the members were urged to pay up their assessment as soon as possible as no apparatus and pigeons can be bought without money nothing definite in regard to shooting grounds had been ar ranged galan 98 was proposed for membership after consider able discussion in regard to finan ces the meeting adjourned cornell has chosen the following subject for the cornell-pennsylva nia dsbate to be held march 6 : " resolved that the united states and the several states should es tablish courts of compulsory ad justment of disputes between em ployers and private corporations which possess franchises of public nature r c davis 98 has been chosen captain of the west point football team for next year the new indoor track at the university of pennsylvania has been completed and trainer mur phy has issued a call for candidates to meet a member of the missouri legis lature has drawn up a bill which will place football on the same level as prize fighting the bill if it becomes a law makes it a misdemeanor or a felony to play the game anywhere in the state although the proposed legislation is severely criticised throughout the state those introducing the bill are confident of its becoming a law the idea of having a hockey team at pennsylvania this year is being agitated > the big four football team will lose the following men this year : princeton — smith q b gailey c brokaw 1 c church 1 t u of p — wharton r g wood ruff 1 g farrar r t gelbert r h b harvard — frank shaw c beale q b ; eph iv,29v tuesday dec 15 — sophomore co tillon club dance at eagle hotel meeting of civil section of engineering society physical laboratory 7 p m thursday dec 17 — last of series of free public lectures on the " chemistry of every day life subject " chemistry of foods by dr t m drown friday dec 18 — meeting of 9 epitome board 7.30 p m meeting of chess club chris tmas hall 7.30 p m wednesday dec 23 — christmas holidays begin at 12.30 monday jan 4 — christmas holi days end at 8.15 a m the agora at the regular meeting of the agora held in the new room in s°.ucon hall president hood made the following remark in regard to the intercollegiate union : " the financial conditions are in a first class shape better than any pre vious year the places of holding the con tests were selected as follows but were afterwards changed as will be mentioned : gettysburg to have the contest in 1897 lafayette in 1898 and lehigh in 1899 with the privilege of changing its time to any succeeding year by mutual agreement it was de cided that muhlenberg and gettys burg would change their time of holding the contests so that the next oratorical contest will be held at allentown friday march 19 1897 under regular business hood tendered his resignation as presi dent of the society it was accepted and horn 98 was elected to the vacancy the president was directed to appoint a committee of two to confer with another committee from the forum in fixing the time and manner of holding exercises for the dedication of the new rooms owing to withdrawals of the vice president and treasurer to form the new society it was necessary to hold elections for these offices hess 98 was elected vice presi dent but no treasurer was elected heller 1900 was elected to membership and zimmerman 98 and shirner 99 were proposed for membership the society selected monday and thursday nights as the times for holding its meetings according to a prearranged plan with the forum to select two out of the first tour nights of the week it was decided to hold the next meeting monday dec 21 at 7.15 p m notices there will be a short but im portant meeting of the forum r saturday evening december 12 at 7 o'clock in the newly fitted up room in saucon hall it is es pecially desired that all the mem bers shall be present as business will have to be transacted which directly concerns every member . of the society a meeting of the mustard aßjd cheese was held last evening bu v t the proceedings of the meeting are purposely withheld until the next issue fully justified the following is an extract of an article which appeared in the last number of harper's weekly by caspar whitney the eminent sporting critic : i have gone into the matter pretty thoroughly first because it is typical of the character ot dis putes that are continuously arising and will continue to arise as long as ' summer ' nine playing is per mitted college under-graduates ; and second because the facts have been submitted to me by both le high and lafayette with the re quest for an expression of opinion in my judgment based on the evidence before me lehigh was fully justified in protesting bar clay and of subsequently cancel ling the game with lafayette when the latter insisted on playing him * * * i wh a t other expenses an amateur could legitimately incur beyond transportation and board i cannot imagine barclay itemizes mask gloves and protector in his statement and we credit his claim although it is usual with clubs to furnish such necessary equipment to their players but this would still leave sixty-five dollars for other expenses for which we can conceive no need in the legitimate requirements of an amateur " the chambersburg manager's telegram furthermore does not sat factorily quiet the suspicion created by barclay's receipts for money as an ' advance or ' for salary it scarcely seems likely that a man would receipt as due on salary the reimbursements of legitimate ex pense-money he had used we may be excused if we err in as suming a college man to have too clear an understanding of his mother-tongue to make such a blunder " if barclay is the victim of cir cumstances it is unfortunate but all the testimony submitted and disputed on to no material issue points to an unwavering conclusion that lehigh's claim of his haying received money over and above the legitimate expenses of an ama teur is entirely justifiable and tenable mathematical club at the meeting of the mathe matical club on tuesday night horn 98 98 read a paper on the prismoidal formula after stating the formula and proving it mr horn devoted the remainder of the paper to showing its applicability it was shown that in any case of a solid contained between two parallel planes of which the area of any section parallel to these planes can be expressed by a rational in tregal algebraic function of a de gree not higher than the third of its distance from either of these bounding planes or bases the vol ume may be determined by this formula thus in the solids of revolution any mid-section being circular if we let y be the revolv ing ordinate of any point in the generating curve pi y2y 2 will be the area of the section at a distance x from one end of the solid conse quently by the above rule if pi y2y 2 equals q plus m x 2x 2 plus nx 2 plus / x 3x 3 in which q m n and/are constants depending on the solid the prismoidal formula is ap plicable by determining the num ber of combinations of four things taken one two three and four to gether the number of possible va rieties of the above expression was found to be fifteen to each one of which there will be at least one solid of revolution generated by the curve whose equation that par ticular variety of the above ex pression is in connection with the above he deduced expressions for the vol umes of paraboloids and ellipsoids of revolution in terms of known quantities for such solids and showed how simple the method was particularly as compared with all others used heretofore in or der to show the applicability of the formula to all other solids not of revolution but conforming to the above rule o applicability he took the particular cases of the pyramid and its frustrums and the groin by means of this formula all the results are perfectly accurate and have the advantage of being secured with but a comparative ly small amount of work the subject was well treated and showed much careful study on the part of the author mr h a foering was elected to member ship of the club after which the meeting adjourned
