the english college boys are now playing football on horse back dedication of the ago ra and forum de bating hall president horn of the agora opened the exercises of the evening before a large audience of college men and instructors by a discussion of the preliminaries relating to the lafayette-lehigh debate accord ing to the resolution adopted last year by the two colleges each college shall appoint two delegates to meet and arrange for the com ing contest lehigh has this year appointed hood 97 of the agora and meaker 99 of the forum to represent her in arranging the de bate shuman 97 gave a reading after which president horn an nounced professor thayer and in structors semple and emery as judges for the evening's debate " eesolved that the united states should recognize the billigerency of the cuban insurgents the agora took the affirmative and the forum the negative the judges deciding in favor of the latter afier the debate president drown read letters from messrs wilbur and say re the donors of the rooms expressing their regret at being unable to be present at the dedication exercises dr drown addressed the socie ties and said in part : our simple exercises in dedicating these rooms to the uses of tlie agora and the forum societies mark i hop the begin ning of a new era in the history of lehigh universit3 t . there is a tendency among students and more particularly students of technology to take a too narrow view of their college life which broadly conceived is to fit men for a future career of greater influence and usefulness i would say als >, without hesitation of a college so largely technical as lehigh that it is of more im portance that her graduates should be u^h ful citizens than that they shoul i be thor oughly trained engineers fortunately we are not driven to mike a choice m these respects for if our college life fulfills its high aims a young man will be fitted here to become both a good engineer and a good citizen tl c n actice of engineering as of law or of mcdi me is only one side of a man's life h.u veal life is in his relations to his fellow man ; hornor hilken reddig and youtsey nominations were then made for the calculus cremation committee the election to be held next tues day farwell 98 has been elected manager and middledith 99 as sistant manager of the football team for next year those who have never tried se curing advertisements for one of our college publications know noth ing about the unpleasant features connected with this branch of col lege gratuitous work fully two thirds of the merchants met have a pitiful tale to tell about the stu dents owing them so much money one prominent laundryman in town says that he has on his books about 3000 in debts among le high students with this state of affairs is it any wonder that our efforts are not crowned with over whelming success there is a mis taken idea among the students that every man in town is trying to (> stick " them and thus they reason i the most beneficial thing they do is to get even with every possible by letting unpaid bills d so long as this siate ot affairs exists the student will be the greater loser and the sooner we realize this the better not only is this the case with outside disinterested parties but right here among ourselves there is a deplorable lack or indifference as to matters pecuniary this is acknowledged by the majority and easily proven should anyone question it why is it * are lehigh men poorer than men from othur colleges or do other colleges meet with the same difficulties last year as usual all clubs and fraternities were charged for inser tion in the ep tome and as a re sult about ioo of this remains unpaid taking all in all the present epitome board trying to profit by the experience of its pre decessors has decided to oblige all fraternities and clubs desiring in sertion in the 98 epitome to pay their fee in advance all cuts are now in the hands of last year's manager and he refuses to turn the same over to the 98 board until they are paid for any new club not before repre sented may have an insertion pro viding it pays for the cut and the regular fee on or before march 1 the time for the close of the competition in literary and artistic matter is rapidly approaching feb 1 and all who have any talent in that line are earnestly requested to make the competition spirited those submitting the best matter either artistic or literary both quality and quantity being consid ered will receive the prizes and a suitable mention in the epitome anyone desiring a copy of the epitome may procure the same by sending the business manager 1.50 and expressage h m daggett jr business manager resolutions at a meeting of the sophou class held tuesday noon the iolu lowing resolutions were unani mously adopted : whereas it has pleased our heavenly father in his infinite wisdom to take to himself a beloved friend and classmate ; and whereas we recognize our loss and humbly submit to his divine providence knowing that his ways are past finding out ; therefore be it resolved that in the death of richard allan harris we the class of 1899 of the lehigh uni versity have suffered the loss oi a classmate whose scholarly ability sincere friendship and sterlipg character endeared him to all liis associates ;
