the regular bi-weekly meeting of the forum was called to order in saucon hall by president star key and after the roll call and usual preliminaries the unfinished business was taken up griswold was appointed extemporaneous speaker of the evening the mat ter of selecting members to com pete with the agora for places in the lafayette debate was brought up and it was decided to consider all men candidates except those who requested otherwise two articles of the constitution relating to the duties and powers of com mittees were amended under new business a communi cation from lafayette was read containing the names of seven judges corresponding to the seven of theirs which lehigh approved the following question was sub mitted for the coming debate : " eesolved that the constitution of the united states should be so amended as to provide seats in congress for the members of the cabinet with the right to introduce bills and to participate in debate the next meeting of the forum will be a joint meeting with the agora on thursday march 4 for the purpose of deciding the side which lehigh will uphold in the coming debate this concluded the official business of the evening after which the society proceeded with the regular program of enter tainment president starkey criti cized the previous meeting fully though possibly a little too severely griswold responded to the call for an extemporaneous speech on the abolition of compulsory chapel and briefly expressed his opinion in its favor giving a num ber of reasons for so doing the debate on the question ee solved that capital punishment should be abolished was then proceeded with by the so ciety the speakers in the affirmative were stoeckel and palmer 99 ; on the negative were wooden 98 and keid 99 the debaters were very evenly matched and showed that consider able time and labor had been spent in preparation by each side mak ing the debate interesting through out eeid was not one of the ap pointed debaters but in spite of the short time given him for prepara tion he advanced some significant facts which materially aided his side of the question shriver gave a brief resume of the current events of the past two weeks followed by a general discussion of the question which was unusually spirited a vote on the merits of the question revealed a strong majority in favor of the negative which corresponded to the decision rendered by the judges messrs 1 frisby 98 hazel 98 and fletcher 1900 adjournment followed the university of chicago was defeated again this year m the an nual debate with the university of lowa the subject related to mu nicipal ownership and operation of street railways the winners de bated on the negative side the mott haven games will be held on saturday may 29 and the intercollegiate bicycle meet on the previous wednesday harvard and pennsylvania have scheduled a baseball game to be played in cambridge june 24 the harvard class day communication to the editors of the brown and white now that a successful effort has been made to re-establish our musi cal organizations it behooves the undergraduates alumni and indeed any and every one interested in the welfare of the college to make this the signal for a general rejuvena tion with a proper amount of interest which need not be ex cessive in any individual case this can be done and if it can be done there is no excuse for allowing the occasion to pass by without mak ing the most of it in this temporary organization which primarily is for the athletic association each man should find an opportunity to vent his enthusi asm and to show his love for and appreciation of his college not only by giving approval to the scheme but by taking an active interest in it and by doing his utmost to bring it to a successful conclusion by this is not meant that every one should try for a place on the club let those with the ability do their share in that respect but let the remainder of the college lake an equally active part athletics unfortunately are at low ebb and that this in part is due to our lack of facilities espec ially in the way of suitable grounds no one for a moment will dispute the college spirit of which so much has been said of late is present but it needs to be roused here then is an opportunity which if taken hold of in the right manner will go far towards awak ening the college men to a realiza tion of their lethargy and will instil into them a better spirit this spirit in turn will infuse new life into athletics and in general will tend to place us in a position on which we need look with noth ing but pride no doubt much difference of opinion will arise as to the best method for obtaining a favorable result and a college meeting should be called for the purpose of getting this very opinion and then to devise plans for carrying out the best suggestions every man should get his acquaintances and friends interested in the project heretofore too little attention has been paid towards gaining the esteem and the good will of the community without this we can not expect their assistance — with it we could be assured of their aid here then is another opportunity for reform each man too might be given a certain number of tick ets and made responsible for them in short it is a case where if each person puts his shoulder to the wheel nothing but success will result agora on thursday evening the subject resolved that an advance in science is detrimental to mankind was debated the attendance was small and owing to the indisposition of sim mers 99 mr.hazel was left alone to discuss the negative messrs watts and record's arguments for the affirmative were necessarily of a persuasive character mainly from the moral and religious duties of man to man the arguments advanced by mr hazel were of a practical nature and referred to the advantages and comforts of civilization accruing from an advance in science the judges messrs treichler childs and luten decided by a vote of two to one in favor of the negative after several announcements by the secretary in reference to the coming oratorical contest mr childs addressed the society for a few moments on the proper deliv ery for debaters messrs newton and stauffer were then elected to membership and the names of eckfeldt and ed monston propose the subject for the next meeting on thursday march 4 is : re solved that a course in electrical engineering offers greater advan tages to a young man than a course in civil engineering messrs hood homer and yorkes will support the affirmative and messrs shuman newton and shepp the negative notices the contest to choose lehigh's representative for the intercol legiate oratorical contest will be held in the chapel friday febru ary 26 at 2 p m the pennsylvania intercollegiate oratorical contest will take place at the academy of music allen town on friday evening march 12 tickets can be obtained from jvfea ker 99 starkey 98 horn 98 and hood 97 ross n hood president an important meeting of the junior class will be held on frid : a'y feb 26 in christmas hall to gether with other important busi ness the following amendment to the class constitution will be voted upon : all members of the junior class will become eligible voters by pay ing class dues from the beginning of the junior year only those members of the class can hold office who have paid the dues from the beginning of the freshman year president the winter meet the annual winter meet will be held in the gymnasium on satur day feb 27 at 2p m as stated in a previous issue of the brown and white the events will be : running broad jump running and standing high jumps running high kick fence vault parallel bars horizontal bar boxing and wrest ling at the following weights : under 125 pounds.l2s-140 pounds 140-155 pounds and over 155 pounds banners for winners in the different events have been on exhibition during the week in prominent store windows a banner will be given to the class scoring the highest number of points it is expected that the at tendance will be larger than that at the smoker on last saturday night the admission is 35 cents and 25 cents
