ec-examinations appointed by the faculty : modern languages all classes saturday march 20 ; english all classes saturday march 27 ; mathematics second term sub jects easter week ; mathematics first term subjects postponed to september college mass meeting a college mass meeting was held in dixon's hall on saturday even ing at which about 175 men as sembled the object of the gather ing was to promote good fellowship and interest in athletics and col lege affairs in general shortly after 8 o'clock order was called for and okeson 95 was made chairman of the meeting he imme diately took the chair and started the order of business with a rous ing speech in which he related many incidents of lehigh pluck and enthusiasm the way in which games had been won when defeat seemed certain and all because the players knew that they were play ing for the glory of their college and that they had the co-operation and support of every one of their fellow students he stated further that this sentiment did not to all appearances exist at the present time ; that the only way in which this dormant spirit can be aroused is for each man to take an active interest and do what he can to encourage those who are trying for positions on the different teams and to feel that he is in a way responsible for their success both individually and collectively in conclusion he said that he hoped to see a radical change in the state of affairs and that he felt confident that such would be the case yehman ex-'96 then recalled the time of dashiell blunt mc clung and coates and gave a pleasant talk on old times yates 97 spoke on general athletics and of the necessity of the men on the teams following implicitly even though blindly the orders of their captain and coacher manager white spoke on baseball and stated among other things that the schedule this year contained a large percentage of home games and that he earnestly hoped that they would receive proper support charlie pettinos at this point fav ored the meeting with several songs in his usual inimitable way after which short speeches were made upon various subjects by yorks 98 f b wood 98 hol derness 98 wettlaufer 97 mer riman 97 hershey 98 senior 97 van benthem 95 thorn 97 and sheppard 97 the meeting after tendering a vote of thanks to the committee adjourned notices mechanical section the regular meeting of this sec tion as to the many spectators the ground was very wet and disagreeable which made the shooting very difficult the scores were : zalinski 60 per cent waring 44 per cent van duyne 44 per cent palmer 41 per cent and cramer 24 per cent at a meeting held in the even ing a letter challenging the club to a shoot with the gun club of the university of pennsylvania was read after some discussion it was decided to ask that the date set be postponed so that the club might have an opportunity of se lecting the best possible team a shoot was decided upon for march 13,"and everybody that can lehigh university meeting president home of the agora presided at the meeting and intro duced as the first business of the evening the debate between mem bers of the agora on the question " eesolved that the electrical course offers greater advantages to a young man than does the civil the speakers of the evening were messrs hood 97 and hess 98 for the affirmative and shuman 97 and treichler 97 for the neg ative but the debate was not con fined to these men and during the evening ghilds 98 homer 98 luten 99 and horn 98 also spoke on the question hess the first speaker for the affirmative advanced some good arguments as did the other speakers on either side but after the first speeches the debaters seemed to forget the question un der discussion and many arguments were advanced that had no bearing whatever on the subject as a whole the debate was hardly satis factory neither side doing itself full justice the judges decided in favor of the negative the next business brought before the societies was that of choosing lehigh's side in the coming debate with lafayette a motion by treichler to put the matter in the hands of the committee was de feated following this was an impromptu debate on the merits of the two sides of the question child's 98 in a short speech set forth dr einger's views of the question concluding with a few arguments in favor of the negative this was followed by some sharp discussion between messrs hood 97 meaker 99 and laramy 96 a decision was finally arrived at to be submitted to lafayette by the committee another special meeting of the two societias in connection with this matter will be held on mon day evening at 7 o'clock on account of the steam engine examination today the meeting of the sophomore class will be held wednesday at 12.30 calculus cre mation and class supper will be discussed - j w grace pres a gift to the mechani cal department the mechanical department through the generosity of mr thomas m eynon lehigh 81 was on friday presented with a no 4 eynon-korting compound injector although this injector has been on the market but a compara tively short time it has since its ap pearance met with universal favor the injector is a combination of two steam jet apparatus ; the first proportioned for lifting and deliv ering the water under pressure into the second one where its velocity is sufficiently increased to over come the counter pressure in the boiler the duty is necessarily high owing to the fact that the combined area of the two steaia nozzles is smaller than that of other injectors of the same capacity the construction also allows its use with high or low pressure steam with water under pressure or suction mr eynon the donor of the in jector was for some time after his graduation an instructor in the mechanical department of this university in which capacity he served with credit to himself and to his alma mater he is now manager of a successful manufac turing concern in philadelphia — the eynon-evans manufacturing company engineers machinists founders and specialists in steam jet engineering mr eynon was recently president of the alumni association of lehigh university and has always evinced much in terest in the welfare and advance ment of the university along with the injector was re ceived a neatly gotten up catalogue describing the products manufac tured by the company
