seldom has he returned to public life with such a vigor of earnest purpose to subordinate the learned labors of the past to the stern duties of a citizen it is in this two-fold development of the powers of his mighty genius that milton has deserved well of his country ; and it is by viewing him in both of these relations to the thought of his time that we may gain the perfect conception of a character that was meant to be as symmetrical as it was commanding in the one he appeals to us by his poetry in the other by his prose ; and although the former may have gained him undying fame the lat ter is absolutely necessary to any comprehensive estimate of his life and work and cannot be ignored the lecturer then gave a short sketch of the milton family and added : v john milton was born in bread street london the 9th of december 1608 the middle mem ber of a group of three surviving children with whom he grew up the lecturer followed out closely the life of milton and his early works often quoting some of his more beautiful and noted poems in speaking of his prolonged trip on the continent the lecturer said : " from florence he went to rome obeying the natural gravitation of a scholar trained in the history and classics of italy there he visited and talked with galileo then a prisoner of the inquisition for proving that the earth moves here as every where milton showed his independence and courage by courting the freest expression of opinion tho warned repeatedly that policy counselled at least a temporary suppression of his views political and religious his very frankness led to the formation of friendships with some of the most eminent men of the time many of whom were in perfect accord with his views yet lacked the courage to avow them " after visiting naples milton was on the point of continuing his travels through sicily and greece when news of the disturbed state of public affairs at home tending rapidly towards civil war led him to abandon his plan of more ex tended travels and turn his course the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa thursday april 8 1897 vol iv no 47 agora and forum at the joint meeting of the agora and forum on wednesday evening the final debate for the purpose of choosing representa tives for lehigh in the coming lafayette-lehigh debate was held mr hood 97 who was one of the most promising candidates and who has represented us twice be fore in this capacity announced previous to the debate that owing to overpressure of college work he would be compelled to withdraw from all competition and therefore desired that his name be not con sidered the societies received his withdrawal with regret but thoroughly appreciated mr hood's reasons and were therefore forced to accept it immediately after the addresses of the various men competing the judges mr lambert dr semple and mr emery omitting therefore the name of mr hood returned a decision in favor of starkey 98 frisby 98 meaker 99 and childs 98 as alternate the question of choosing a rep resentative to the oratorical contest at chautauqua in july was then laid before the meeting mr kodjbanoff 98 was finally elected to the position by acclamation immediately following this the meeting adjourned homeward from private sources the world later learned the true motive for this change of plan ;
