next day lehigh defeated the university of virginia team by the score of 8 to 8 virginia lost through her weakness at bat and great number of errors some of which were costly lehigh batted well but fielded raiher loosely making two home runs and three double plays white pitched a steady game and accepted nine chances the latter remarkably good considering his handicap continued on supplement baseball univ of penna 15 lehigh 5 a large and enthusiastic crowd gathered on the athletic field sat urday to witness the baseball game between the university of penn sylvania and lehigh there was every reason to believe that the game would be a closely contested one and such was the case for the first six innings at the end of which the score stood 3 to 0 in lehigh's favor it seemed to be impossible for the pennsylvania batters to solve white's curves until in the seventh lehigh went in the air and pennsylvania started to pile up runs ; in this inning they made four runs in the eighth nine and in the ninth two more dickson pitched a steady game and received excellent sup port in the seventh inning rad cliffe pennsylvania's catcher broke his collar bone in sliding to third hoffer was substituted and played a good game in the eighth white on account of his knee which he wrenched in hopping to first had to retire senior took his place and peck went in at second base in place of senior it was rather a difficult position for senior to face but considering his condition he did fairly well but was not sup ported as he should have been carman played a steady game be hind the bat and threw to bases well the game in detail follows : the first man up was huston who was given his base on balls ; dickson reached first on a hit but was put out at second on huston's grounder and robinson flied out to kugitt gannon reached first on an error by gillender but was thrown out at second on a bunt by pomeroy who reached first k grace flied out and i'omeroy was caught while stealing second this ended the third radcliff'e was thrown out at continued on supplement governor's day cele bration friday april 23 was observed as arbor day at the university in the afternoon about five thou sand people including the pupils of the public schools of bethlehem and south bethlehem the faculty and undergraduates of the univer sity and many townspeople assem bled on the campus and witnessed the tree planting by governor hastings president drown in in troducing the governor said : " lehigh university is very highly honored today in this visit of the chief executive of the com monwealth and we are particularly grateful for your presence with us because we know that you are in terested in the things which most interest us during your term of office you have shown yourself the earnest and true friend of educa tion in the state in full realization of the fact that the only firm and abiding foundation of a republic is intelligent citizenship " you have been too zealous to promote the material welfare of the state and to preserve its natural beauty your arbor day proclamations have met with a quick and sympathetic response in the hearts of those who love this state which nature has so kindly and richly endowed with noble forests and fertile fields " and i am particularly happy today that the students of lehigh university,who are here preparing for lives of usefulness as engineers to add to the wealth and prosperity of the state and this vast concourse of school children have the privi lege of receiving a great lesson directly at your hands a lesson which you can teach better and more forcibly than we can — that the duties of citizenship do not cease with one's duty performed to his neighbor but that we owe an obligation to this goodly heritage our mother earth that it should not pass from our hands to our successors less fruitful and less beautiful than when it was com mitted to our keeping in future years this day will be known at lehigh university as governor's day and each succes sive year the lesson which you have taught today will be taught anew and when we shall all have passed away from these scenes other teachers and other students will stand in the shade of this tree and tell the tale — how that in the year of our lord eigh teen hundred and ninety-seven this tree was planted by governor hastings the loyal friend of the state and of the people governor hastings then planted the tree after which he made a short speech he said : " it is indeed a great pleasure for me to come before this gathering today ;
