of 55 football outlook at this time of year the natural question asked by the students is by what sort of a football team is le high likely to be represented this year as the most popular sport at lehigh football naturally has attained to a higher development than the other sports and as such more is demanded of it from the students the prospects at the end of last year were very bright for this season and though some of the men have not returned still if all who are now in college come out lehigh should have a team this fall which will reflect nothing but credit on its alma-mater of the players of last year four have not returned namely : best 95 who played end rush the two tackles budd 95 and houston,'9s and harrison 98 the left half this leaves captain trafton with a nucleus of seven old players to form his team this year the make-up of the team is of course so early in the year very problem atical but leaving the class of 99 out of consideration the team is likely to be somewhat like this : keys 96 will be found once more at his old post at centre rush he looks big and strong this year and that position will be as well taken care of as e,ver the position of left guard will of course be filled by captain trafton he is larger than ever this year and should be among the best guards of the season . the candidates for right guard are l w baldwin 96 and c becerra 98 if a good candidate does not appear foi tackle becerra is liable to play in that position leaving baldwin at guard or else baldwin will be niovecl into centre and keys pjay guard the other tackle will be filled by gunsolus . 9b who played on the famous 93 team but who did not come back last year he is strong heavy and quick and should fill the position most acceptably his strongest point is running with the ball as candidates for ends okeson 95 i still in college and if he'can be induced to play he will of course resume his old place for the other end a new man must be developed as yates 97 will be unable to play a most likely candidate is frlliot 97 who has played the position on his class team for two years with proper coaching he should develop into a first rate end among the other candidates for the position are bartles 96 graff 96 and knight 97 the back field with the excep tion of full-back seems pretty well settled gass 98 will play in his old position of quarter-back and should develop this year into a very valuable man he has the experi ence and coaching of last year back of him and should learn to give the welcome to freshmen the reception to the freshman class by the lehigh university christian association on saturday evening was a most enjoyable and well attended event the program was nicely arranged and smoothly carried out the freshmen were given a hearty wel come and made acquainted with fellow students and classmates friendly addresses enthusiastic singing enjoyable refreshments and hearty college yells composed the program shortly after 8 o'clock the re ception room was comfortably filled and the exercises were opened by president braton announcing that master salkeld easton's boy soprano would render the selec tion " only one girl in the world for me after hearty applause he responded with a second selec tion " ben bolt howell 96 then sang a good bass solo entitled " the minister president braton at this time ex pressed his gratification at such a full attendance and was especially pleased to welcome a number of the faculty dr drown kindly re sponded to a request and gave an interesting address in concluding his remarks dr drown spoke of the seeming indifference in the the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa september 16 1895 vol 111 no 2 calendar tuesday 17 — 12.30 freshman class meeting in chemical of dr drown regarding the singing chapel and related a very interest ing story about a young man with whom he recently came in contact in germany the refreshments for the even ing were put in the hands of a committee which did its work well everyone was served with coffee buns lemonade and cake and there was no scarcity in the supply the decorations in the room cer tainly deserve mention the ar tistic arrangement of the brown and white drapery and flags gave the room a beautiful appearance while the large figures 99 in the front were a constant reminder that the occasion was a warm wel come to the freshman class signals this year quickly and with plenty of head-work harrison will be missed at half back but the position will be filled by two experienced men in j w thurston 96 and barnard 98 thurston will probably play in his position of right half-back he is larger and stronger than last year and with two years experi ence behind him should improve accordingly barnard will play left half and if his work this year be equal to the form he showed in the two final games last year there need be no fear about the position being satisfactorily filled if fitzgerald can be induced to come out he will of course occupy his old position of full-back if he will not come out the tight seems to lie between senior,97 and holderness 98 neither are very strong in kicking senior being slightly better in running and tackling they are about equal with the odds all the way through slight ly in favor of senior on account of his size from the foregoing it can be seen that there is no reason why lehigh should not have a good team this year mcclung will be with the team until october 1 and he if anyone can infuse into the team the fast and snappy play which has always been the boast of lehigh teams in the past the first game is two weeks off and in that time the men should be pretty well rounded into form then it can be better told what the chances are for this year
