hess and schaub are outstanding players in lehigh's first game of season there will be a competition of candidates from the three lower classes for position of ass't musical director of mustard and cheese which will commence wednesday evening at 7 30 p m all competitors will please report in drown at the above time mustard and cheese issues a call for songs to be used in the forthcoming production waltzes ballads and snappy numbers especially are de sired please turn in the ma terial to roger neely at phi delta theta house as soon as possible brilliant team impaired greatly by the many un fortunate injuries last game tomorrow promising material premiere basketball game well played and thrilling in all departments cotillion committees for dance etc are appointed mrs richards holds open house soccer artists take final stand of season against lafayette eleven mrs c r richards enter tained at tea at her home tues day last from 4 to 6 p.m among those present were the wives of the faculty and bethlehem friends of mrs richards it has been the custom of mrs richards for the past three years to have open house for her coterie of friends on the second tuesday of each month and has always had a most generous response ; the oc aasion always proving a most enjoyable one wrestling tryouts beeore xmas large number of men are re porting at gym daily — prospects bright the sophomore cotillion met in drown hall last friday eve ning an ddiscussed probalities of having a dance in the latters part of february after the usual line of business the fol lowing committees were ap pointed patrons smith chair man martindale wilson adams ; decorating : ford chairman griffith richards harrier arnold dance cov ert chairman hayes lena willis bartoo music gisrael chairman nitchie haig phil lips oswald ; refreshments : ames chairman waesche lit tell ortlip crane programs mccord chairman nutting robinson lewis cannon following the meeting the executive committee consisting of the heads of committees and the officers of the society met to settle some minor details it is expected that the next meeting will bring forth a surprise sheridan reported wed 28 cagemen ready for opener tomorrow afternoon the le high soccer team will travel to easton to play the last and most important game of the sea son against lafayette coach carpenter will take a team with him which will give their best and will try to avenge the de feat of the football team earlier in the year lafayette have had a fairly successful season to date al though not victors in every game they have turned in quite a few victories the latest of whih was over swarthmore last saturday by the score of 2-0 coach morrison's dribblers seem ready for the encounter but there will be no let up in the practice the lehigh team has had a season marked with hard luck from beginning to the present time when the first call for candidates was issued it seemed that the brown and white would be able to boast of « championship outfit but injuries have handicapped carpenter's men greatly the coach has been working hard all season with the team and this last week he is holding daily scrimmages for the big encounter on satur day since carpenter first be come coach of alehigh soccer machine he has never yet lost to lafayette this year however lafayette will try very hard to stop lehigh's string of victories the lineups of both teams will in all probability be the same as on last saturday the team that played for the brown and white against state's champion eleven after getting off to a bad start worked in perfect un ison in the second half and it was only because of the wonder ful goal keeping of hellmick that prevented lehigh from scoring in the closing minutef of play he was kept busy billmeyer searing and mor rison are promising can didates on frosh five work done by alumni office short summary of the vast amount of work done in this busy place complete records on file little can be said for the mora vian combination because it was so completely outclassed by the brown and white it did play a stubborn game in the face of certain defeat it had a surpris ing courage lehigh was master of cere monies throughout the game for eight minutes the mora vians could not even penetrate lehigh's defense to an extent great enough to allow for a try for field goal in the first half the visitors tried twelve times for field goals every one of which failed the second half was but slightly better the mo ravians getting fourteen tries and completing two of them captain hess was the out standing player on the floor he played circles about his oppon ents and seemed able to net the ball from any angle on the floor gallagher was scarcely less dangerous so far as scoring was conceirned and while in the middle of the floor the mo ravians seldom won the toss in schaub and weinstein lehigh had a pair of formidable guards when weinstein was not on the heels of the mora vian forwards which was rare ly another of the brown and white wearers was close enough to muss up any play at tempted smith got away to a slow start but made a spectac ular finish the 68 points were about properly distributed hess getting 21 smith 16 gal lagher 13 weinstein 12 e schaub 4 and bond 2 lehigh had eight personal fouls called against her while the moravians suffered a total of eleven hamm guard and thatcher forward were taken from the game because each got the limit twenty-nine field goals were scored by the brown and white con on page 4 col 5 patty reports on the i f c interfraternity conference held at hotel pennsylva . nia during thanksgiv ing holidays lehigh has a great many in stitutions of which her sons are proud every undergraduate knows how her athletic teams have won her the sobriquet — doughty lehigh upperclass men at least know the names and something of the prestige won by outstanding men among her graduates educators all over the country recognize with respect the names of the facul ty members but there is one institution at lehigh which is so unique so active and so prominent among similar organ izations elsewhere that colleges large and small come to lehigh for advice and use lehigh as a pattern the institution is the alumni association of lehigh university an organization which is little more than a name to the majority of the under graduates yet which is insepar ably bound up with almost ev ery phase of undergraduate life at lehigh hardly a week goes by without a letter being receiv ed in the alumni office from some other college which is try ing to get their alumni body or ganizer along the lines so suc cessfully accomplished at le high the alumni office formerly in con on page 2 col 7 lehigh's basketball team opened its season wednesday evening when it decisively de feated the moravian college team in a game in which the plucky visitors were out-classed the final score of 68-10 was rolled up by speedy footwork accurate passing and superior maneuvering on the part of the brown and white players the game was not a minute old before earl schaub opened lehigh's account for the season with a field goal after massing a free toss this field goal was followed almost immediately by another by captain hess a third was netted by gallagher again this lead mellicke mora vian center pitted one convert ed foul so that the score at the end of five minutes stood 6-1 lehigh soon demonstrated her superiority on the offense two-point tallies were being registered at will while the de fensive playing held the mora vians to their lone tally until late in the first half when thatcher forward and mel licke added two more free throws after ten minutes of fast playing lehigh led with a score of 14-1 and at the end of the first half this total had been advanced to 31-3 captain hess and his team mates came back at the start of the second half with an assault which bowled over the disheart ened moravians the score was steadily advancing under the unerring aim of captain hess and gallagher so that after ten minutes of playing the lead wa3 increased to 45-5 it was dur ing this period nine minutes after the second half opened to be exact that mellicke dropped the first field goal for the mora vians during the remainder of the jgame the moravians now weary as well as disheartened played tenaciously but unavail ingly they did however add five points to their score thru roger's field goal two convert ed fouls by mellicke and one by childs substituting for thatch er who was removed for per sonal fouls smith at this point in the game took the leadership of le high's relentless attack and in less than a minute on three successive toss-ups scored three field goals these he followed up with two more in quick suc cession he had reached his most threatening speed when carl schaub substituted for him bond in place of gal lagher and qualco for earl schaub joined captain hess in the closing minutes of play in the last ten minutes of play le high rolled up 23 points as the demonstration of bas ketball this game was not all that could be desired lehigh was fast accurate and played with surprising teamwork but it has room for improvement the regular meeting of the inter-fraternity council was held on monday evening de cember bth in drown hall with president callow presiding the reports of the various outstanding committees were submitted j waltman chair man of the social committee re ported a small loss on the two tea dances which were held dur ing the football season walt man also reported that he was working on some very good plans along the lines of getting the various fraternities into closer connection with each other along this line it was suggested that the different groups have exchange dinners con on page 4 col 6 in preparation for the first game the freshman team has been working out with several of the teams that are to be rep resented in the inter-fraternit league this is excellent prac tice for both teams and the frosh become accustomed to playing against strange teams coach bartlett emphasizes the fact that during the season he will use many different combin ations of men and no player is ever certain of his position he does not cut his squad but any man can work his way to the front by steadiness and consis tent good work the frosh will make their first appearance on saturday afternoon at two-thirty when they meet bethlehem prep in no sense is this game merely a starter for the yearlings as prep has perhaps as good a team as the freshman will have to face their five possesses good size and the men play to gether as though a veteran team a speedy forward and a clever back guard should cause the freshmen much trouble as they showed up very well in their practice game against the varsity last saturday on the freshman squad scholz swartzstein talbert and brady have shown up well at forwards searing and sweitzer have gone well at cen ter while zerbe and bruning are both strong guards as the team is subjected to change without notice no definite line up can be given but these men all stand a good chance to start off the season for the class of 1928 the beaux arts club held their monthly meeting at cop pee hall last monday evening there was a very good turn out in spite of the rainy weather and in addition to the many stu dents present there were sev eral professors in attendance also the speaker of the evening was prof gipson the head of the history department prof gipsons talk dealt with the psy chological elements affecting the downfall of the southern con federacy in the civil war he spent some time in showing how environment produced cer tain types of leaders and gave many interesting side lights on the lives of jefferson davis robert e lee johnson beaure gard and other leadersin the war several interesting points were brought out by prof gip son among which was the fact that the south was not really united until after the war had progressed some time also that general lee would have accept ed peace long before it really was made possible by his defeat the meet was presided over by president gorgas head of the beaux arts club and an open discussion followed prof gip son's interesting talk the firjst cut in the mustard and cheese chorus was made wednesday night december 5 at which ime twenty-eight men were picked these men were chosen from the large squad which has been at work since early fall practicing the vari ous dance steps which will be used for the spring perfor mance the final cut in the squad will be made after the mid-year examinations all those who have not as yet re ported and who desire to try out for chorus work are asked to report december 12 at 7:30 in drown hall the chorus of the mustard and cheese show promises to be even better this year than it was last many of the new men have excellent ability along this line so that this phase of the spring show promises to be well taken care of the play committee has been handicapped due to the fact that only one scenario was handed in by december 1 which date had been et as the close of the com petition two other scenarios however were later submitted one of which was worked out by the play committee the three plays were submit ted to the entire club at their regular meeting on december 10 at 7 30 in drown hall at which time it was decided to ac cept the scenaria written by the committee this was due to the greater elasticity of the plot and development in the scenes this play which is entitled russian around presents fine possibilities for such a musical comedy as the club is desirous of putting on this year brief ly the play is in two acts the first scene is laid in switzerland and the plot surrounds two am erican students who are travel ing in europe so that they are in every sense of the word russian around they natural ly are mixed up in some deep in trigue which then of course brings in a beautiful russian princess a sturdy villian and some good comedy the amer ican intent on getting to the bot tom of the whole affair next go to russia where they are found at the beginning of the second act in the hall of & large castle the second act also gives play for some more russian around and as usual the plot ters are foiled the americans triumph and a happy ending is assured in the marriage of the pretty russian girl this is only a very sketchy outline of the scenario but is presents remarkable possibili ties for almost any kind of tal ent that the college has it is sincerely hoped by the club members that all students who have any ability whatsoever along the acting line should re port at the first cau for the cast the mustard and cheese club is strictly a lehigh organiza tion and as such it is dependent con on page 4 col 4 the wrestling room in taylor gymnasium presents a very busy aspect these days with large numbers of men reporting to practice daily in fact the largest number of men ever out for a wrestling team at lehigh have reported this year making it necessary to use every avail able inch of space in the wrest ling room in order that the men may have the proper space in which to work the first match of the season is with princeton at princeton on the seventeenth of january and as the tigers always turn out a strong team the lehigh wrestlers are work ing hard in order that they may have a team capable of defeat ing princeton by that time coach bill sheridan reported on wednesday afternoon for the first time and showed the men a number of new holds and sev eral other important things under his supervision it is ex pected that the team will round into shape rapidly several ad ditional men are trying out for ass't manager namely peter son covert mccord and terry the frosh wrestlers are com ing along very rapidly but there is a great need for heavy weights it was hoped that more men of this class would turn out after football season was over but so far very few have done so the frosh have a regular schedule this year their first meet being with lib erty high school on the ninth of january preliminary tryouts will be held more than likely be fore the out for a wrestling team at lehigh have reported this year making it necessary to use every avail able inch of space in the wrest ling room in order that the men may have the proper space in which to work the first match of the season is with princeton at princeton on the seventeenth of january and as the tigers always turn out a strong team the lehigh wrestlers are work ing hard in order that they may have a team capable of defeat ing princeton by that time coach bill sheridan reported on wednesday afternoon for the first time and showed the men a number of new holds and sev eral other important things under his supervision it is ex pected that the team will round into shape rapidly several ad ditional men are trying out for ass't manager namely peter son covert mccord and terry the frosh wrestlers are com ing along very rapidly but there is a great need for heavy weights it was hoped that more men of this class would turn out after football season was over but so far very few have done so the frosh have a regular schedule this year their first meet being with lib erty high school on the ninth of january preliminary tryouts will be held more than likely be fore the
