communication the board will not hold itself responsible for the sentiments expressed in communications to the editors of the brown and white : the warning which the students received in the last issue of the brown . and white from " a senior will undoubtedly create a great effect he hints darkly at deep political schemes and comes out with the bold assertion that schemers are trying to do away with lacrosse at lehigh he does not say whence he got this astound ing lot of information but never theless parades it boldly in print he winds up his article with the statement that if a team has got to go why not the track team alarmists are everywhere but an alarmist should always be care ful to keep his views to himself unless he is perfectly sure of his ground iri reference to his first statement about designs being at present well under way to blot out lacrosse i would assure you that as yet no designs have been brought to the notice of the lehigh univer sity athletic committee in the second place i would say that the committee itself has never given the matter a thought has never considered the advisability of dropping either and for the pres ent has no intention of doing so thirdly in regard to his statements concerning the dropping of the track team i would say that it would seem a great pity to drop a team whose expenses for the season amount to about 75 and whose receipts are about 175 finally it can be seen by all this that a senior though evidently writing with the best intentions had no knowledge of the subject whatever and in the future i would advise all such to be perfectly sure of their ground before they so commit themselves j w thurston chairman l u a c .«. a mixed team played the fresh men a game of baseball on satur day morning resulting in a score of 8 to 6 in favor of the latter football lehigh 25 ; rutgers o ■the first game of the season was played on saturday afternoon re suiting in the above score emi nently satisfactory to tbe big crowd present the day was perfect though a trifle warm for the play ers lehigh was first on the fieldi followed about ten minutes later by rutgers the intervening time was pleasantly passed in listening to the guying of the freshmen by the sophomores and watching the studied indifference of the latter at 3.20 time was called rut gers getting choice of goals and taking the 1 west one fitzgerald kicked off for twenty yards walt ers catching on the next plays rutgers could only advance the ball 2 yards and it went to lehigh on the pass there was some off side play and lehigh got ten yards barnard quickly advanced the ball 10 yards and van duyne followed with 5 more then gunsolus made 10 but lost the ball on a fumble pool made 4 yards and walters was dropped in his tracks then rutgers tried a funny trick after several attempts to under stand her own signals by means of which ryno made 10 yards through the centre pool tried next but couldn't move it ryno tried his trick again and gained 5 then he fumbled and it was lehigh's ball on the 15 yard line barnard car ried it forward for 8 yards trafton 6 more and gunsolus pushed it over the line for the first touch down time 7 minutes fitz failed to kick a difficult goal and the score stood 4 to 0 in lehigh's favor on the line-up pool kicked to trafton who fumbled the ball but dropped on it in time to save it van duyne got around the end for five yards and in the scrimmage barnard had his ankle twisted but resumed play fitz then kicked and holderness got the ball which went outside the line a gain of 25 yards fitz kicked again for 40 yards mason catching on the next downs rutgers could not ad vance the ball and it went back to lehigh van duyne trafton barnard and thurston each made steady gains and time was called for the first half with the ball only 8 yards from rutgers goal the second half began with keys catching pool's kick-off then gunsolus broke through the line for 60 yards and a touchdown time 20 seconds fitzgerald kicked an easy goal ; score 10 to 0 against rutgers on the next kick keys again caught and covered 3,0 yards before he fell nevins who had taken barnard's place then made 5 yards and soon after 25 more and in 6 minutes thurston made the third touchdown from which fitz kicked goal ; score 16 to 0 senior took van duyne's place and made a gain of 6 yards the brown and while a t o 6 lehigh university south bethlehem pa september 30 1895 vol 111 then fitz dropped a pretty goal from the 25 yard line and the score stood 21 to 0 lehigh again got the ball and without losing it made another touchdown in four or five downs from which no goal resulted ; score 25 to 0 the ball was put into play again but time was called in a few minutes more and score stood as above the teams lined up as follows : calendar monday sept 30 7.15 p m agora meets in christmas hall tuesday oct 1 6.30 p m banjo club meets in eagle hotel bethlehem wednesday oct 2 12.30 p m senior class meeting in eng lish room packer hall 11.30 a m to 1 p m r junior elections in christmas hall 7.30 p m meeting 96 epi tome board at phi gamma delta house notices elections will be held by tm junior class for the offices of presi dent and historian on wednesday next from 11.30 till 1 in christ mas hall executive committee there will be a meeting of the 96 epitome board on wednesday evening at 7.30 at the phi gamma delta house all attend as the business manager wishes to present a report w s ayars ed in-chief senior class meeting the special meeting of the sen ior class called for thursday sep tember 26 was held in the english room packer hall at 12.30 p m discussion was immediately opened regarding the amendment which had been offered at a previous meeting the amendment to the constitution was to the effect that every man in the class should be allowed a vote irrespective of the question of dues after consider able discussion a vote by ballot was taken which resulted in the defeat of the amendment by a large majority only those men voted on the question who had paid their class dues since their freshman year up to within two months of date after the above vote had been taken there was an attempt made to offer an amendment allow ing a man a vote if his junior dues had been paid and also another to give him the same privilege if he would pay two months of his sen ior dues in advance as the con stitution provides that an amend ment must be posted a week before being acted upon and as the elec tions occur before that week is up these attempts were abandoned the elections for class officers were held this morning memorial services the memorial mass for charles becerra were held at the church of the holy infancy on , • the 28th inst the eev philip mc enroe who for many years has been pastor of the church celebrated the requiem high mass the kelm edi mass was beautifully sung 1 un der the direction of prof graber by mrs degnan and miss sullijvan assisted by the choir there was a large attendance among whom were many of the instructor's ;
