those of presi dent drown professor charles l thornburg professor wm c thayer and dr alexander mac farlane lecturer in charge of the department of electrical engineer ing among the instructors h s houskeeper john s siebert wm h powell e e fisher and f r gibbs are replaced by j h klinck h s webb,j 11 . qgburn and the following assistants : s s clark nathaniel thurlow and wm 11 hoffman the names of all students appear without the unpopular asterisk in 1897 and thereafter arithmetic will be omitted from the requirements for admission to all courses and the ex aminations for admission to the freshman class in the school of technology will include solid geom etry a new six years course is offered to students who ; wish to combine a literary with a technical course during the junior and senior years they will be permitted to substitute technical for literary studies receiving the literary de gree at the end of the four years and the technical degree upon completion of the work from one and a half to two years later among the important changes is the insertion of physical laboratory work in the sophomore year of all courses except the classical the register is of the usual size and not much changed in general ap pearance senior m.e shop visits the senior mechanicals took possession of philadelphia on fri day and saturday of last week for their first shop visit of the present term friday morning they started out by visiting the famous baldwin locomotive works in the erecting shops of which may be seen loco motives designed for nearly every nation on the face on the earth giant locomotives for eussia hob nobbing with miniature ones for japan thence they proceeded to the plant of sellers & co a stone's throw distant here the sellers automatic gear-cutting ma chines were inspected this ma chine has been brought to such a state of perfection that all that is required is that the casting be properly adjusted and the cutter will turn out the finished gear without further attention six of these machines are operated by one man much interest was taken in the cast-iron lathe tools used here the manufacture of which is a secret of the establishment in the afternoon the places visited were the shops of pedrick & ayer and the huge works of bement miles & co the former firm makes a specialty of milling machines of various forms and in its shop are also many ingenious contrivances worked by compressed air which replaces steam as a motive power wherever possible saturday forenoon was devoted to cramps shipyards their va rious machine shops were visited and the engine rooms of the u s s massachusetts now being fin lehigh university south bethlehem pa january 30 1896 vol 111 ished received a large share of attention the party in charge of instruc tor knox returned to bethlehem saturday evening no 32 the brown and white sociedad-hispano-ame ricano at the last meeting the follow ing officers were elected for the ensuing year : president henry newton 97 vice president b a mercenano 97 treasurer j a de obaldia 98 ;
