a meeting of the junior class was called to order by president johnson on tuesday at 12.30 after the approval of the min utes of the previous meeting the report of the treasurer was re ceived a report not very com plimentary to the class spirit of 97 after some discussion it was de cided on motion to retain the old class cut in the epitome the class supper committee presenting no report the meeting adjourned . — i *. ,, — _ articles for competition have been accepted from j h 98-1 ; fleur de lis 98-1 ; c m a.,98 2 ; excelsior 99-1 ; keno 97-1 «. there will be a meeting of the agora on next saturday afternoon feb 15 at 3 o'clock in christmas hall to select a question for the lehigh lafayette debate pee side nt minstrel show the sale of seats for the minstrel show is now open and all the students in college should avail themselves of the opportunity and procure one from present indi cations it looks as if the entertain iment next saturday evening will be first class in every particular the end men in the first part are all good and their jokes are almost entirely local and full of good hits the songs are numerous and have been chosen with great care among the best are " the leader of de company b and the new bully in the first part in addition there will be bones playing by johnson 97 and pennington 97 in the second part come the specialties there will be skirt dancing by marshall 97 adams 97 and farnum 99 ; tumbling by mr smith and put nam 97 whistling by brown 97 and hillman 98 ; a duet by c b pettinos and j g lehman ; a selection by the banjo club ; a musical recital by worstall 96 and last but not least p j mcmahon of south bethlehem in his famous songs pittsburg lehigh club dinner the dinner of the pittsburg le high club which was held in pitts burg last friday evening in honor of dr drown was in every way a complete success the banquet was held at the duquesne hotel in its large banquet hall which was tastefully decorated with lehigh colors all of the arrangements for the dinner were perfect and during its course it was frequently enlivened with lehigh songs and cheers one of the songs which was very good is a new le high song that was written especi ally for the occasion by w a cornelius 89 after the cigars were lighted chas l taylor 76 assumed the role of toast master the honors of which he did most gracefully throughout the en tire evening the first speaker he introduced was pi li mcclintic 88 who is the president of the pittsburg lehigh club and who made a glowing speech of welcome to dr drown and to all others present the next toast was that of " the lehigh university which was re sponded to by president drown in his remarks he spoke of the in fluence of college life in the forma tion of character and said a college course failed of its purpose if it simply stored the mind with useful information he was a firm be liever in mental training in educa tion as opposed to the acquiring of mere facts and rules the world wants in its educated men he said those trained in accurate thinking who distinguished sharply the limi tations of their knowledge who were able to conduct an investiga tion into the unknown who avere honest in thought and modestly self-reliant we are surrounded by great living,throbbing problems in our politics and our industries which we must train our college men to help solve the tendency in modern education should be to fit young men for the environment in which we are to live president drown spoke also of recent changes in the faculty of lehigh univer sity and of the great activity of the members of the faculty in the re cent publications of many new books and professional papers the next toast was that of the " alumni which was very happily responded to by 11 a porterfield 83 in the place of bishop avhite head who at the last moment was called away the next toast re sponded to was by engineer j p s lawrance of the united states navy lehigh 73 in the course of his remarks he urged the im portance of the bill now before congress relating to the increase of the engineer corps in the navy under the proposed plan the grad uates of technical colleges whose course of instruction maybe con sidered satisfactory by the navy are made eligible for appointment the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa thursday februaky 13 1896 vol 111 jsto 36 the wind-up will be a clever little farce entitled " the under taker's daughter the characters will be taken by c e pettinos given 96 ho well 96 marshall 97 and hillrnan 98 the beth lehem orchestra which has just been organized and which is com posed of the best musical talent in town will play no one should forget the date and all who want good seats should go early and procure them calendar thursday feb 18 — meeting of m e section of engineering society physical laboratory 7 p m meeting of electrical en gineering society physical laboratory 7 p m meeting of civil section of engineering society 7 p m friday feb 14 — meeting of chess club in lounging room 8 p m saturday feb 15 — minstrel show given by the glee and banjo clubs examinations in all mathe matics • ■■■'" sunday feb 16 — bible class christmas hall 3.30 p m ,!/ regular meeting of chris-1 1 tian association in christmas 1 hall 6.15 p m subject — the only safe leader ex 33 15 ;
