junior c e trip to reading • on saturday morning the junior civils under instructors wilcox and hoffman inspected the sewage disposal plant of bead ing pa the sewage is received through a 48-inch sewer and passes through coke filters the refuse is removed dried in kilns and after wards burnt under the boilers the water is pumped at the station and carried to a filter bed where it is purified by aeration and by a passage through two beds of sand after being purified it is run into the schuylkiil river as this method of sewage dis posal will soon be required in every city the visit was very in structive a noticeable feature at the plant was the absence of any offensive smell mr h a deery engineer in charge for the pennsylvania sew age disposal company carefully explained the details of the plant kline and symington have gone to the training table baseball lehigh 20 ; rutgers 8 a baseball day was yesterday though perhaps not quite hot enough to suit the most enthusias tic fans it was evident from the start that it was just the kind of weather lehigh had been waiting for and she went into the game with a rush that meant nothing short of victory about 150 loyal supporters took the ride to bitters ville and had gotten themselves in a good humor when the game was called promptly at 4 o'clock the rutgers boys made their appear ance shortly before the hour and after a little preliminary practice took the field with carman up for first batter his response was a beautiful three-bagger which he repeated the second time up this was only the beginning of a batting streak which our boys developed early in the game and kept up till the last man was out in the third inning especially was pool jumped on when lehigh touched him up for four hits and aided by errors on rutgers part scored six runs only once did things look at all doubtful when after pitching a splendid game senior let up in the eighth and four hits were made off him but good fielding prevented more than three runs chasmar's work in centre-field was of a gilt edge order he having seven chances and accepting all of them the men show marked improvement for their week's practice the base run ning being very creditable the game began with carman at the bat for lehigh he started off brilliantly with a three-bagger to deep centre field snyder followed with a fly to yandyck carman scoring after the ball was caught lowe was retired on a foul fly to voorhees and senior ended the half inning by a hot-liner to pitcher parrot batted first for rutgers and was quickly retired at first on a liner to senior pool went out on a fly to left field rosencranz got his base on balls but was retired at second by a pretty throw by carman leaving scudder at the bat in the second inning lehigh was retired in one two three order b grace hit to short stop and was re tired at first w grace succeeded in reaching first on rosencranz's error but was retired at second upon attempting to steal gannon hit to pitcher retiring the side in rutgers half of the second in ning they succeeded in scoring two runs all due to errors scudder came first with a single mohn followed with a hit to lowe which he fielded to grace at second retir ing scudder mason hit to snyder whose wild throw to lowe car man's overthrow and lowe's muff allowed mohn to score and mason to reach second van dyck hit tc lowe and reached first on his error the senior c e.s have taken up the subject of engineering con tracts and specifications under professor merriman mason scoring vandyck was re tired on attempting to steal second strickland ended the inning by a fly to chasmar in the third inning lehigh took a brace and before they were re tired had succeeded in putting six more runs to their credit chas mar started the inning with a hit to centre field and reached second on monn's overthrow eeed also made a single and carman followed with his second three-bagger bring ing in chasmar and reed snyder went out on a fly to centre but carman reached home after the ball was caught lowe singled to left field and stole second coming in on the first baseman's failure to stop senior's hot grounder e grace hit to the out-field bringing
