monday afternoon the class of 96 observed its class day with ap propriate exercises the weather was all that could be desired and the attendance was probably the largest of any university exercise held on the campus at 2.30 o'clock the seniors hav ing formed at packer hall marched to the platform at the vine street entrance headed by the allentown band here they at once took seats at the tables and lighted the class pipes the program was opened with a selection by the band after which president laramy gave a short speech introducing mr bliem who gave the class toast they arose to drink to the toast which was followed by the class and college yells class secretary dessauer then called the class roll calling each man by his most familiar nick name the class poet,w s ayars then entertained the audience with a poem well written and suited to the occasion following the next piece by the band came the presentation oration by pool in a very able and amus ing way he exposed traits and pecularities of various members of the class just as he was intro duced a messenger boy gave him a package and a telegram the tele gram was from a hundred allen town friends " of w s ayars who having heard that he was not to be presented with a gift purchased and sent a beautiful piano whilden and dickerman were presented with a little " invention consisting of a double cone for the purpose of determining which has the better voice " kid ay res was presented with a step ladder to elevate himself enough to look into the mirror groverman received a deed to certain property in the south of allentown the location of which was minutely explained " buck " ayers received a " knox " hat on a string as a kind remembrance of machine design loomis of course was not disap pointed in receiving a yacht ; " phantom " is its name " jack " sesser and the " duke of maryborough " tripp received a little mule cart painted white and having red wheels the body it was told could be made to har monize with the wheels in one trip these are but a few of the pres ents president laramy then came for ward with the class cup and stated l\\c conditions of the contest this cup is to be presented to the first male child born to a 96 man the vote for the keeper of the cup un til claimed resulted in the election of j b given the class prophecy was given by dessauer in an amusing fashion he is on the planet mars and by continued on seventh page between 1838 and 1880 seventy colleges were founded in america university day the morning was cloudy but as the time for the commencement exercises drew near the weather became less threatening and at 10 o'clock the sun shone out brightly and the campus freshened by the rains of the past few days appeared to the visitors nearly in its old time beauty people began com ing to the packer memorial chapel early and when the graduating class entered at 10.30 every seat was filled promptly at the hour named j fred wolle began an organ voluntary the procession was headed by president t m drown and bishop n s eulison president of the board of trustees the former in an oxford cap and gown with a cap lined with the college col ors and the latter in full canonicals following them came chaplain worcester and the board of trus tees then the faculty instructors candidates for advanced degrees and members of the graduating class in the order given these i sons took their places upon a 3ed platform in the transept he scripture lesson was read by chaplain and prayer was offered bishop eulison after which sident drown introduced rob ert^edward laramy of bethlehem the second honor man in his class and the salutatorian mr laramy began his greeting by saying : the poet longfellow greeted the mem bers of his class at a reunion held when they were very old with these words : ' we about to die greet you in contrast with that class of 96 about to live greets you he then began an oration on citi zenship and quoting the saying that the prosperity of a country depends upon the sum of virtue sacrifice and devotion at its founda tion spoke of the noble qualities of | our revolutionary forefathers and the future outlook for the ameri can system of government he closed with an appeal to his class mates to live lives that should make them honored by all mr laramy retired to his seat admidst hearty applause the next orator was hobart bently avars of westerly r l who spokeupon true education he opened by saying that lehigh has done a gigantic thing for the class of 96 and made an earnest plea for education paying a warm tribute to lehigh training pluck and energy in the course of his ad dress mr avars spoke easily and pleasingly and retired amid ap plause after an organ voluntary edward williamson miller of bethlehem delivered an excellent oration on america's place in mining science he began by referring to the skill of the ancients in this field for many years this science went backward and it is only with in the past century that much has been done to develop it continued on third page lehigh university south bethlehem pa thursday june 18 1896 last doctor's degree class day vol 111 the brown and white commencement edition no 67 alumni meeting and lunch immediately after the commence iient exercises on wednesday ifternoon the members of the a.lumni association repaired to the gymnasium where a splendid lunch was partaken of after the lunch \ meeting was held in the lecture room of the chemical laboratory arch johnston 89 occupying the shair the minutes of the last meeting were dispensed with re ports of committees and secretary and treasurer were read and a vote of thanks was tendered the athletic sommittee for their faithful work during the past year much dis cussion followed in regard to the financial state of the athletic asso ciation it was decided that when the undergraduates show a proper disposition towards athletics the alumni association will consider the steps necessary to keep down the debt the officers elected for the ensuing year are as follows : president emmerich 82 ; vice presidents ronaldson 96 and meaker 75 ; honorary alumnus trustee lathrop 75 ; secretary and treasurer stoek,'b7 ; rogers ex 76 schaidt ex 77 and robinson ex ' 79 were elected to associate mem bership there being no further business the meeting adjourned june hop the hop tendered by the juniors to the graduating class on monday evening was one of the most bril liant and successful ones that have been given for years both in point of attendance and decorations the university colors were draped from the center of the roof of the gymnasium to points on the rail of the running track making a very pretty effect scattered amidst the decorations below were numerous lehigh flags and pen nants the most noticeable among these being the handsome lacrosse championship banner for 1895 it is hand-worked in white silk on brown satin with a lacrosse stick placed diagonally across the banner music was furnished by gardner & carey of philadelphia and re freshments by mrs hoppes the patronesses were mrs chas m dodson mrs c miner dodson mrs t m drown mrs b w frazier mrs f w leinbach,mrs r p linderman mrs e coppee mitchell mrs w b myers mrs w a robinson mrs e p wilbur the committee to whom the suc cess of the hop was due is 11 . s johnson chairman h l bell s r elliott b p roundey e r hannum a p jenks c f scott s p senior a h serrell h r van duyne the first degree awarded on wednesday was that of doctor of philosophy conferred upon her â– nan eugene kiefer who took the legree of analytical chemist in 1892 and master of science in 189-i both at lehigh university mr kiefer is an instructor in geology and lithology at the university and is the second man to receive the degree ph.d from lehigh uni versity the first being dr joseph w richards instructor in metall urgy mineralogy and blowpiping by action of the faculty taken sev eral months ago this degree is no longer offered by the university but mr kiefer had the greater part of his work for the doctorate completed before this action was taken and consequently has the well-earned distinction of being the second and last man to receive this degree mr kiefer's thesis was on " the action of certain alcohols on meta-diazo-benzene sulphonic acid and the action of the same alcohols on asym metric meta-diazo xylene-sulph onic acid the work was care fully done and is of a complete and exhaustive character besides investigating the action of the above named compounds under various conditions of pressure mr kiefer has discovered four new acids and has studied the acids and their derivatives he has prepared studied and described sixteen new compounds as a whole his thesis will make a valuable addition to the chemistry of the diazo-alcohol reaction the amount of material he has collected is the result of two years of constant work 93 class reunion the trienniel reunion of the class of 93 was held tuesday june 16 nearly twenty men were present at the business meeting in the afternoon it was decided that the next reunion should be held at the end of another three years the officers elected were : president knox ; secretary and treasurer heck ' several claims for the class cup were entered ; that of mr godshall who has a son nearly two years old was successful although the actual presentation was deferred till later in the evening the banquet was held at the eagle hotel and wns enjoyed by all present informal toasts and reminiscences of college days filled the time till a late hour those in town on wednesday were adams atkins boyd dech durfee evans enright godshall heck knox a s maurice os borne patterson parkhurst peck randolph saulsbury smith shel don soleliac taylor a senior honorary society the " sorcophagus whose membership is limited to fourteen has been formed at amherst
