98 class meeting president wood called a meeting of the freshman class last friday afternoon in the drawing room on the second floor of packer hall the object of the meeting was to decide whether 98 should attempt to carry canes or not ; but it was almost unanimously voted down the freshmen have been influenced in this decision entirely by the opinions of upper class men it was moved and carried that the officers who were elected pro tern in september be re-elected perma nent officers these officers are : wood president ; gass vice-presi dent ; bowdle secretary and treas urer after hearing from president wood on the difficulties of re moving the negative from the house on packer avenue a move ment to adjourn was made and carried football reveiw of the situation by our special correspondent for the past ten days the news papers have been full of conjectures upon the probability of a game being arranged between harvard and princeton this year there can be little doubt that captain trenchard has received a letter of refusal from captain emmons captain emmons reply has caused considerable unfavorable comment from outsiders and much regret at both cambridge and princeton ; but that he has pursued the proper course and acted in accordance with harvard's best interests there can be little doubt when one considers that he has not only devoted much time and thought to the subject himself but has had the advice of such able men as brooks cumnock and delano the larger colleges have each played several games and have tnereby in a way given us some chance poor as it may be to judge of their relative strength at yale there will most likely be fewer changes than at any of the larger institutions it is possible that she will line up precisely as she did last year ; however it is more than likely that armstrong's place at left will be occupied by dewitt he is a heavy back a strong runner and an excellent line breaker and will barring accidents end the season with a great reputa tion he has several times been compared to that grand half-back everett lake of harvard there is also a little doubt about quarter a guard and possibly in regard to the tackles there are three men making a determined fight for quarter — morris adee and fincke morris barring accidents will fill the position but at present he and adee are laid up and fincke is making good use of his opportu nity if mccrea expects to fill his old place he will have to work for he is being pushed pretty hard by several — brown,chadwick and cross the tackles will be moderately sure of their position providing murphy shows up but any neglect on their part is risky for in murry young hickok and rodgers they have dangerous rivals hickok is a brother of the guard and comes from st paul where he played on the school team murry and kodgers are from and over's famous team of last year where the former played guard and the latter tackle and also captained the team they are both very promising particularly the latter butter worth's eyes are still bothering him and at present his place is being filled by jerrems last year's substitute lieddington the baseball player and litton litton another andover man will be remembered as the lad who so coolly dropped a goal from the field continued on second page founder's day hop the founder's dayllop is a thing of the past but those present will long rernber the occasion with pleasure all the arrangements had been carefully made and reflected great credit upon the committee all in all it was one of the pleas antest dances ever given by the college men the patronesses were mrs george p allen mrs weston dodson mrs b w frazier mrs garrett b linderman mrs e coppee mitchell mrs robert p eathbun and mrs warren a wilbur the committee was ayres 95 hopkins 95 dickerman 96 hale 97 and wood 98 the intercollegiate cross country race has not yet been arranged ow ing to some of the colleges in the association not having replied to the general notice yale 34 lehigh o the rain last saturday was a great drawback as the grounds were so slippery that the men could not get a firm enough foothold to withstand the heavy weight of their oppo nents yale's playing in both the defensive and offensive was very good while lehigh's was rather ragged the line did well in the defensive but was not properly helped by the backs while in the offensive very few gains were made against yale's strong tackling the game was called at 3.15 p m and two twenty-minute halves were played yale had the kick-off and barnard caught but failed to gain after unsuccessful attempts to advance the ball fitzgerald punted and the ball was yale's on their five-yard line then by a series of beautiful plays in which thorne was especially prominent yale advanced the ball without even losing it to a touchdown which mills made on the next kick-off the yale backs fumbled the ball and it was lehigh's ball on yale's 5-yard line yale got the ball on four downs and a beau tiful run by thorne of 45 yards took the ball out of danger this was the nearest lehigh came to scpring on a fumble by lehigh's backs on the kick-off yale got the ball on lehigh's 10-yard line thorne was forced over after some hard rushing on the next kick-off butterworth ran about 20 yards behind good interference and a moment later made another beau tiful run of 40 yards to a touch down time was soon after called for the first half without more scoring the second half started with a long kick-off into yale's territory and for about five minutes it looked as if the game would be more even ly contested but on a fumble fincke got the ball and having a clear field made a touchdown on the kick off butterworth was well downed and soon after kicked but the ball was fumbled and it was yale's on lehigh's 15-yard line on the next play budd was hurt and thurston took his place mills then ploughed through for another touchdown this was the only goal that hick ok failed to kick on the kick-off football practice the varsity practice game on thursday was made especially in teresting by the presence of two ex captains ordway and mcclung these men probably two of the best football players lehigh ever had and also coach heffelfinger aided the scrub in putting up one of the hardest practice games ever seen on our field the scrub was eager to score the varsity deter mined that it should not ordway mcclung and lieffelfinger coached the scrub with vim ; captain traf ton urged his varsity players to their utmost the result was a goal from the field for the varsity and a touchdown for the scrub the large crowd of students who were watching the practice cheered with enthusiasm when ordway with old-time skill made the touchdown it was the best possible practice that the team could have had before its game with yale the two lower classes at state college have organized football teams and will play a contest game sometime during the month which will take theplaoe of the cane rush between the two classes lehigh men are very much wor ried over the fact that she may be come co-educational — college top ics the three largest universities in the united states are university of michigan 2,800 ;
