proeessor william's lecture the tau beta pi society will in augurate their lecture course on saturday evening in the physical laboratory at 8 o'clock professor williams the founder of the soci ety will lecture on " glaciation and its results in eastern pennsylva nia this subject has been stud ied by the lecturer during the past two years and over 600 photo graphs have been taken illustrative of its different manifestations the glacial lake named after judge packer will be described and its position on a geological map pointed out several recent discoveries will be discussed in cluding many points of local inter est elias ward who trained the pennsylvania crew several years ago will probably be re-engaged to fill the vacancy caused by the res ignation of george woodruff lehigh song book a committee from the mustard and cheese are now making a col lection of lehigh songs which they intend to publish in book form some time next term the only collection of songs ever attempted before was a small pam phlet gotten up by the lehigh burr in 1887 this simply con tained the words of a few of the best known songs with no attempt at completeness the book now being written will be a complete collection of distinctive lehigh songs including cremation songs and those used by the glee club and by the mustard and cheese it will be very sim ilar to the princeton and yale song books only smaller contain ing from fifty to sixty songs with the words and music possibly it may be illustrated with some of the university buildings it is the earnest wish of the com mittee that the alumni as well as the whole student body assist them as far as possible in this work by sending any songs or music that have been used at lehigh to any of the following committee w w coleman 95 w s murray 95 w g whilden 96 the universities of michigan and chicago hope to make their annual thanksgiving day game correspond in importance to the princeton yale game in the east harpers will shortly publish a new book by walter camp entitled " football facts and figures the lehigh university dr hyde's article in the uni versity magazine the first number of the ameri can university magazine j'usi issued contains the first of a series of papers descriptive of the lehigh university written by prof e m hyde the sketch begins with an account of the life of the founder it was in the fall of 1864 that asa packer first expressed to the late bishop stevens his intention to give 500,000 to the founding of some educational institution for the intellectual and moral improve ment of the young men of the lehigh valley one year later henry coppe'e ll d was made president of the university and entrusted with the details of its organization the first day of july witnessed the laying of the corner stone of packer hall and the institution was formally open ed on saturday the first of sep tember 1866 " the courses contemplated four years of study two years of which would be the same for all being named respectively the first and second class while the men in the two years passed in the separate schools were known as junior and senior schoolmen upon the com pletion of these years the student elected one of the five courses then provided : general literature civ il engineering mechanical engi neering mining and metallurgy analytical chemistry ; and at the end of two years received the de gree appropriate to the course " the tuition fees were 90 per annum in the first and second classes and 100 in the special schools there were a number of scholarships established and a preparatory class was maintained for a few years during the early period of the history of lehigh a number of rooms in christmas and saucon halls were rented for use as dormitories and a regular boarding house was provided under the direction of the faculty this space was needed for other purposes in time and the dormitory system was done away with the sayre observatory was given to the university by robert 11 sayre esq of south bethle hem in 1868 and equipped by him with a six-inch equatorial telescope a siderial clock a zenith telescope and a field transit in 1875 dr coppe'e resigned the presidency and in the following year the rev john mcdowell leavitt d d was elected to that office which lie held until 1880 during his incumbency several important changes were made in the scheme of instruction and the old names for the classes were re placed by the those in use in other american colleges the classical department was opened in 1877 and the library building was electrical engineer ing society the electrical engineering so ciety held their regular meeting in the physical laboratory on tues day evening owing to the excite ment attendant upon election night the number of members present was small the meeting was called to order by president brown the calling of the roll and reading of the minutes of the previous meet ing followed mcnutt 97 97 was elected an associate member as sophomore electricals are eligible to associate membership under the head of new business the society decided to empower the president to appoint two critics for each paper to be read before the society the duty of these critics is to in form themselves upon the subjects presented before the meetings in order to help along the discussion of these subjects gibson 7 95 gave an interesiing talk upon " practical points in ar mature insulation he showed how mica is treated in order to make it an economical insulator and explained how it is employed in armature insulation consider able attention was also given to the subject of testing insulation and several ways were described in which this is done delluff 95 followed with an article upon " return circuits in electric railways different sys tems were discussed and compared as to their relative cost and ef ficiency he showed that the best return circuit is that in which no supplementary wires are used and in which the rails are connected together by short and heavy copper bands in conclusion the various requirements for a good return cir cuit were enumerated owing to the lateness of the hour the paper by blehl 95 upon alternating currents was con siderably shortened the different styles of alternating machines were revived after which a vote of south bethlehem £ a november 8 1894 thanks was given to the above members for their papers and the society then adjourned vol 11 no 17 erected about this time at a cost of one hundred thousand dollars mr packer died on the 10th of may 1879 and the trustees desir ing to honor him set apart the second thursday of october in each year to be called founder's day to be observed with appropriate services and a suitable address judge packer gave over three millions of dollars to the university the article is illustrated with cuts of packer hall christmas hall saucon hall the say re observatory interior and exterior views and handsome cuts of the library and its interior there are also pictures of the founder of dr coppce bishop stevens bish op howe bishop rulison hon eckley b coxe and charles hartshorne the frontispiece is the magnificent view looking north from the university campus the thanksgiving day game there has been some talk lately of having the cornell-lehigh foot ball game played at new york in stead of at ithaca this would be very advantageous from a financial point of view but unfortunately as matters now stand it seems to be impossible the managers of both teams want the game at new york but i here is a great deal of opposition to this by president schuman of cornell and other members of the faculty the cornell men have only thanksgiving day for a holiday and consequently those who went to new york could not get back in time for recitations friday morning moreover cornell has scarcely had a good game on her own grounds this season and many of the alumni living near ithaca as well as the students have been looking for ward to the game with lehigh although the matter has not been definitely settled the game will in all probability be played at ithaca calendar thursday nov 8 classical club dr hyde's office 2 p m banjo club rehearsal
