- line continued on page 4 col 2 the sword and crescent sr honorary society saturday chose l a p williams as the man to fill the vacancy in its ranks this vacancy occurred when storer football captain elect flunked out of college last year and did not return this fall tap-day as the day is called is an old custom of the sword and crescent society the man or men qualified for admission are selected and called from the stands between the halves of a football game the candidates have a brown and white band pinned on their sleeves the in itiations follow at a later date the society consists of fifteen members from the senior class and this number is never exceed ed the candidates are chosen because they are the men who in the judgment of the graduat ing members have done the most for lehigh during their collegiate career to be a mem ber of this society is considered one of the high honors in the university there was an innnovation this year in the form of new hats the so-called taxi cab hats of last year were not sat isfactory and so a change was made this year the new white caps with the initials and the insignia on the front are a great improvement and are more appropriate for a senior society lap williams as the new candidate is familiarly called has been active in many college activities he is now advertis ing manager of the burr and manager of lacrosse as well as one of the class officers the lehigh soccer team play ed the naval academy team at annapolis on saturday after noon the struggle resulted in a tie each side having scored one goal the game was nip and tuck from beginning to end each team fighting to the limit in its efforts to win the halves were cut down to thirty minutes so as not to interfere with the navy-perm state football game and for the same reason no ex tra periods were played the navy soccerites made their point near the end of the first half the goal was scrimmag ed rather than kicked into the goal but the actual boot was by stimmer the outside left of the blue and gold after navy's scoring lehigh seemed to have the edge on their opponents rice hauman and pineda con tinually raced the ball down the field only to have it kicked out of danger when about to score the half ended with the score still in the middies favor a few minutes after the sec ond half started hauman took a corner kick and placed it in front of the goal but more vim lehigh con tinued to batter away at the navy's goal at one time forc ing three consecutive come kicks until it seemed that a further score must be made the middies defense was ca pable of holding the visitor however and no further scoring was done outside of a minor injury to the knee of one of the navy men continued on page 4 col 2 lehigh is assured of a good mustard and cheese show this year because of the great inter est that is being shown by the members of the student body who are in competition for posi tions in the cast of the annual show dancing rehearsals are being held every wednesday night between the hours of sev en-thirty and nine o'clock at drown hall the ambitious performers must go through many weeks of practice and drill before the production is ready as the steps are very in tricate and dainty no cut has yet been made in the dancing class but it is expected that within a short time the number will be reduced as there is a great deal of work in connection with the pro duction of such a show it is ne cassary that there is a large business staff to look after such matters w m metten is man ager of this year's show and he needs more men to enter com petition for the assistant man agership the competition is conducted much as the other mangerial competitions and the offer is open to members of the sophomore class all men de siring to try out for addresses freshmen on the early history of lehigh dr henry s drinker ad a 5-0 score saturday gave lehigh a victory over muhlen berg's best and tho the car dinal and grey eleven came to taylor field primed for a vic tory they were defeated in their efforts to cross the lehigh chalk line and were sent home scoreless a safety in the third period and a field goal in the fourth constituted the margin of le high superiority in the strug gle coach baldwin's warriors who tied princeton and rut gers were unable to cross the opposing goal line and earned victory by rushing the ball for eighteen first downs compared to four by their opponents the only goal line crossing was done in reverse willingham muh lenberg fullback went over af ter hess kicked a punt in the third period it was the wrong goal-line unfortunately for him and his pals and he im mediately tried to retrace his steps but went out of bounds behind the goal-line and those two points were enough to win not until the waning moments of the fourth period did the score come honey lewin who failed twice on dropkick tries in the first half had a per fect kick from muhlenberg's 20 yard line right in front of the posts he did marshall they started the game with a dash and a fury which held lehigh even in ground gains in the first half and made it look possible for them to administer to lehigh its first defeat of the season important and interesting lecture was given in the chem istry lecture room at eleven o'clock on friday the speaker was mr underwood superin tendent of the northampton plant of the bethlehem steel company mr underwood has been connected for many years with the coke manufacturing business in this country and is recognized as one of the fore most authorities on the subject most of mr underwood's acti vities have been identified with the bethlehem steel company which is one of the largest man ufacturers of coke in the coun try he chose as his subject the by-products of coke in order to make his talk as interesting as possible the lec turer gave it in the form of a history of the process of coke manufactory in this connec tion several interesting facts were stated among these was the fact that coke production is not a modern art as the chinese were familiar with a process for making it as well as charcoal the process used by the chinese resembles very closely the mod ern bee-hive oven method the oven was made by scooping out a hole in the ground and pour ing the powdered coal into it ar ranging it so that vertical and transverse flues were obtained the patent for the first bee hive oven was granted in eng land in 1620 and modern coke manufactory dates from that time the bee-hive type of oven derives its name from its shape the first successful process for producing and rendering useful the gas from coal was invented by murdock a german in 1792 he is known as the father of the industry because of the exten sive work he did in perfecting methods for the processes man ufacture of coke for metallurgi cal purposes began in england continued on page 4 col 3 the lehigh frosh team over whelmed the football represen tatives from the baltimore city college on saturday afternoon in their first home game by the score of 28-6 the result does not indicate adequately the su premacy of the brown and white yearlings at least five yards were gained on nearly every play executed by the frosh the baltimore team gained its lone six points by rea son of the poor defense dis played by the first year team in the second quarter that period was the only time that the southerners appeared danger ous the yearling team's of fense was fine on the whole and five forward passes were com pleted by the freshmen the defense of the brown and white first year men was ragged at times but it was capable enough to hold their opponents to one touchdown the defense of the visitors was on the other hand poor throughout the game and they rarely held the frosh on downs although they had a heavy line the great number of penalties incurred most of them against the yearling team marred the game fifty yards were lost to the freshmen thru offside playing alone the pigskin warriors of the class of twenty-eight scored a touchdown only a few minutes after the beginning of the fray the yearlings yanked the ball down the field five to ten yards at a gulp and stopped only when they had downed the ball which was carried by maher be yond the white goal posts the kick after touchdown was made by mulaney the frosh ground ed one pass after receiving the kick-off and completed another for fifteen yards after see sawing back and forth for a while the yearlings rushed the ball to the two-yard line — and the quarter ended the first play in the second quarter was a forward to hand which brought the second touch down to the hefty football men of 28 followed by another point from the kick of mulaney le high kicked off and held balti more for downs baltimore then surprised everyone by holding the frosh for downs on their getting the ball again balti more showed their teeth and bowled the frosh over play af ter play each one netting four or five yards a line buck by walbert finally brought balti more their touchdown baltimore was held for downs and the half ended with the ball in the hands of the frosh both coaches must have spilled some advice because the second half found the defense tighten ed on both sides baltimore failed to gain ground after the kick-off and soon made a present of the ball to the lehigh frosh continued on page 4 col 1 dressed the freshman class friday on the subject of the early history of lehigh as one of the oldest and best loved lehigh graduates the president emeritus was ideally chosen for the topic as he himself has been such a great factor in the development of the university it is very true as dr drinker stated that no man's education is complete unless he is inform d as to the history and tradi tion of his university at the time of dr drinker's college career the whole uni versity was centered in christ mas hall the students never needed to leave the building for dr drinker graduated with the class of 78 he is now pre paring to start out on his an nual grouse hunt and regrets the fact that one may no longer hunt grouse on south mountain as was once a school custom it contained dormitory rooms recitation halls and laborator ies the university was started in 1866 with an enrollment ot forty students and a corps of five professors the rules of conduct for this limited number of students were very strict in as much as no smoking was al lowed liquor was prohibited profanity forbidden and no fire arms to be carried further more there could be no meet ing of students without permis sion of the factulty and students were not allowed to leave their rooms in the evening nor to make any noise while therein curfew rang at nine-thirty and all hard working students must be in bed at that time during the first two years only general courses were offered but the ad dition of the technical course was made the next year dr drinker was the first min ing engineer graduated from continued on page 4 col 4 the brown and white cross country team started the day off right for lehigh on saturday when muhlenberg was defeated by the score of 25 to 30 the race was run over muhlenberg's course and started on the track at ten-thirty in the morning the start and finish of the course were on muhlenberg field the course was about five miles in length and was a typi cal cross-country course extend ing over the rolling country the other side of allentown barba of lehigh was the first runner to cross the finish and he completed the run in the fast time of 27 minutes and 11 sec onds the next three harriers to finish were fairly close togeth er considering the length of the race raine of the brown and white and henry of the car dinal and gray finished two fifths of a second apart for third and fourth places respectively the lehigh man gradually gain ed on his opponent who had a substantial lead at the three mile mark but could not quite overtake him the other run ners finished at comparatively regular intervals after about three false starts the runners finally succeeded in getting under way at the start of the race the muhlenberg hill and dale men took the lead and for over two miles the first three runners were wearers of the cardinal and gray siegmund managed to stay up front for about a mile but was forced to drop back because of stiffness in his leg muscles however after the mid-point of the race was reached the browu and white runners had begun to overtake their rivals and barba finally succeeded in passing ev eryone of them before he enter ed the field for the final lap around the track huegel who was conceded to be muhlenberg's best entry was well up among the leaders until the last mile of the race when he was suddenly overcome and was forced to drop out of the race for a short time even under these conditions he was game enough to start running again and finished eleventh his fail ure to show up as well as ex pected was probably the result of his participating in a country the other side of allentown barba of lehigh was the first runner to cross the finish and he completed the run in the fast time of 27 minutes and 11 sec onds the next three harriers to finish were fairly close togeth er considering the length of the race raine of the brown and white and henry of the car dinal and gray finished two fifths of a second apart for third and fourth places respectively the lehigh man gradually gain ed on his opponent who had a substantial lead at the three mile mark but could not quite overtake him the other run ners finished at comparatively regular intervals after about three false starts the runners finally succeeded in getting under way at the start of the race the muhlenberg hill and dale men took the lead and for over two miles the first three runners were wearers of the cardinal and gray siegmund managed to stay up front for about a mile but was forced to drop back because of stiffness in his leg muscles however after the mid-point of the race was reached the browu and white runners had begun to overtake their rivals and barba finally succeeded in passing ev eryone of them before he enter ed the field for the final lap around the track huegel who was conceded to be muhlenberg's best entry was well up among the leaders until the last mile of the race when he was suddenly overcome and was forced to drop out of the race for a short time even under these conditions he was game enough to start running again and finished eleventh his fail ure to show up as well as ex pected was probably the result of his participating in a parade the previous night if this run ner had finished up front there might have been a different re sult it might also be said that the lehigh runners were under the handicap of having to run two
