those of us who are constantly complaining that the university is not adequately represented by the works of its professors or instruc tors should read the journal of the franklin institute for january which contains an excellent article on " the resistance to corrosion of some light aluminium alloys by dr richards of the metallurgi cal department dr richards is already a recognized authority on the new metal and the publication of this article in a journal of such widespread reputation is a well earned recognition of his numerous and untiring investigations he gives in a condensed form the results of a series of experi ments with pure aluminium and with alloys of it containing be tween two and three per cent of copper german silver nickel and titanium under the action of such ordinary corrosive agents as caustic potash hydrochloric acid nitric acid common salt acetic acid vine gar and water charged with car bonic acid gas from the results of three experiments dr richards shows for what particular uses the pure metal and each one of its al loys is best adapted the conclu sions reached are highly practical and of great value to anyone who desires to put the metal to practical use as the mixture of even very small proportions of other metals with aluminium produces import ant changes in its properties both mechanically and chemically communication to the editors of the brown and whits an attempt will be made this term to fit the large lower room in christmas ball as a clubroom and general gathering place — a place which shall always be open com
