since so many men have signified their intention of making a try for it a meeting of the engineering society will be held this evening in the physical laboratory important business will be considered and a paper on galvanometers will be read by jackson 96 an opportunity has been given the senior civils to make some in vestigations with the new testing machine the southern club a number of southerners gath erd at saucon hall on monday even ing the meeting was called to order by bowie 95 acting chair man a report from the committee on constitution and by-laws was pre sented by massey 95 chairman of the committee the articles after having been read discussed and in some cases slightly changed were adopted one by one a motion was made and carried that those men who had shown themselves enthusiastic ir the for mation of the club numbering about twenty-five be accepted as charter members sample cuts for the epitome were presented and the committee appointed for the work was ad vised to make further investigation concerning the matter another meeting will be called very soon at which permanent officers will be elected communication to the editors of the brown and whitje the article in the bkcwn and white from the business manager of the 9.6 epitome is worthy of the attention of every under gradu ate it is probable that the diffi culty which both the 95 and 96 epitome boards have had in secur ing advertisements will recur in the future as long as the present business depression continues it would without doubt be to the interest of every student who purchases any article however small from an advertiser to men tion that he had seen his advertise ment in the college periodical this may seem a very small matter to most men but if vigorously followed there is little doubt that future boards would have less diffi culty from this source than those of the past c 8 97 assembly dance the third and final dancing class was held at the eagle hotel bethlehem last tuesday evening it being the last event of the kind before the lenten season a large party of merrymakers assembled to take their last innings with the world before retiring to the len ten solitudes the dancing con tinued until 2 o'clock and included three extras and many encores the patronesses were : mrs a b desaulles mrs w b myers mrs c m dodson mrs e c mitchell mrs w a wilbur the committee to whom the college and town are indebted foi this enjoyable series of entertain ments is composed as follows : coleman gibson hiss and john son of the class of 9s h w bald win dickerman and e c thurs ton of 96 when asked they ex pressed themselves as being very much gratified at the social and financial success of the dances gymnasium smoker the smoker which was post poned from saturday took place in the gymnasium tuesday night it was an innovation at lehigh but proved to be a great success almost three hundred were present these being student with but few exceptions each person upon entering was presented with a pipe and sufficient tobacco to last him through the evening seats suffi cient for all were provided on the main floor and on the running track the evening's entertain ment began at a quarter after eight when yorks 98 and moritz 98 appeared upon the floor for a spar ring contest this event was rather amusing as neither of the con testants weighed over ninety pounds three rounds took place and as neither was knocked out in this time it was hard to tell which had the better of it the next event was a wrestling match between eights,'9s and barker,97 barker was thrown in lesss than two minutes and following this kline 96 threw clinton 97 in a short space of time lovering,'9s and lewis 95 then appeared in a sparring match this was quite exciting but no blood was spilt in the wrestling bout between euggles,'9s and e j eights 95 neither succeeded in throwing the other within the required time the same was the result with dv barry,'9s and bernstein,96 the seventh event was a wrestling match between castleman 95 and barber 95 barber was under neath all the time but in this position proved almost as immov able as an elephant and castleman was unable to get the necessary three points down the only fencing match of the evening now occured between murray 95 and c becerra 98 although the former had a great advantage on account of his long reach it would be hard to tell which had the better of it the ninth event was a closely contested wrestling bout between wheeler/95 and dewitt 95 the latter won at almost the end of the time limit next senior 97 wrestled slade 97 senior had the decided advantage nevertheless did not succeed in throwing his opponent without much difficulty the eleventh event was a sparring match be tween tarleton 95 and lovering 95 following this e j eights wrestled with homer 98 ; neither won immediately afterwards 11 t eights 95 threw barker 97 within thirty seconds then dick 95 and becerra 98 sparred three rounds the latter having decidedly the better of it on account of his superior weight and longer reach in the fifteenth event walters,96 at wrestling threw bernstein 96 after considerable difficulty cas tleman and barber then took a second try at wrestling this was similar to the former contest cornell has a new baseball cage nearly fifty men reported as candidates for the harvard base ball team harvard has all her old pitchers and catchers back this season a dual league has been formed between stanford university and the university of california pro viding for annual competition in foot ball base ball tennis and field and track athletics a b priest cornell's well known pitcher during the seasons of 92 and 93 has returned to college and will probably occupy his former position the brown and white lehigh university south bethlehem pa february 28 1895 vol 11 no 40 between these two concluding in the same way the eights brothers then wrestled a bout and saved hard feeling in the family by neither lehigh — is certainly a move in the right direction at the meeting of the intercol legiate lacrosse association held in philadelphia on the 16th inst the scheme was"p roposed thoroughly dis_qu*sect and practically decided tipon the most important factor in such undertakings — finance — was satisfactorily disposed of and as further arrangements are being made there is no danger of the affair becoming a fizzle all lacrosse men will have a double aim this spring — to win the championship and by hard consci entious training and playing to be among the five men chosen to rep resent lehigh on the team ; and let it be added that this trip will be one well worth trying for stevens has very kindly proffered their hospitality and the represen tative teams will meet at hoboken n j for about a week's practice together before starting on the trip
