the contest held on friday after noon at 2 o'clock to determine le high's representative in the state oratorical contest at lancaster was rather sparsely attended the opening oration was given by randall 97 or the new south his voice is of remarkable volume and his power of emphasis strong it was with considerable eloquence that he dwelt on the south not of secession but of union forever lambert 95 spoke on ideals 7 ' with rhythmical language and graceful gestures suited to thought and subject he sketched the rise and growth of ideals in history and in individual experience cherish them and at the last when life is flowing away lo they will have become realities the next three orators were the prize winners in the junior contest of washington's birthday messrs herr ried and daboll if any thing mr herr suffered from the lack of an audience his oration being somewhat of the nature of a direct address mr ried doubtless too did not do as well as he might because of his recent attack of sick ness mr daboll had improved considerably on his form in the junior contest the judges professor robinson dr caskey and mr meaker were long in making their decision but finally announced that mr herr was given the appointment with mr daboll as his alternate the state contest will take place on april 26 the senior class elections will be held in packer hall on thurs day march 7 from 9.30 to 12.30 j l.'poultney pres the lacrosse men are again urged to attend the drills in the gymnasium we have but four or five more to take and all who intend to play this spring are ex pected to be there we must get in good condition so as to get on the field as soon as the snow leaves the ground mondays and fridays at 5 p m dick the annual meeting of the in tercollegiate amateur athletic as sociation of america was held in new york on feb 23 as a result of the recent distur bances by the freshman class at yale it is reported that freshman sports will be prohibited communications to the editors of the brown and white the committee who have charge of collecting athletic subscriptions would like to call the attention of the students to the fact that up to this time a very small percentage of athletic dues has been collected the second term is now almost two months old and the collectors have been hard at work but for all that the men have been very slow in their payments the season of baseball and lacrosse is now ap proaching and to run these teams successfully there must be some money there is no reason why every student in the university should not be able to give some thing to the support of his college teams three dollars is not much to ask from any man but if any feel that they cannot afford to give this let them give as much as they can every little counts and if every one gives something a great deal will be accomplished this is now the first of the month and for that reason a large amount should now be paid up committee on athletic subscriptions to the editors of the bkown and white : now as the baseball season is drawing near i wish to urge the advisability of organizing frater nity teams in other colleges this method has proved to be an excel lent way for developing good ma terial for the varsity i should suggest that a schedule of games be arranged for the teams so that they can play for the championship of the university and that a tro phy be secured to be presented to the winners in this way i am sure that much enjoyment will be had by the men both in the fra ternities and in college and that good material will be developed for next spring's university team f here is a suggestion for the committee on sports — eds athletics a meeting of the executive sub committee of the athletic com mittee was held on saturday in the office of r h wilbur the members present were r li wil bur chairman r p linderman 87 massey 95 and thurston 96 brooks 9s chairman of the audit ing committee was present and presented a report which was accepted ayres 95 reported progress of lacrosse affairs an nouncing his schedule which is at present incomplete and presented for consideration bids from the different firms for supplying the lacrosse team with suits no action will be taken until the next meeting the trainer was not definitely decided upon the place for the training table has been chosen — 20 west fourth street the most important ac tion of the committees was the fixing of a regular time of meeting the attention of all is called to the fact that regular meetings of the executive committee will be held on the first and third saturdays of every month at 2 o'clock p m in mr rollin pi wilbur's office several small bills were ordered paid and minor matters such as engineering society the regular meeting of the en gineering society was held last thursday evening at 7.30 o'clock in the physical laboratory a report was made by the club room com mittee it decided that as the members of the society had sub scribed as individuals it saw no reason why the funds of the society should be appropriated for the pur pose of aiding to fit up the new room in christmas hall the ban quet committee reported that the annual supper would be held on march 22 no further arrange ments had been made but the com mittee would canvass the members in a few days a cut for the epitome was then presented for inspection for use principally in wheatstone bridge work the success achieved by the instruments was due to three things first to the method of winding the coils ; second to the method of magnetizing the needles and third to the torsion head the next meeting of the society will be held on march 14 and should prove interesting as a new method of procedure has been adopted the new croton aque duct will be the down on the train leaving here at 3.50 p m although several departed earlier in order to spend the afternoon in the quaker city and take in some of the matinees all arrived at the hotel in time for a 6 o'clock dinner which must have been thoroughly enjoyed to judge from the attendant uproar the concert began at about the usual hour and was one of the finest of the season the hall was well filled by a stylish and appre ciative audience who encored every number nearly all the undergrad uates resident in philadelphia were present with friends there was also a goodly number of alumni who showed by their hearty applause that the wear and tear of business life had by no means deadened their love for the old college and its organizations the program was substantially the same as given here some weeks ago the solos by messrs pettinos and quigley were particularly well received both appearing at their best ali cazander by the glee and prin cess bonnie by the banjo club were again prime favorites the concert was finished about 10.30 o'clock and most of the men re turned to the hotel and retired the special car returned to south bethlehem at 10.30 p m sunday bringing a crowd very well satisfied with the trip but somewhat pleased that the season was at last over the regular meeting of the junior class will be held in saucon hall on wednesday march 6 at 12.30 p m * president regular
