the annual meeting of the l u christian association was held last saturday night in christmas hall the meeting was opened by president keim when after the reading of the minutes of the sept ember business meeting the chair men of the different committees made their reports showing steady progress in the work of the associa tion the most important business of the evening was the election of officers for the ensuing year the following were elected : president bratton 96 ; vice president how ell 96 ; corresponding secretary chiles 97 ; kecording secretary paddock 98 ; treasurer hall 96 freshman class meet ing the regular meeting of the fresh man class was held in the english room of packer hall monday at 12.30 president wood presiding the minutes of the last meeting were read and approved owing to the absence of the committee on the class motto this matter was laid over for next meeting the committee on canes is expected to report in the near future a chal lege from the manager of the lafay ette freshman baseball team was read the class decided to put a baseball nine in the field this year cleary is captain but it was necess ary to elect a manager lukens was chosen by ballot it was then moved the class furnish free beer to the sophomores at calculus cre mation this was carried the finance committee has fixed the dues for this term at 1.50 the main use of storage batteries is to take care of the maximum load mr brown then showed curves of voltmeter and ammeter readings exhibiting the fluctuations in the electro-motive force and the cur rent,'with and without the use of secondary cells in the former case the difference of potential was nearly constant diagrams were given and the circuits traced for working the batteries in parallel with the dynamo for two dynamos and two sets of storage cells and for the case when the three-wire system is used some valuable hints on charging and discharging the cells were brought out by mr brown and the method of regula ting the e m f by means of counter electro-motive force cells was explained these cells are made up of non-oxidizable lead plates and by switching in or out one or more of them the e m f is kept constant without consuming any current as a rheostat would various protective devices are needed in connection with a storage system for preventing the cells from being over-loaded or charged at an excessive pressure there are also automatic arrangements which will keep the voltage abso lutely constant these were all gone over in detail j c whitmoyer 95 compared the relative merits of alternating and continuous current arc lamps there is a considerable difference between the ways in which each sends out its light with a direct current there is a crater formed in the positive carbon which throws a majority of the rays downward when an alternating current is used there is no crater in either car bon and the rays of light are diffused more uniformly thus with the latter type of lamp more illumination is obtained at a great distance from the lamp but in the immediate neighborhood of it the intensity of the light is not so great as that which would be had from a direct current lamp for street lighting with an alter nating current a small reflector is needed on the lamp after com paring the ways in which the two systems may be connected up and considering a few more advan tages of each system mr whit moyer came to the conclusion that the continuous current lamp is at present the more efficient of the two at the next meeting mr klinck will explain fully the jablochkoff candle and blehl 95 will present a paper on alternating currents before adjourning the societypassed a resolution asking d s williams 96 to furnish it with a cut for the epitome the harvard out-door record for the 220-yards dash was broken on thursday by t h bigelow 98 in 34f seconds preparations are being made at the harvard observatory for obser vations on the moon during the total eclipse wnich occurs on march 10 col samuel e winslow has ac cepted the position of head coach of harvard's baseball nine there are seventy-five candidates for the cornell nine electrical engineer ing society the regular fortnightly meeting of the electrical engineering so ciety was held tuesday evening in the physical laboratory there being no unfinished or new business before the society the members proceeded to listen to the papers of the evening " the regulation of storage bat teries in electric lighting formed the subject of a well-prepared paper by e c brown 95 although the storage battery has not yet proven a success for traction all experienced electricians have come to the conclusion that it should be used in all electric light stations using the direct current system no meeting of chemistry in the chemical laboratory under the auspices of the chemical society on saturday march 9 at 8 p m the lecture will be the same as given last month before the frank lin institute and will be illustrated by stereoptican views everybody is invited and a large audience is desired there will be a meeting of the epitome board this evening all members are urgently requested to be present w s ayaes editor-in-chief there will be an important meet ing of the christmas hall commit tee in christmas hall today at 5 o'clock chairman senior class meeting the regular monthly meeting of the senior class was held tues day m packer hall the secretary being absent no minutes were read the only business before the class was the discussion of the class book and the election of the class photo grapher vansant for the class book committee reported having received one bid from eggert and submitted a specimen of photo gravure work showing the charac ter of the proposed plates for the book this bid was for furnishing 125 copies consisting of 40 plates each bxlo inches and one dozen cabinet photographs the cost ex clusive of printed matter and bind ing to be 9.75 it was moved that the vote of the recent meeting adopting a class book be reconsid ered and that the thanks of the class be given to the committee for their exertions this was passed and then on motion of yansant it was decided that the class shall not publish a book,as after investigation the committee believed that a de sirable one could not be obtained at a reasonable price bids for the individual photo graphs were submitted by eggert flickinger and klinedinst eggert was elected class photographer and will furnish cabinet photographs to the seniors at the following prices : 1 dozen 3.50 ; 2 dozen 6.50 3 dozen 9.00 4 dozen 11.00 5 dozen 10.50 and in greater numbers at the rate of 2.00 per dozen the class also decided to have the customary large photographs taken and in addition groups of each of the sections the burr it is unfortunate in more ways than one that mr herr decided to withhold the publication of his oration on socialism the edi tors of the burr doubtless reserved a space for this article and when disappointed at the last moment were compelled to resort to pad ding and to subjects of a nature which are best suppressed by padding is meant the unusual quantity of college notes and clip pings while under the latter head would fall the editorial on the smoker for the credit of the uni versity the brown and white took pains to suppress the facts which have lately come to light regarding that affair and at the wish of members of the committee in charge allowed the matter to die a naturrl death ; it is to be regretted that it became necessary for the burr to resurrect the corpse from a literary point of view however the article is dignified and well written the editorial on industry and college affairs are thoughtful and well worked out ; and the fact that the same ideas have occurred to every earnest collegian do not detract from their effectiveness few will read the short story entitled a surmounted obstacle without a sensation of relief the lehigh literary public has been treated to imitations of tales from town topics and seaside li brary stories to such an extent that this charming little love story will come as a pleasing novelty the author's chief aim has been reality the pictures are drawn with considerable freshness and truth and are allowed to create their own impressions on the reader without any prejudicial com ment — a rare virtue the fact is also worthy of notice that the story does rot contain any satire skepticism or blaseness which the young college author so delights to affect the triteness of the verse column is relieved by a plea the writer of this is to be con gratulated upon the skillful ex pression of a conception the burr will probably appear on saturday christian association
