track athletics after some uncertainty in regard to track athletics it is now assured that the team will be given good support if the men will come out and train faithfully the manage ment of sports is now in charge of a sub-committee of the athletic committee and the track team will be under the direction of mr smith who will also manage the team during the spring there will be three field days to which the men who train faithfully may look forward the spring sports will be held about may 8 and the best men will be entered in the in tercollegiate contests at berkley oval lafayette will have a new quarter-mile track this year and has invited lehigh to compete with them in the spring games on june 10 they are sure to have a good team this year and lehigh will have to work hard to beat them as she has during the last few years the team will be much crippled by the loss of russell and olmstead our best men of last year but there are several other men in college who should develop with faithful training let every man begin work in the gymnasium now and be ready to begin outdoor work as soon as the track is in good condition f i wheelee the agora the meeting of the agora on monday evening began promptly at 7 o'clock after a few corrections the minutes of the previous meet ing were approved the results of the conference between our com mittee on debate and that of lafay ette were reported lafayette is to have the choice of the subject and lehigh the choice of sides the contest to occur at easton on may 24 • the following motions were passed by the society : 1 that in the debate no speaker in his second address shall be allowed to advance new arguments ; 2 that upon the rejection of any question proposed by one college reasons for such re jection shall be given 3 that in future debates the minimum length of time between the proposal of the question and the debate shall be four montjis the committee was requested to inform lafayette that with the above conditions the report was favorably received by lehigh a cut for the epitome was pre sented by the chairman of that committee but the society gave the committee full power to act all men proposed for member ship at the last meeting were elected and the names of murray and mckee 95 hall enscoe kline and davidson 96 randall 97 knox and c h becerra 98 were nominated as candidates for admission the subject for discussion was resolved that speculation in business is essentially gambling and immoral best 95 hess 96 and palmer 96 debated on the affirm ative side cressman 95 hess 95 and bernstein 96 were the negative speakers the judges arbenz 95 farman 95 and reid 96 decided unanimously in favor of the affirmative on the merits of the debate general debate was the scene of a lively discussion on the merits of the question the society also decided affirmatively in accordance with the plan for selecting debaters the society chose best hess 96 and cressman as the three having the highest stand ard of excellence the critic's remarks were then heard herr 96 and thurston 96 were appointed as leaders for the debate on march 25 : " re solved that the right of suffrage should be granted to women after march 25 the society will meet each week this will give a chance to ail who desire to contest the debate for april 1 is " re solved that the present financial panic is largely due to the demo cratic administration budd 95 and arbenzi 95 will be the leaders ♦ a new society called " the omar khayijam has been organized at cornell for the purpose of studying the works of that persian astron omer sophomore cotillon club the sophomore cotillon club held a meeting last tuesday even ing at the sigma phi house there was a very good attendance and the coming dance was thoroughly discussed the meeting then ad journed to meet again at the call of the president choir rehearsal will be held to day thursday instead of friday me wolle the regular winter meet of the lehigh university will be held in the gymnasium saturday march 16 at 2.30 p.m admission 35 and 25 cents committee on spoets on monday at 7 p m in room 3 of the physical laboratory the regular meeting of the mathemati cal club will be held herr 96 will present a paper on the theory of the polar planimeter this is a subject of interest to all engin eers and scientists as they are com pelled to use the innstrument al most constantly the explanation involves nothing difficult and will be readily understood by any one familiar with the elements of integ ral calculus tripp 96 will present a paper on hyperbolic functions as this will form the basis for a large part of the subsequent work we extend a special invitation to all interested pbesident at the meeting of the engineer ing society to-night the subject for discussion will be the " croton aqueduct this is an example of modern engineering and is the finest piece of construction in this country in order to become more familiar with its details the society will discuss it special features have ing been assigned to individual men let everyone members or not who have been connected with tunnel or aqueduct work and water supply come and help all to get a clear idea of this subject for future use it will be considered from the civil mechanical and miner's standpoint peesident the university of pennsylvania is arranging for a monster intercol legiate athletic meeting to be held in philadelphia april 20 besides the regular field events there are to be seven one-mile relay races the following pairs have been made out pennsylvania vs har vard yale vs princeton lehigh vs lafayette swarthmore vs george town cornell vs columbia ford ham vs union and university of new york vs the college of the city of new york the relay races will be a great drawing baltimore and expect soon to be able to an nounce a fuller schedule than that given above notices ! an important meeting of the epitome board will be held this thursday evening at 7 p m at phi gamma delta house chess club in christmas hall on saturday evening next mr otto hesse of bethlehem will give an exhibition of simultaneous chess he will play as many opponents as there shall appear and what is more all at the same time it is to be under stood that all chess players in coll lege are invited to participate in this match and all others interested in chess will be welcomed to wit ness the exhibition after the simultaneous play it may be possi ble to arrange a couple of blind folded games the more partici pants the better showing we can make ; so let everybody turn out let all who can
